Cup owners, need some advise + 182 also

ok,

im selling my 172MKII 53reg 37k good condition hopefully for around £7,000 but £6500-£6,800 should be ok. i have £5800 left to pay my loan off so that leaves me with around £800-£1000 spare + £7500 max from a personal loan.

so worst case = £8200 for a new clio 172cup or 182cup. problem is apart from no aircon is the lack of ESP, ABS on a 172 cup. i love the looks and i know performance will be brisk but i dont know if i can live without ESP + ABS.

has anyone ever locked up and sh*t their pants ? how easy is it to do in the wet if your hard on the brakes (like if you have to do an emergancy stop maybe)

also will it be possible to find a decent 182 for £8500 ? most seem to be hanging at £9500-£10,000 (obviously id like cup packs but a full fat isnt nessesary)

they can be a bit twitchy in the wet but id have thought better tyres would sort that out.

youd never know it didnt have abs etc the brakes are really good.

FACT: ESP hardly ever cuts in on a 172

FACT: ABS can be a godsend but 99.9% of the time you dont use it

Buy a cup!

I have had almost no incidents of locking up. I know there are times where you have no chance to react without ABS but try and drive as carefully as poss, look as far ahead as you can. How many 16v have no abs or ESP and have no probs. The brakes are very good on the Cup as long as you can brake without just slamming on. Just buy it mate...you wont regret it!

You never know when you will lock the brakes. ABS is a must on cars IMHO (after running a 300bhp Impreza wihout ABS!).

Traction control is for girls though

yes but on a light hatch ABS is not as much of an issue as a 300BHP subaru. On my 172 the ABS only ever came on when I was messing about to se what it felt like!

hmmm interesting. i do love the way a cup stands out but il have to ponder on it a little while longer.

btw when was the last cup made i.e what year and do you think il be able to get a 182 for £8500 ?

ABS is good, but even better, go on advanced driving course and learn proper cadence braking etc. ABS in general only helps you maintain better control, it does not shorten the stopping distance.

I am no great driver but having learnt the basics on skid control course it made me a lot more confident with my Cup - and to be honest I have not managed to lokc the brakes on it at all except on purpose.

I have a cup, and yes, I did lock up in the wet and sh*t my pants. Skidded into some traffic cones. So no damage to me, the car or anyone else thank god.

BUT, this was entirely my fault for driving too fast in wet and slippery conditions. If you adjust your driving style to suit the conditions you will be fine.

172Cup is a bit more raw if you know what I mean...

I have the fatty version, with cup packs... and it drives quite nicely.

ABS will help you in those "OH SH*T" moments, when your foot tries to put your brake pedal through the floor.... and for some reason, it doesnt want to come-off!

I have a 172 Cup and did swap ends coming out of a roundabout in the wet. It took all of my driving ability and a large dolop of luck to avoid hitting any curbs or barriers. Ive since changed the contisports for some decent Dunlops and have had no such problems in the last 18 months. The acceperation in the wet has improved dramatically as well. Getting the power down with the old contis was a skill in itself.

I still say buy the Cup. You will enjoy, but spend good money on good tyres.
