This pinged up on my FB feed the other day. Reminded me of this thread. A shame for the guy, but I did chuckle at a few things. The stickers in particular. Anyway…

When I first got this car I was determined to keep it pretty subtle looking and sounding, and enjoyed the banter about the sort of pillock that usually drives a Fiesta ST.

Then I got a loud exhaust and a stupid intake kit.

And now I find myself on the driveway installing 'carbon' mirror covers. Even as I was fitting them I could feel my IQ ticking down like the Countdown clock.

Confirmed dribbler.

This is std formula for nice modifiable cars that sold well. As opposite to nice cars that were rare.

Get Modded, Get Tracked or Crashed, Numbers Drop. Values Climb. Get stored & driven on nice days by old dudes.

Clio 182 Lifecycle. ST just needs another 10 years.

Yep. A mere hop, skip and a jump and before you know it, you’ll be sporting gel overlays, rally flaps and bonnet vents.

WTF? Have you seen what I drive? It contains more adhesive than the UHU factory, I have every single panel with something stuck on it.

Not wing Mirrors though. I’m not that guy.

Just buy an ST-1 so it doesn't have keyless.

It would be fascinating to see figures for how many have been stolen. I bet it's a tiny percentage in reality.
They had a go at my brothers. Got about 10m before the second immobiliser I fitted kicked in.

It's been a few quiet months, so time for some more upgrades. You'll be pleased to read that everything this time around is about performance rather than cosmetic, given the abuse I (quite rightly) received last time.

When I started modding the car I convinced myself that I was going to stop at stage 2(ish), i.e. keeping with the OE turbo, so when I went for the Collins CP2-E package, I opted for the Airtec Stage 1 intercooler. Predictably I've now decided I do want to go the S270 turbo route, which means upgrading to a full height intercooler, thus wasting money on extra labour and losing money on the Airtec (available for sale if anyone's interested...).

No noticeable difference in performance yet, but I'm still on the OE turbo and CP2-E mapping which wasn't limited by the Airtec anyway. Main thing is that it's another job out of the way ready for the CP4 / S270 turbo upgrade, probably in October.

Also took the opportunity to fit a GFB-DV+ which allegedly helps with boost leaks in the crappy OE valve, which in theory helps it hold boost better. Can't say I've noticed the difference yet (limited driving though), but one big change is that the DV sound on light throttle from the open cone Revo intake is now a fair bit quieter which makes me feel much less of a tit pottering about the village.

That said, I'm pleased to note that our sleepy little village now has a Spirit Blue ST180 kicking about that sounds like it has a de-cat, and a Max-Barry base spec Fiesta that is both biblically loud, and also sounds like s**t, so by comparison my car is still pretty restrained.

To finish it all off I've just had a secondary immobiliser fitted which was a requirement for insurance but also gives a bit of peace of mind given how easy these things are to steal.

What sort of power are you hoping for once its done Rich?

300-320

They advertise the package as 310-320 but I've got slightly different supporting mods (Revo vs. ITG open induction, Wagner vs. Airtec intercooler, Milltek vs. Mongoose exhaust). Personally I think my mods are at least as good as their recommendations but every car / combo is a little different I guess.

i don't think you will be disappointed, i have driven a mountune 280 fiesta i think it was, it went well, really well.

If anything my concern is having too much and it becoming just too much effort to get it down well.

The dyno plots I've seen for the CP4 seem to be pretty decent though. Torque is around 290lbft so not too high for FWD.
i assume the Mountune kit comes with a diff? or do the has an LSD as standard? the one i drove gripped pretty well, although i didn't drive it for a long.

No to both.

An LSD might appear on the shopping list at some point, but I'm interested to see how driveable it is at this power with an open diff.

I'm not tracking it and they are apparently quite torque-steery with an LSD (no fancy RevoKnuclkle or PerfoHub on the Fiesta) so it might actually be worth my while trading some corner exit speed for a more predictable power delivery on the straights.

Interestingly when I talked to Collins about it a few months back, they actually recommended against the diff for road use.

I've owned an M285 from mountune and it doesn't light up the front wheels as the power comes in a lot later and they purposefully map them very linear so it doesn't dump a load of boost when you set off, collins performance are very similar. My mate is on X47R with a collins map and that again is very linear power wise, but drives very well still.

So, after the issues with insurance earlier in the year, and a few rescheduled bookings, I finally made it up to Collins yesterday to upgrade from their CP2-E tune to the CP4 (basically their hybrid turbo package). Gratuitous snail pic:

PXL_20231108_085345941.PORTRAIT.jpg

While it was up on the ramp I also took the opportunity to have some lowering springs fitted along with refreshed rear beam bushes. That brings the spec up to:
- Milltek turbo-back (sports cat)
- ITG Induction kit
- Wagner intercooler
- TT S270 hybrid turbo
- Eibach springs
- CP4 map

On Gary's advice they swapped my Revo induction for the ITG as their CP4 map doesn't seem to play nicely with other kits. Given the distances involved I couldn't really be arsed to chance it, only to have to get it swapped out at a later date.

Everything went on without a hitch, and when data-logging it was showing 225g/s of airflow which by their reckoning puts it at 317bhp @ 7250rpm, which is pretty much the top-end of what they see on the S270s and is actually within a few bhp of a low end S280 setup. Pretty pleased with that, especially as there were some initial doubts as to how well the Wagner IC would perform. Car has a great power curve now:

Power Graphs.jpg

(not my actual dyno run, just lifted some other dyno graphs from their website and mashed them together in Excel for a rough comparison)

By my reckoning that gives the car a power to weight ratio around 290bhp/ton which (famous last words) seems plenty. The drive back was mostly just cruising along with traffic, but on the few opportunities I got to stretch its legs, it felt massively more powerful and so much stronger right at the top of the rev range. If the road is even a little wet it's spinning up at the top of 2nd and 3rd though, so it definitely needs a softer right foot than I've been using to date. Inexplicably it even apparently managed 50mpg over the 180 miles I drove coming home.

Being honest, I think the old CP2-E setup was probably the sweet spot for all around usability, but I really did fancy having something just a bit too powerful and this seems to tick that box.

Do they not have a rolling road to actually tell how much power it makes?

Excellent figures from what they’ve said though

I think they have access to one for development, but they don't routinely dyno customer cars when they're just applying the standard CP2 / CP4 / CP5 maps.

Once they'd mapped it they took it out to data-log it, mainly to check IATs, lambdas etc. to ensure it's safe I guess, but they reckon that the airflow figures are a close enough proxy to actual power when compared to the same basic map / setup on a car that they have dynoed.

They are nice figures, as above, bit of warm weather and some sticky rubber you will be pissing on plenty of peoples chips in that, great work mate.

I know that 'i had a [insert supercar] off the lights' stories put me fully in pleb territory, but I already have fake carbon wing mirrors and a noisy dump valve, so wtf do I care....

Anyway, when I was nearly back home last night I ended up behind an M3 Touring. After a while the road cleared in front of us, we both accelerated hard and he didn't manage to pull away from me. (I know, usual caveats, not really trying, didn't know I was there, was cruising in 9th gear / comfort etc.). I've no doubt he'd have destroyed me off the line, or with a few manual gear changes slowing me down, but in-gear and not limited by traction I seemed to have the measure of him. (makes sense I guess, 290bhp/ton vs. 280bhp/ton).

I felt sorry for him though, as at the next roundabout we did the same thing. I smashed it up to 60mph and backed off, while he just kept piling on the speed..... the entire way through the average speed check zone. Clearly not a local.
