Clio Cup Racer No28 Rally Car

  Audi rs3/Clio 172cup
Tailgate fitted, just need to rivet the latches on.
The width of the rear now with the wider stubs and spacers, the rear arches are 15mm wider than on the blue car and you can see in the picture that the rear bumper doesn’t sit perfect with them.

That was all for today as I’m waiting on parts to finish off the rear brakes, I do have the extinguisher to fit but holding off as long as I can because it isn’t the nicest of jobs.

Took the Ohlins off the front of the old car today as they’re leaking again after a major service, so they’re going back this week to be sorted.

Been so busy with work I haven’t done to much but it’s getting there along with the blue car too. That one is ready for its new engine and gearbox.
On to the red one, I noticed the rear toe and camber was all over the place, with one side noticeably wider than the other.
I found play in the rear beam so ordered the new upgraded bearings from pms with new spacers and I have the same problem....
The housing is to wide from housing to circlip so the bearing has around 1mm of movement. I need to get a shim machined then fit in the housing before the bearing goes in. Pain in the arse but movement like that in the rear beam will give some strange handling that’s for sure.

This is before the new parts.

Laguna hubs arrived ready to be rebuilt, all correct hubs, 1 was off a 1.8 in Spain and the other off a 2.0 in Germany.

Had mine rebuilt after my roll on Epynt , cost me a few pennies !
I was the first ones to have them done , and had to send them my race car suspension so they knew lengths and the ends to fit it on the car , had a bargain back then as the car set brand new cost me £2750 !
Great suspension though

Yeah I’ve seen your thread about when you bought them. Rears now are £2000 on there own. What top mounts do you use because I’ve got an issue with the cup racer ones. They hit the banjo bolt when rotated

I run the race top mounts as well , I think iv'e clipped the pipe to the inner wing so it doesn't move , just the strut , will have the car back in my workshop in the next week or two so will have a look what I did , it's been a while

It would be interesting to see if you've got some kind of spacer below the mount as that’s what mine needs to work other wise the top mount will always touch the banjo bolt. It had flatted the top on the bolt on mine it had been getting knocked that much

Top mounts come this week to get around the issue of the cup racer mounts hitting the banjo bolt. I wasn’t happy with running mounts just held in with a circlip.
I’ve had a couple of issues with the bearing in the new mounts as in my opinion they’re not fit for purpose. £3 bearing with loads of play is not good for me.
Ive managed to make them work with an m18 bearing to fit directly on the strut with no inserts or spacers

I cant see the video but it doesnt surprise me tbh. They have to be cheap bearings for the price they're being sold for.
When you think the ktec topmounts have genuine skf bearings that are about 70quid alone, the saving has to be somewhere!

I wouldnt trust the brembo brackets they make too as the thread depths arent long enough.

Yeah the bearing is a £3 Dunlop by the looks of the part number on it. The spacers they send for the standard cars aren’t ideal either. They could do with making the spacer sit though the whole bearing and meet in the middle like the ktec mount.

Yeah the bearings in the cup racer mounts price up on Optimiz access at around €83 each.

Time to start bolting bits back on.

Sadev back from @NorthloopCup after a check over and rebuild 👍🏻
Engine almost ready to go in, just waiting on a flywheel as I ordered the wrong one thinking it was 60-2 trigger pattern but it’s not.
I also managed to machine the top mounts to fit a m18 bearing, so no spacers on the shaft itself now. The mount needed 0.5mm out the bottom to fit a slightly different size bearing.

Bit of a set back today.
The plan was to get the engine and box mounted on the subframe and into the car.

I gave the helix clutch that come with this car to my brother because I had a relatively new sach pms clutch.
That helix clutch is in his car now, all up and running.

So I fitted the sach clutch and sadev to the new engine today and the sach pressure plate hits the inside of the bell housing and locks the crack up. I did try and buzz some material off it was catching on but it needed quite a lot removing to get it to fit. With these casings being rare I didn’t fancy taking any more material out.

Nightmare.
So I called around all day trying to find someone with a helix clutch in stock, which no one did. I found they even have a part number for a cup racer but helix couldn’t really give me much info on that one. I do have the build manual which gave an OE part number for the pressure plate 🤷🏼‍♂️

In the end I didn’t want to take a £500 gamble on a clutch that still might not work so me and my brother did a clutch change in his car this evening. 4 hours from start to finish isn’t bad when we weren’t going hell for leather at it.
Lucky bugger now has a nice pms clutch for free , I just need to get this helix replated this week.

I had to do that with the Sachs clutch I bought from PMS , nick did tell me the cover needed some material taken off , didn't need a lot taken off , it was by the straps that needed doing , took a couple of goes taking material off , putting the gearbox on and off to get it to clear , but I didn't go mad each time grinding it down , fitted fine then
I didn't have to take any material off the gearbox

I did think about cutting the cover plate but wasn’t sure on how it would effect the plate. This helix one isn’t as good but it will do the job.

I didn't have to cut it , just trimmed the edge in 3 places with a sanding disc on a grinder , was very simple to do and took minutes , wish i'd taken a pic now

Yeah I could see what needed taking off. As I had a OE clutch cover to compare it against. Mine looked like it needed more than the edge taking off

Engine is in 😍

Took the clutch plate to Questmead on Wednesday, got it back Friday after re paddling it. Great service meant I could crack on with getting the motor in.

I drilled the cup racer brace as I might use it by bolting it on to the top mount instead of the top plate. Now it’s drilled I can get it painted up.

Looking great! Did you sort your topmount issue in the end.

Thanks 👍🏻 Yeah what I did was ordered a proper m18 bearing instead of m20 to do away with the shitty sleeve spacers as the shaft is 18mm. Then got the inside of the mount milled down by 0.5mm as the new bearing was 16.5 deep instead of 16mm. Circlip now holds the bearing perfect.

Wicked. Atleast this way you know exactly which bearing is needed when they wear out. For reference the Ktec mounts use a SKF GEH20C 20x42x25x16mm bearing so you can compare to what you've put in.

Yeah that’s the size of what was in it, all be it a cheap bearing, but with the shaft being 18mm it made sense to change to it run without an insert. I’ve used a magill Motorsport bearing but the original cup racer mounts i have I run the same size bearing but made by uniball at around €70. If these don’t stand up I’ll try them
