Engine wear advice please?

  Clio 172 phase 1
Okay so sorry if this is all a bit ignorant but I have to ask or ill never know.

Right so firstly I serviced the 172 about 5k ago i used 5w40 valvoline ... But I've noticed all my previous Renault service and garage services have been 10w 40 now is the engine worn to 10w40 or am I fine?

Reason for asking is I had all belts and dephasar done 3k ago and over the past few days there is a rattle coming from the cam / possible dephasar area it doesn't sound like bottom ends more like a naff cam or the dephasar is going agen! Wich I will be throwing through renaaults window if that's the case. So can any one shead some light? What sort of issues with cams and big ends and all usall happen? I've just hit 90k and the car has stacks of history to suggest its a decent engine with love not a flat out rat out one.

Also some one should do a stickey on what mileage common faults happen around and things like that as a buyers guide if you like eg 73k belts and dephasar...

If you've got death rattle you'd know about it, generally implies low oil pressure so worn engine bearings. Dephaser will make it sound like a non ecu'd diesel like an old land rover.

Can you upload a vid at all. Tbh it isn't the nicest sounding engine and makes all sort of crap noises at the best of times. Could be something stupid like a manifold bolt / spring making it rattle. I had that and was the last thing I searched for.

Ill try and upload a video now took it to a mates garage who said sounds like something's loose ( vibrating ) on the dephasar area could be a loose pully or similar.. Is there any on issue around this description? There is oil in it so its not that at high revs the noise isn't audible over the norm as the revs drop and its hunts the nose becomes worse and it it's got worse over the weekend.

The difference between a 5w40 and 10w40 is only the thickness when cold, so once warmed up it should make no difference which of those 2 oils you are on.

I'm on 5w40 Fully synthetic any ideas on that top end noise i had the pully done not so long ago so I'm trying to rule that out

put it this way, if it's something like a bit of death rattle it'll cost all the same to fix, another engine.

just pay attention to warning lights ( stop means STOP ) not drive for 1hr and then check.

Doesn't sound too bad to be honest, but videos are deceiving, any lack of power, oil consumption, fuel bad?

  Clio 172 phase 1
Fuel is fine oil is dead bang doesn't use a drop and power it's not lacking.... Just this noise has appeared over the last few days and got worse.... If its fucked :( balls ill have to get a new engine but in what way is it fucked? Lol the vid isn't much different to real life the noise is fairly accurate still...

Being it's at the front it could just be the injectors / rail rattling their tits off, it has happened before.

  Clio 172 phase 1
From standing facing it its gotta be top when you go level with the bottom end the noise is aparent it's above, it sounds either dephasar area or inlet cam area? ..... Is it possible the bolt holding the dephasar on is loose? Can that happen? If its bottom end dead gives me an excuse to do a turbo conversion and keep this as a project car lmao advantages ...would rather it just worked tho

Pulleys could be whacking of their stops, I recall reading something on here a while back but not sure when the issue was. you got anyone nearby to check it out at all? might be best to just pay someone qualified to check it. noises you can chase forever.

No, if the engine is running then that bolt isnt loose enough to rattle, the pulley is held to the cam only by the bolt, so if it was that loose then the pulley would turn without turning the cam and you would have bent valves.

Yeh agree ill drop it up the workshop and leave it for our mechanic to look over ... With regards to the injectors it's got a horrid idle and it hunts.. I'd say the fuel level is showing 70miles till empty and the noise is from middle mani as well so could this be an injector would it really sound like this??

  Lotus Elise
That certainly isn't an injector noise that's a I'm about to s**t myself noise. Could be all manor of causes, was the crank pully bolt torqued properly? Ran with enough oil blah blah blah either way I'd be shopping for a new engine.

Just taken it to my local guy it's the aux belt tensioner as soon as he put pressure on the tensioner the noise completely went.... It's a brand new tensioner too... Thanks for all the help :)

Thank god for that! Was the tensioner not tight?

  Clio 172 phase 1
The tensioner was slightly loose but thank god it's all okay now! Noise is still there but not as bad going to be buying a new genuine tensioner and belt :)

  Fiesta ST2 MP215
Glad it's not that bad dude, AUX belts isn't huge money so just get it done, use genuine parts as well for the sake of £10 more it's so worth it.

  Clio 172 phase 1
Just an update... It wasn't the aux belt i removed the injector cover today and the under tray and found a mahooosive bolt " i immediately shat my self " .... further inspection and shown it was the bottom alternator bolt had came out and the alternator was just smacking around, i loosened the top mount and found it had actually broken part of the mount off.. any how its all back together now after some muscling... in case anyone else has a similar issue could be worth a look. :)
