Engine noise

  Monaco 172 (5/468)
Bought my Clio 172 3 month ago, 51 plate 22k on the cloak all round nice motor and well happy with it, Yesterday i went to pick the wife up and heard an wierd whinning noise coming from the engine :dapprove: now im no mechanic so i took it to a garage who quoted me £180 to take the cover of the timing belt to check where the noise is coming from and thats before they even fix it, is there a way of finding what the noise is with out doing this.

Please help :S

when its cold the noise isnt there only when it gets warm,
I can make a audio file if it helps, I got told it could be a bearing ?

its like a grinding noise like a wheel going round and catching on something, its a constant noise and dont seem to get any louder when i increase the revs.

mine does the same mate but cant for the life of me figure out what it is. is a whining that gets worse as the revs go on. I best describe it as it sounds like the car in reverse gear but not as loud. I've got a 172 cup so i believe it can't be the aux idler with me because the cups dont have one

Yep Renault say bumper and light off it can be done with them in place to save time.

Yep no AUX belt tensioner the cambelt has some though.

No my cup doesn't have air con mate. Can someone just confirm to me, what tensioners does the 172 cup actually have?? If i got my aux belt changed what else should i get changed as well. Im positive the noise is coming from this area so i think something definately needs replacing. Not too clued up on this particular subject though so what will i need to replace as well as the aux belt?

B

Brown.

the noise comes from the starter motor pal, dont worry your self, it goes quiet after a few mins.....

Cambelt tensioners only. There 3 from memory on the cambelt.

Aux belt on a Cup is easy the alternator is use to tighten it should be replaced instead of resused IMO all the time and its only £11 or so so why not when if they do fail it taken out the cambelt 995 of the time which is a £1k or so bill.

cups with no air con as edde says use the alt to tension the belt always replace it once removed. either 1 or 2 idlers and 1 tensioner on the cambelt.

without sounding completely and utterly dumb, what are those cog things that the aux belt is wrapped around, is this the pulleys? are the cambelt tensioners hidden away? The only thing that baffles me about this whole whining noise issue i have is that car only does it when actually moving, doesnt do it when just parked up and i rev the car. Does this give any clues to anyone. Sounds like a cooper s supercharger the whine does lol

only does it while moving possible wheel bearing, hard to say with out hearing it. the cambelt tensioner/idlers are behind the cambelt covers, yes they are called pulleys

so how many pulleys are their on the clio cup that the aux belt goes around? If its one of these pulleys that's doing it, any way of me finding out which one?

Its wrapped round the PAS pump the coolent pump and the alternator. the cup uses its alternator to tighen the belt up. so there no tensioers etc.

i'm reckoning then it could definately be the tensioner on the cambelt. Is this a big job to get replaced and will it mean having a whole cambelt change?

We took the Aux belt off and put it back and the noise has gone, maybe job done ?

It goes round the crackshaft then the coolent pump them the alternator then the PAS pump and back again.
No tensioner or anything belt is tensioned by a bracket on the alternator.

Yep 4~5hours for cambelt.
