Cup MOT Failure

  Evo 8 MR
My friend has just had his 172 Cup fail it's MOT test. What's interesting is what they've put on the list, seems like the usual b****cks that a lot of places try it on with.

Here's what they've put:

Track rod end ball joints excessive play
Suspension excessive play
Brake binding
Coil spring fractured
Brake load sensing valve defective
Brake recording little effort
Front tyre illegal
Front brakes inbalanced
Emissions high

Here's the creme de la creme, they've quoted him £750 to make it passable...seven hundred and fifty quid! Where the hell did they get that figure from?....thin air!?

Now we are aware of the fractured spring and the binding brake so they are genuine but I know for certain there's plenty of tread on all four tyres and the exhaust is fine, however the brake faults look to be the fault thrown up in error due to it being a cup but I thought this was sorted by an update from the VOSA years ago?

They have seriously got to be trying it on, obviously I've told him to bring the car back home and get it done at a local place where I know the lads, only reason he's not done that is due to being based down south and the expiry date coming quicker than he anticipated etc. What a waste of time that was.

There is nothing there that would make me think the MOT guy is taking the piss, however there is plenty there to get me worried if that was my car. Seems the brakes are shagged and the suspension is worn with a spring about to snap on you.

There are also a number of things you can see visually yourself and go through with them. I am wondering how you are able to test exhaust emissions at home though?

Even the load sensing valve? How can that be defective?

Also, suspension excessive play? What's that supposed to mean? Failing dampers? None of them are leaking.

He's not arsed about the suspension as coilovers will be fitted after the belts are done hence trying to avoid spending money where it's not needed but we knew about that.

Looks like he may have to spend sooner than he anticipated though.

The exhaust is virtually brand new.

Pads have loads on them too. How do you cure an inbalance? Bleed the system?

An exhaust being brand new has no bearing on an emissions test. Excessive play in suspension will be bushes. If it was a damper, they would have said damper. And the brake load valve is a mechanical part, and mechanical parts can brake. I think your trying to make this something its not.

lol well I think it's safe to say you would expect it to pass one don't you?

I'm saying it how I've interpreted it, that's all.

I've driven the car myself and the brakes and suspension felt fine and I know my friend is useless when it comes to mechanics so that's the only reason I am skeptical.

It'll get sorted anyway, just trying to keep costs down so that the belts can get done then suspension, brakes and exhaust will be replaced with aftermarket equipment.

My cup failed on the rear brakes showing little or no effort at a RenaultSport specialist stealership last week so the problem is still going on. Go in armed with the vosa document. Can't help on the others I'm afraid. If it was me though I would take it to another garage for an mot and see what they throw up if your speculative of what they've said.

They've probably said the brake valve is defective as its not connected up, typical mot failure on these.

That's what I was thinking but the update was released years ago so I'm not sure.

some garages won't pay attention to the vosa notes.

i have this email from vosa that someone forwarded to me:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your recent telephone enquiry.
I have viewed our VOSA technical database which has given me the following information regarding Brake efforts on a Renault Clio Cup 172.

Renault Clio Cup 172 & 182 Rear Brake efforts
Clio Cup rear brakes max effort is normally about 30 kg on the rear.
Renault advise that they have had the same where the effort can be 10kg but when road testing the brakes are fine. Renault also advise that in most cases if rear disc and pads are replaced the effort creeps up to 30 after the brakes have been bedded in.
Note: Some vehicles may return quite high readings. There have been instances reported where this may be due to seized components or incorrectly adjusted valves.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Many Thanks

So it had a fractured spring and a binding brake and these aren't things you thought it would be a good idea to fix?

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
I got done with the rear brake thing to the tune of £200. I only found out about it the other week when I broke down and a CS member turned up. I will be getting that vosa document for the next MOT.

Does anyone know where can I get the official document so the garage believe it?

Why dont you get repaired what you know "needs" to be done. Then get it tested somewhere else and compare outcomes?

if the emissions are high, change the front lambda sensor...cups have 2 sensors but change the front 1 first

All the items you have listed as a fail are normal for a Cup that has not been looked after. The rear brake issue does not mean you can mention the VOSA tester notes and they pass them automatically, therear brakes still have to work reasonably and evenly. It's not the end of the world fixing the car up himself and save a great deal of cash. The Brake load sensor bit was a joke really.

  172
not as much of a joke as my most recent MOT.. failed on

Steering wheel- just the usual thumb grip wear
play in track rod end
Tyre been mounted on the rim in correctly 2 the walls directions-the outside edge is on the inside and vice versa
seized load sensing valve

other than that my cup was ok

  172
Failed on thumb grip wear?????????????

yep where they have split apparently it doesnt move freely throught there hands and on the fail sheet it states

steering wheel in condition likely 2 cause injury to the driver... needless 2 say i laughed at him n told him what he could do

  172
dont bother looking at my tyres tbh with you but i see where your coming from... nothing that carnt easily be rectified

Brake imbalance can be solved as easily as dismantling and cleaning and greasing caliper and sliders.

This should also sort the brake binding.

Mine failed on that stuff last yr and the garage tried to do me for £300 to replace front brake discs and pads with standard ones!

  172DD Cup
not always. i had brake imbalance on the rear on mine and it was the same after replacing one of the calipers. strongly suspect it's the bias valve that's corroded internally.

  421 Cammed 172
I guess so.

But his is the front brakes as was mine. Either way they'll benefit from a good look over and clean/re-grease.

  172DD Cup
yeah they said mine didn't put out enough effort on one side. i know they shouldn't anyway, but difficult to argue when one side reads 40 and one side reads 150!
