Clutch Replacement MK1 1.8 16V

  GTti, Clio 1.8 16v
Just thought I'd post a thread up. There are some bargains to be had out there in the current climate.

I bought a 16v Clio for £200 a few weeks back, central locking doesn't work and the clutch/cable was in a bad state. After having a little look and play with the clutch cable I decided it was the clutch itself.

Took it to Mr Clutch (Milton Keynes) for a replacement, they replaced my clutch cable as well the clutch and had a look at a sticky throttle cable. I spend enough time preparing my race GTti to want to work on the Clio!

Cost £239 all in, would have been £189 if it wasn't for the cable. From reading various threads on this forum I'd expected the price to be far greater.

So a run around (Am buying a place to live) with 9 months MOT for £439 isn't a bad result!

I don't know if it's a genuine one, but it cost £49. I had read that aftermarket cables can lead to issues, the existing one on the car was a Renault one, seemed fairly robust. I guess its more to do with luck as to how long anything lasts! :p

I never trust garages so I can't be sure it even needed a cable replacement, they suggested there was a 'clip' missing in part of the setup. I never spotted anything like that myself.

I will have a look to see if it looks the same.

Genuine cables are just under £20 from Renault, sounds like you have been overcharged in that area. What colour is the cable? If it's not black its not genuine, if its black it might be genuine.

Don't know, I drove the the car home last night, clutch has a very small biting point but the pedal isn't too hard. Drives fine!

£239 was all in inc parts and labour, they fixed my throttle cable too, I felt some plastic part that goes through the bulkhead was loose.

Think I have a bit of a dodgy idle control valve, may need some cleaning, dips below and stalls sometimes when coming to standstill.

Re-earth the speedo cable behind the clocks, there's 3 wires that come off the speedo cable, earth the black one, this can cure most idle problems
