Looking forward to getting a ride out in this when its all done mate, new engine should look awesome when fitted, are you going to be painting the block?

If you are going to get the cam cover powder coated, mount it on some board first and plug the holes so no blast material gets inside it, and cut down an oil cap to plug the hole with.

This is from my williams engine, but same idea:

Can be a right nightmare cleaning them out otherwise.

That looks incredible Chip!, unfortunately I will be painting the cover in-situ as the engine will be in later.

Its back, working and booking in with Mike again for remapping at the end of the month!! Feels incredible already!

Be careful not to drive it too hard at the moment mate, you have to bear in mind that Mike mapped it while the engine had a major problem so the map will potentially be a long out as a result of the fact that its been custom mapped to suit what we now know was a knackered engine, so with a healthy engine there is a big risk of it running lean or having detonation.

Cheers for the advice Chip! I have been very very careful with it and I am trying to get booked in for wednesday the 2nd to have the mapping done. Also the map will be completely different because I had that advanced timing on it! but it runs spot on it really does, I cant wait to see what potential it has with a propper map!

Have you had any experience with this Chip? it looks pretty good in all honesty! Im very tempted to get a few cans and do the cam cover and cage in it!

Are you getting the timing advanced again, or are you going to just get it mapped on the standard marks this time?

No mate, Im not really into painting stuff TBH I normally just get things powder coated cause im lazy, it was my Mrs that did ours in paint so I'll ask her but I dont think she has used that particular one either.

I personally would be skeptical that an anodised style finish would look right in paint, so only advice I can offer is buy a can and try it on something that doesnt matter.

I think ill have to have it timed on the standard marks chip, I just afford to keep throwing money at it now!

id like to powdercoat it but its just been resealed :(

Highly unlikely mate, although might be around in the evening if you're still about (not sure if you are staying around for the day or just dropping it off and picking it up)

Are you doing the renaultsport day on the 4th May at bedford?

  RS2'd Trophy
I can't get down for the 4th chip, work are busting my balls! Will be doing cs Saturday if that's cool with you? I'll be waiting with the car aswell when im down with Nike because it's a 250mile round trip!

Here are a few pics, please excuse the dyno rod red cam cover. Just want to thank mick@diamond motors and rob91 for all your help. The engine feels brilliant! I cant however thrash it because of the map so looking forward to the beginning of next month!

And the engine in!

I am going to do the cam cover anodized red and all the ancillary parts high gloss black this time! Off to pick up a pipe to relocate the air filter in the front bumper aswell so no more front fogs either.

Thanks for looking.

Awesome to see its all sorted and quickly too.

Been looking at the Anodized effect paint myself, not used it but have used other paints in VHT's range and they're awesome.

Looks great mate, will definately see you at CS Saturday, perhaps we can try and park a few RS2's cars like yours and ours together? :)

:) Great to see things moving in the right direction, James! In hindsight I wish I'd simply bought a new engine when my problems started; would have been cheaper!

OK so the new engine is in and its mapped!! 187.9bhp with a restrictive sports cat and with a stupid air filter setup in the bumper, so according to the boys its be as near as dammit 190bhp with that sorted.

When ive fitted my new airbox ill go back for another power run!

The throttle response is incredible and the linear power has transformed how the car drives! All in all, highly recommended!

Thanks again Mike and James!

Excellent result so far :)

We've got 2 172's at the moment, one with an RS2 and one without, I must confess I absolutely hate the standard power delivery now on the non rs2 car now that I have got so used to the way the RS2 delivers the torque so much more linearly, the standard one just feels so peaky by comparison.
I like driving peaky cars when the peak is near the limiter but its just such a horrid feeling when the torque builds at about 5.5 and then just dies off as you keep revving it, just totally loses the willingness to rev that the RS2 car has.

My mrs got some instruction at bedford recently on the renaultsport day in the RS2 car and the instructor commented to her that it was the first 172 he had been in that actually felt like it wanted to rev properly on track!
