Was never a fan of Arma, or Arma 2. Just found military 'simulators' are a bit naff really. Theres a mod that is currently taking the PC scene by storm though for anyone who hasn't heard of it called DayZ based around a zombie apocalypse. 250 square km of open space.

It's pretty simple, you spawn, you try to survive and if you bump into a player you don't know you shoot them in the face. Or you could team up maybe.

A few of my gaming buddies have been playing this for a while.

As a fan of L4D(2) I was intruiged by the zombie survival aspect of it but from what I'm hearing it has pretty much descended into a PvP multiplayer deathmatch shooter. The veteran players just hang around butchering the newbies and stealing their stuff. If you can stick with it and maybe team up with some others it's supposed to be great fun but it can be a grind to begin with.

Personally I'm keeping my eye on the Steam sales. If the ArmA:Combined Operations pack (You need the expansion as well to play DayZ) is on sale I'll pick it up for a go of this. I'm not paying £30 to play an alpha version mod that I may very well hate though.

You do find some of the people who are more geared out tend to pick off new comers, you just need to stay clear of certain areas though. They're making a lot of changes that will mean you will have to look to others in order to survive, like perk training.

Someone might be able to give you a blood transfusion, where as the other may know how to repair certain items. Crap like that...

Every game has it's bell-ends in fairness

Yeah I've heard that they're trying to tone down the PvP aspects. And to be honest I've only got my mates experiences to go off and they're complete b******s and so are the ones doing the butchery of newbies. From the sounds of it there are certain "hotspots" where people go to kill each other - Large towns and military installations etc - So I suppose you can just avoid those.

As they continue to build and improve it's only gonna get better and Arma is only going to come down in price. If they continue to improve the teamplay aspect of it then I'll definitely be more interested. It's just that, like you, I have no interest in Arma itself and so aren't too bothered in a mod that plays like Arma but with some zombies thrown in. If they can genuinely make it into a cooperative zombie apocalypse survival type game with aspects like character continuity, real time, food, repairing kit, specialisations etc etc then I'd be all over it.

Kind of a shame they didn't start the mod on Hl2 engine or something, but I play it none-the-less!

What do you think of the game?

I may give this a bash myself when the steam summer sale hits (if it hits). Dont particularly want to spend much on ARMA II :dead:

A gaming buddy of mine has just started playing it and said this:

I have to say people bugged me to DL this for about a week before I finally tried it out, and even then only because I already have Arma2 installed on my PC.

But let me tell you: this is the single best mod I have ever played since DC for Battlefield 1942.

It is exciting, suspenseful, and more addicting than crack cocaine. (I stopped playing Diablo 3 after I installed the mod and got it working) Sure, it is glitchy as f**k, sure Hoff...errr I mean bandits will kill you and skull f**k your corps for a can of beans, but the game is simply amazing. You start out with nothing, noda, zip, zilch, squat. And you scavenge and hunt until you have a few basic tools, so you have that feeling of progressing as you get better loot and equipment. But its not like RPG grinding, or FPS run and gunning. You start out with only the weapon between your ears and it is your most powerful. If you are careful and aware of your surroundings you will survive and prosper, then you WILL die and you WILL rage because you have to start all over. But it makes those few moments when everything does go right mean even more.

How much does it move you when you die in BF3? How much do you giggle when you simply shoot another player in CoD for the 100th time that day? In dayz every death is more bitter and every victory is sweeter. If some t**t pisses you off, just killing him once is immensely satisfying and it doesn't have to be a one in a million head shot or amazing feat of gaming skill either, just the simple fact that you killed his virtual alto ego is enough because you know that he now has to restart with nothing and is probably throwing his keyboard out a window.

Even finding a simple handgun is exciting because it totally changes the way you approach and play the game. I found a bike once...a simple, shitty little bike, but I was stoked because it totally changes things; the map is huge and your character will literally die of thirst/hunger if you try to run from one side to the other (takes several hours), but with a freaking bicycle you can move from town to town quickly, and even outrun zombies with ease. I squealed with joy when I found that bike. Just a stupid f**king bicycle, what other game can get that kind of an emotional connection with the player, from a stinking bicycle no less?

Just the way the players behave around one another is a fascinating psychological experiment and incite into the human mind. When you see another player, do you shoot them to take their loot? Do you hide? Do you try and help them? If you help them then you put yourself at risk because they may kill you for your loot. It is interesting to see the different ways in which different people behave in the game because the decisions they make--do they take a risk and help noobies? Do they shoot first and ask questions later out of extreme self defense, do they hide and go it alone, or do they set up ambushes to specifically target other players?-- These actions speak a certain degree to the player's real life character and disposition, much more so than the mere technique they use to frag people on a regular PvP FPS.

It is also the scariest game I have played since Silent Hill 2. The sounds the zombies make when they see you and chase you is chilling, and when you have good loot and don't want to die, running around in the dark hearing their growls, not knowing where they are, is very suspenseful. (I slow walked right into one once...) Seriously very well done audio. I don't even listen to music when I play, because you can hear zombies growl, bandits walking around or shooting at you, or even hear bandits/players talking on direct/area voip chat. The audio really enhances the situational awareness which is very important with the game being as stealth and tactics oriented as it is.

I'm nearly sold on this now. £25 on Steam at the moment for the full ArmaII pack that you need...

It is really, really tense. Sweaty palms galore LOL. Not played anything like it...

The other night my mate and I got the jump on these clan members, took 4 of them out from a hillside and went to take their truck. As we started looting the bodies they restarted the server.

So bitter, really pissed me off after that.

From what ive seen of gameplay videos the game appears to be very demanding but doesnt appear very visually pleasing, perhaps its just poor optimization on the game engine i dont know. But as above, ive had my eye on this for a while and if ARMA2 appears on Steams summer sales (which is likely) i will probably pick up a copy.

I imagine ARMA's devs will soon realise they are shifting lots of copies due to this mod and will officially approach the devs for ARMA3.

Arma 2 engine is 5-6 years old now so it's not surprising. The maps are absoloutely MASSIVE so you're never going to see cutting edge graphics.

It's also the only game that's managed to convey my mates campness.

Yeah, a mate of mine lost his heavily armed and superbly equipped character that he'd been playing for 10 days when someone hacked the server and lowered the ground by 50m. Everybody on the server dead.

Is Arma2 a single player or online?

So to get the dayz mod I would need to purchase Arma2 first??

Just a few screen shots with two of us rocking it out picking off people for their loot. (+ a few old version shots sneaking at night)

These two blokes claimed to be friendly and unarmed...then suddenly opened fire on me. Which turned out just great for them LOL.

In a few of them screen shots above, you can see some big buildings in the distance, can you go inside buildings like this? Or are there only a few you can venture inside of?

Looks and sounds pretty awesome.

When a server starts up or restarts random houses are made accessible but not all. Big buildings like the churches, the office block you see there and power stations etc are always open though.

One thing i will say though is that I can't play it for more than an hour at a time, it's tiring! You have to be alert pretty much all the time or you will die.

Those two players (who sounded like they were straight off geordie shore) who followed us in that last screen shot, were eyeing up my mates DMR rifle but they appeared to be unarmed, so we just took refuge in there with them. You can't trust anyone you don't know lol

Pretty much, but it's the same for most MP games. It's not only that though, you will most likely die if you're on your own. If a zombie breaks your leg or if you fall, and you've not morphine on you...you're fcked basically. Loads of scenarios where you'd be left for dead.

That's what makes it such a great game even in alpha stage. No-one experience is ever the same. Especially when encountering back-stabbing geordie ass hats lol. It's interesting to see how people play when they know they can get away with it!

I have been playing this over the weekend, playing with a couple of people I know but having trouble getting to meet up.

I originally started with an open mind, letting people go on their way but it doesn't seem to be the way to go. Everyone you meet will try and stab you in the back and try and kill you for your kit :(

Everyone I meet now gets an axe/bullet in the head before they can do anything. It is sooo frustrating after spending an hour getting your kit together only for someone to come and kill you when you were offering blood etc :(

I just hopped on to try and raid the airfield (best loot spawns there) and got crushed by a door.

f**king hell. Going to give it a miss for awhile, it's great fun but when bugs like that happen it feels like you've spent all that time for nothing!

Activision are aparently doing something along the lines of DayZ based on The Walking Dead franchise in 2013.

This is what puts me off. I don't mind a bit of PvP to spice things up but what really attracts me is the cooperative side of it - Meeting randomers, swapping some bits of kit, maybe carrying out a raid together and then going on your own way. Getting shot at by everyone you meet doesn't really interest me as much.

You'd be surprised, pauper. ;)

iMac 27"
i7 Quad
16GB RAM
1GB VRAM

I'm guessing it'd beast it. Lol. I was asking more if people knew of running it through Bootcamp.

No Idea mate, Arma 2 is pretty spec hungry even today. It will run through bootcamp though!

Me being a dick at the airfield lol.

Have had a hard copy of ArmA 2 for years so when I saw this on the net last week I was intrigued. Ended up downloading of Steam to get the addon and after a couple of failures in getting it to run managed to have a go very late on Saturday/Sunday morning.

Wanted to test the real time aspect so joined a UK server and sure enough I spawned on the beach in darkness with light just about breaking in the distance, just like outside my window. Crawled a few metres inland and saw 2 silhouettes, that started to walk towards me. Crawled in the other direction and ended up quitting due to being knackered and scared!

Went back to it on Sunday and wandered (aka crawled shitting bricks with walkers/crouchers/crawlers all around me) around a few towns. Found a dead player with some equipment including an axe in the first, took out a couple of zombies in a barn in the second where I also found a Lee Enfield. Walked out of the building I found it in and accidently fired a round off, cue sprinting out of the town with a zombie in tow.

After he was dispatched I carried on exploring, had some water and noticed I needed some food. Badly. Stumbled across a village and snook over to a barn, full of zombies though so retreated. Picked one off and a few more ran over but didn't spot me. Went a bit further down the road and tried the same again, this time about 4 of the came sprinting at me so I tried to dodge them but got injured and ran to the barn. Held off for a while in there but then blood loss (I think - blurred vision). Used some bandages, found no food or anything else useful in the barn so ran for the nearest house and shut the door. Nothing useful in here either, I started to pass out. Got too close to the closed entrance and a zombie hit me through it (quite buggily) and broke my leg. I was dead shortly after.

I don't remember what I last did on BF3 lol.

My second life was much less successful, headed straight for a hill, got lost in a forest and then the PC cut out. Assuming PSU failure lol.

Hopefully get it sorted ASAP and find some other players on it.

I just went on a quiet server to raid the medical tents for some supplies.. Some dirty rat b*****d was sitting prone at the tent next to me taking shots with his little silenced pistol. I just casually crouch ran to cover a few feet away and waited for him to turn the corner. He wasn't stupid enough to, but he clearly felt like a bell-end as he then kicked me from the server lol.
