Today I got some goodies in the post

Which happened to be new track rods and track rod ends after realising that mine had lots of play when I went for my cambelt doing

I peeled back the rubber gaitor to reveal the connection. This is my first time playing around with steering components properly, they usually go right above my head so it's really really good to learn how they work

I then cracked the TRE nut off (16mm for reference). To enable the ball joint to stop spinning I jacked it up so that the weight of the spring acted upon the taper, when this force is equal or more than the force on the taper it stops it from spinning and comes off.

Car in the most fun position, wheel off and me playing with it

I then went and got a viscous fan spanner. This has a 32mm and 36mm end on it but I only required the 32mm side.

Due to lack of room where the inner track is, the tool has to be cut down to enable to undo the nut

All off
and as guessed, loads and loads of play in both ball sockets. Very sloppy feeling.

I then measured the old track rod and adjusted the new track rod and end to suit. Screwed it back on.

Lots of copper grease applied and the new one was tightened up

I then tackled the other side. A lot easier than the other simply because I knew what I was doing and had the tool ready.

That was all sorted, went for a drive and it's not pulling at all to any one side so looks like my measurement worked. Ideally I will be getting it properly tracked again in the future once I get some new rubber on but i'm glad it's okay for now
I then dressed the plastics with AF revive and washed the wheels and sealed them with a third coat of Poorboys wheel sealant. Really happy with how it's turned out now. I really need to take some decent photos in some better places! Apologies for the standard driveway shots.
