Continental Sport Contact 2

  Clio 172
Hey,

Just wondered your opinions on these tyres bought two new front tyres for the clio and spent £210 for them inc. fitting. The sizes of the tyres are 205/50 16, when I said to the bloke the garage the size of the tyres on the clio, he was like what. Are they really big tyres and shouldn't be on the clio? Your opinions please.

Cheers,

Sami

They were a present.:)

Yeh that's what i thought they were abit on the large side for the car but they seem to be ok, they scrub a bit on reverse but other than that they are good. What are they like on handling, with the grip on the road?

Surely the wrong profile is going to affect allsorts - speedo reading, oddometer reading, acceleration (worse I think), although you may get better fuel economy. Probably only slight differences, but personally I'd want them to be the correct size.

Yeah, I think 195/50 16 and 205/45 16 give the same diameter/circumference - so no probs. But not 205/50 16.

195/45 gives 87.75mm tyre profile
195/50 - 97.5
205/45 - 92.25
205/50 - 102.5

So for a 172 going from 195/45 to 205/50 would give you a radius increase of 14.75mm.

That works out about 5% so your speedo would under read by that amount.

I was being sarcastic, but any ways lol

Surely the 45 and 50 walls in both 195/205 would give the same radius, the fact only the tyre width has changed?

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but how has only the width changed? 45% of 195 and 205 is not the same.

I think he meant a 195/45 compared to a 205/45 and a 195/50 compared to a 205/50???? I hope that's the case anyway. I think it was just badly worded.

But back to the point in hand, the conti sports are great tyres. But I wouldn't go up a size like, it's not uncommon for changing tyre sizes to confuse the f**k out of your ecu.

the profile is relative to the width, not a fixed rate, think this is were he is getting confused.

So a 195/50 has a much smaller sidewall then a 300/50

I knew 195/50 and 205/45 weren't an exact match, but I had it in my head that they were closer than that. I was being lazy - couldn't be bothered to do the maths.

Even so, of the two sizes used by Renault themselves 195/50 gives the larger diameter and 205/50 is 10mm more than that. So I still wouldn't use them.

And yes before anyone tells me I know this is only a simplistic way of looking at it - the dimensions vary according to speed, load, temperature, amount of wear (which alone can probably cause a difference of about 10mm in diameter between a brand new tyre and a knackered one), etc.

Not being an expert I'll just stick to manufacturers recommendations. :)

Yeah that's what I was meaning, how would a 195/50/16 have a smaller radius then a 205/50/16. I thought only thing that would be different is the width on the tyre and the side wall would still be the same.

the 50 is a percentage so 50% of 195 is smaller than 50% of 205 thats my understanding anyway.

The sidewall can't be the same. The 50 is the height, as a percentage of the width. So 50% of 195 is 97.5 and 50% of 205 is 102.5. Different height = different radius.
