Last night when I started the Clio to drive home I noticed an extra 'whining' noise from under the bonnet - the noise is low, sort of like a hum, and changes pitch as you press the accelarator. Also linked to this, it's feckin stinking inside the car and extremely strong under the bonnet. Smells like an electrical burning smell if you know what I mean.
Car is performing fine but I'm seriously concerned. I popped the bonnet to have a look/sniff and it seems to be coming from the area behind the driver's side headlight unit. I'm doubly worried as I know there were a few Clios that went up in some as a result of an electrical fault in this area (although I think that was due to a fault with the xenons?).
I think it could be something to do with the alternator? (because of the change in pitch with accelaration?).
I'm seriously worried. Anyone have an idea what could be wrong? I'm heading to the dealer tomorrow morning but if anyone can suggest what might be wrong it might help them sort it out.
BTW, it's a 172 with 18k and 22 months old (so still in warranty...), no engine mods.
Cheers
Ally
