Engine building.

  'Mia' Rover Mini 35
I suppose re-buildings/building engines is less common in newer cars but modifying and building engines is something I'm really interested in. Mainly for the Mini ;).

Anyone had a go? Tips, Tricks, recommended machine shops?

The engine in the Mini is coming out in the next few weeks, So I thought whilst its out, its perfect timing for a new clucth, core plugs, water pump, timing chain, oil pump and general clean up.

I may look at an uprated cam as well, for that little bit more performance.

Don't do what I did - a few little tweaks ended up with a 12G295 cooper head, 1.5 roller tip rockers, 286 cam, 1.5 inch su, on and on!

Best thing to do is buy Dave Vizards book - read it, then read it again. Then go have a cup of tea, then read it again

I'm about 3/4 way through. I'm a slow reader, have also been watching the Janspeed DIY Mini video's on YouTube from the 90s really detailed. Feature Vizard himself and cooper, and hopkirk :p

Building Engines is so much fun and gets highly addictive starts small and gets rapidly bigger ... higher CC and bhp

A good workshop manual wouldn't do any harm - Don't think I would have even started the F4R I'm doing at the moment without it. Also a good torque wrench.

Claire's sister gave me one of them for Xmas lol, must start building it soon - a bit different to the last engine I built but hey ho, still good fun :)

FLOL! I take it you scanned those pictures in as there's no way a digital camera was invented then!

Almost true actually mate!
That digi camera cost me 500 quid and took 8 pictures of that resolution before it was full!
was back in the 1990s!

I was programming power station main control computers. The servers were 50,000 quid each and had 2*500 meg processors and a gig of ram. They were therefore far less powerful than a 50 quid entry level smartphone now. Flol.

Funny how times change.

Got one of these myself for a Xmas present too. How self-righteous and smug did I feel when I got in touch with the manufacturer and said "...one of my valve-springs appears to be missing from my engine". It was almost like I knew what I was talking about. Unless they can run on 7 springs? ;)

D.
