Do you have noisy 16v power steering

I topped up my 16v power steering fluid the other day, it wasnt below MIN but close. I used slick50 universal power steering fluid, and surprisingly it has not only cured the noisy pump (its completely silent now), but also made the steering far lighter and a lot more responsive. Wish I had done this ages ago!!!

After youve topped it up, make sure you turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times without the engine running (ie. no power steering) and also with the engine running, whilst leaving the cap off the reservoir. This gets any air out the system (so the manual says). This may have helped on mine as well.

not had a noisy pump (touch wood) but the aux belt slips over the pump pulley making the most horrid of screeching noise, and im too lazy to change it lol.

Thats another thing I had to tighten (just fitted a new alternator). Its a bugger to adjust!

hence i cant be bothered hahaha.

Top balls to you though, its freezing outside....even in my garage....its nipple fracturingly cold!

Used to have a noisy p/s pump on my MK2 golf, did 60K in 3 years with it like that all the time!! Wish id done something with mine!!!!!

Its damn cold, but when youre wrestling to get a rad back in, while slicing your hands to pieces on sharp bits of obscure metal (thanks Renault!) you kinda forget it! :D

lol, my maximum finger speed, clenching force and dexterity is inversely proportinate to temperature......my body dosent work at these temps! haha

lol, exactly right. My hands were so cold I had trouble with those springy clips that hold the rad pipes on, who thought those stupid things up? Whats wrong with jubilee clips?

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

i really really dont like them either....good idea in essence, but you have to fanny around with massive pliers to open them.....

there a tool for them hoseclips thats marvellous.it has a like a clamp on a long cable with some pliers on the end.you can get the clamp easily on the clips and because of the remote cable idea the pliers dont get in the way/need to struggle with them in tight places.the worst clips are them from the factory(they have a small part thats crushed to tighten them up)which you have to butcher to get off.god they piss me off!

jay those clips are evils things designed by the devil!

do renault garages replace with jubilee clips after hacking them off/

I will never undertsand til the day i die why they use those horrible folded clips, worse still them seem to leave the fold where its least accessable - there must be a weekly bonus in the factory to who can place the most awkward clip!

we just use normal hoseclips because you have to butcher the old factory clips.your right about the folded bit(that you need to undo)is always pointing the direction where you cant get your pliers in.god the french sometimes

can you confirm the max / min level on the reserviour?

Is max the top of the cirular bit in the middle?

I thought that the level was shown at max when the fluid is level with the top of the plastic bit in the centre? so i removed some fluid yesterday to get it down to that level and its louder!!???

how do i tell max/min??

i filled mine up to the top of the grooves in the funnel bit that sits inside the cap. the resevoir hasnt got any markings on it that i could see.

i checked the manual the the center bit if badly described donoted the max & min levels of the fluid, but like i say i reduced mine to nearer the max as it was overfull sopposedly and it sounds worse, ill fill her up to the top of the groves tonight and see what happens

mines got a layer of grime i cant get off, so cant see anything. i think the top of the grooves is max?

the thing is in the middle on the inside - difficult to explain, the electric ones have larks on the outside but not the mechanical 16v/willy ones.

either wya who cares because i filled mine almost to the top of the grooves and it sounds perfect now! Im chuffed to bits as this has been annoying me ever since i bought the car.

All hail the chairman!!!! :)

the 172 def. has; the 16v i couldnt see one, but like i said its pretty mucky, so could well have. the haynes manual does say one of the models doesnt have a level gauge, not sure what one tho, could well be the 16v, but then haynes arent always right!
