Clio 172 track car

  Clio 172
Morning all

Been away for a while, I had a Ibiza Cupra 1.8T then swapped it for a Astra H VXR running 427bhp.
Had a half cage and standalone ecu with Garrett Turbo.

Decided I wanted to time attack with it, and went balls deep into the build however went too far and costing too much. So I sold everything off, and have gone back to getting a Clio 172.

Its a 2004 reg in flame Red which has alreadyhad a full cage fitted along with other stuff. Here's some pictures from the add.
I will be going to pick it up next weekend from Livingston to bring it back to Norfolk.

Yesterday was a "interesting" day to say the least.
I went up to East Calder, Edinburgh to pick the car up finally.
Got car, and started driving home down towards the M74.
App. 15mins into the drive, the stop and battery symbol intermittently come on and then in stayed on.
It then stayed on, along with the ABS and traction control light coming on.
Then the speedo died, transmission light started flashing and began to missfire. Suspect it was the alternator at this point.

So stopped at a Traffic Scotland SOS phone, which didn't work. So phone the breakdown to get recovered.
Took over an hour to be picked up by the recovery lorry who took my to the depot in Lockerbie to be looked at and decide what to do.
They checked it over, and confirmed the alternator was knackered.
Took a while for decision to be made on way forward, and eventually it was decided to get me a taxi from Lockerbie to Newcastle Airport to pick up a hire car and drive home. I then didn't get home till 00.30 in the morning.
My car will then be dropped off at mine in the week so I can organise a repair.

Plan is to to get the alternator replaced at same time as cambelt, dephaser, water pump and auxiliary belt.

Not the best start the ownership then! Hope you get it all sorted soon enough!

Yes mate, soul destroying as so far away from home and just spent all that money on a supposedly full working car.

Having a look for a new alternator, and I think mine is 110amp as its not a cup which means it the more expensive one e.g. RPD is £211 for the 110amp vs £149 for the 75amp

  Clio 172
So ordered the above alternator which should be here in 2 working days.
Also ordered an additional 1 litre of valvoline 5w-50 as free shipping so works out cheaper than Opie Oils.
Gotta speak to recovery company today to see where to drop it off.

  Clio 172
So the clio got delivered this about midday today all the way from Lockerbie by the recovery company.

Needed a push to get it off the vehicle and onto to the yard
IMG_20200303_120348.jpg

However, because the battery was proper dead I had to get it jump started of the daily to be able to move it.
IMG_20200303_130344.jpg

Once started, battery just had enough juice to get it reversed into the garage so it'll stay there until can get the alternator fitted along with all the other bits.

Glad you got it home finally!

@JKING3008 you the guy with big arms I met at Snet once? Fairly sure its you, you had the Orange/Black/Grey high spec clio which you sold when you moved out from home or moved house or something? If so that shells been on eBay for ages, can't find it now though so perhaps they finally delisted it/sold it.

Anyway.. ill be down Snet a few times this year all being well so perhaps can share a garage or something depending who you normally go down there with etc.

Okay sweet, hopefully I can see you there😎

So got 2 jobs out of many done today, which was the spark plug change and PMS Stud Conversion.
Didn't realise it had spacers on the front when bought it so studs are just abiut long enough.
Excuse the dirty car, been in garage since its been back and haven't had a chance to wash as been offshore lol.

What I did notice was that there was a smell of petrol in the oil when I checked the dipstick.

Could this have been caused by the alternator issue whereby they wasn't enough power for the spark plugs to ignite the fuel? Or should I be worried that the piston rings are on there way out?

Ive got new oil and filter to go in, so should I wait to get it diagnosed first?

  Clio 172
So car went to garage today to change the alternator and have a quick check of the petrol smelling oil
IMG_20200318_082210.jpg

Required pushing out of garage as battery proper dead🤪

Got car to garage and replaced the alternator with a brand new Renault/ Valeo one
IMG_20200318_150850.jpg

Put the battery on charge whilst changing the alternator and once changed, it started absolutely fine😁

I then replaced the oil for Valvoline VR 1 5W-50 and replaced oil filter.

Stuck the code reader on and no faults shown for faulty lambda sensors and oil didn't smell too bad either which is a good sign👌

I made the mistake of getting a set of cheap injectors for mine when trying to sort an issue, they were worse than the fecked OE injector! Were throwing bucket loads of fuel in and leaking form brand new! Total trash rubbish.

Bought a set of OE ones (which weren’t that dear in the grand scheme) and was lovely after, ran so much smoother than it’d ever been.

  Clio 172
Emailed Nick at @pure-motorsport today and ordered the following:
- Damped Crank Pulley
- 68MM ALTERNATOR PULLEY AND SPACER
- LIGHTWEIGHT WATER PUMP PULLEY
- LIGHTWEIGHT PAS PUMP PULLEY
BELT 4PK 1295

So basically the lightweight pulley kit but with standard damped crank pulley.
These should be delivered Wednesday as missed today's collection 😅

Im running -1.0 rear shims, took abit of a punt at what to try first, that puts both sides at -2.5 as somehow both of my rears were at -1.5 as they should be from the factory where as all of my previous cars have been all over the place.

Nice, I think I'm gonna aim for -2' camber and 5mins toe-in either side for the rear.
Should be at - 2.5' camber on front but unsure on toe settings so I'll get that set to slightly toe-out.
