Enhancement Detail - RenaultSport Clio 182 in Racing Blue finished in Zymol Glasur

  Megane R26
This fine example of a 182 is owned by a very enthusiastic, budding detailer so was very clean and well cared for but suffering from quite severe swirling, RIDS and various other defects.

The agreement was that the owner was to prep the car for me (so no pics of this I'm afraid!!) and I was to quickly wash the car when it arrives at MCC HQ, and do what I could with the paint within a day or so. Then to also lay down some firm protection - we opted for Zymol's ever impressive Glasur Wax...

The owner lives in Manchester, so a fair old mission down to me in Walsall, but the car was only prep'd yesterday so still looking quite fresh.

I quickly cleaned over the wheels with Autobrite's Very Cherry then snow foamed the car with the new formula Concours Car Care Tutti Frutii:

Next the car was hand washed with Lather, CarPro Mitt and Zaino Bucket, dried with Aelous 901 and various towels then the paint was assessed for thickness.

After trialling various combinations, we agreed that the bonnet and roof which were most severely defected would be cut with Scholl S3 and Spider Sandwich Pad via Rotary, and due to time constraints the rest of the car was corrected with D300 and MF Discs via DA. This was all finished down with Autobrite's very impressive new 'Anti Hologram' Finishing Polish, then a final Eraser wipedown to ensure that there was no filling from polishing oils. I have found the Scholl to fill a fair bit at times on some paints...

Some of the correction shots:

The bonnet was suffering from a fair amount of some form of 'pitting' which is visible in the pics.

Some deeper defects remained which were not to be dealt with on this occasion - this was an Enhancement, not full correction:

After:

I always find that the MF system whilst technically able of finishing down well in terms of not inflicting hologramming (with the right technique) sometimes the clarity of the paint is somewhat questionable, so I always follow this up with a Rotary and finishing polish pad, which pays dividends to overall clarity and levels of gloss.

The amazing colour was really beginning to show after the defects had been removed:

We finished with Zymol Glasur which the owner is looking to purchase at some point, so I showed the owner how best to apply and remove it and assisted him doing so:

I finished up with:

- Tripple on the more intricate areas which couldn't be machine polished
- Crystal on Glass
- Mercury on Exhausts
- Mint Rims on Alloys
- CarPro PERL on tyres

and finally, quite a few finished pics, for the owners benefit... (please excuse the volume)

Thanks for reading...

10 points and a gold star to anyone who can guess what car I have on tomorrow...?

After we have a BMW E91, black R35 GTR, Ferrari 360, Impreza RB320 and a rather rare Alpina B3S.

Thanks,

Russ.

Re: Enhancement Detail - RenaultSport Clio 182 in Racing Blue finished in Zymol Glasu

jenic - yes it is!!

fletch - depends what's used and expectations etc but around £179 for a Clio sized car including a layer of premium wax (such as this £100 one) and Nanolex on the glass etc.

Clarkey - just parts of the front bumper like around the fog lights etc. They are machineable but not in a single day where efforts are put towards the larger panels. If I had a couple of days on a car then I'd get it all sorted.

Thanks all :)

Re: Enhancement Detail - RenaultSport Clio 182 in Racing Blue finished in Zymol Glasu

Check paint thickness before you do anything. The paint on some of these Renault colours can be very hard. Don't go chasing down every last scratch when you're starting out - concentrate on the swirling and restoring the gloss/colour to the paint more so...

Re: Enhancement Detail - RenaultSport Clio 182 in Racing Blue finished in Zymol Glasu

I'm not too far away...

I have another identical tomorrow!

Then on the RS front I have about 4 197's, 4 182's, possibly 3-4 172's, 2 R26's and a couple of 250's coming soon... I need a holiday!

Right ok I have nothing to check the paint thickness :(

Ive got megs
#80
#82
#83 and 205
Should start with the least abrasive? With not being able to test thickness?

The older Megs stuff is a bit naff IMO. Keep 205 and look at adding 105 for deeper defects and maybe sell the rest...

Is this The Kids?

Yep certainly was.

Russ, as I said, amazing, I'm over the moon with the final finish. Never thought my paint would look so clear and deep.

Superb service, thoroughly enjoyed chatting to you and seeing how everything is done correctly.

Thankyou very very much :D

Great work. May I ask what pitting is? Is it like orange peel?

I have to laugh. RB just always looks utterly immense!

Russ how did you find the paint? Just very little consistency on Renault paint hardness.

Re: Enhancement Detail - RenaultSport Clio 182 in Racing Blue finished in Zymol Glasu

Cracking job you've made of it Russ, often read your write ups on detail jobs you've done and how well the car looks afterwards but got to see your work 1st hand before and it's very impressive. Could see Edd's car gleaming from miles away lol.

I find my RB very hard. It amazes me every time i do it. Paint thickness is OK.

Russ the car looks amazing as usual. Great rate as well :approve:

I don't know the ins and outs of what it is, but it looks like thousands of tiny little dots, all over the car. We guessed it might be damage left over from the volcanic ash from the other year, not much else we could think of that it might be.

I'm sure Russ will be able to explain in more detail what pitting technically is and how it caused.

I saw the car today and it's superb work that's been done.

Also with the "solvent pop" comments, according to Russ there is no chance that those area's have been resprayed.

"no chance" is a strong phrase, but he was very adamant that the cars clearcoat was very very thin, a portion of the roof has been resprayed, but it would seem unlikely that the rest of the car has.

The sills measured circa 128-130 microns.

The resprayed roof section was around 220-240.

The rest of the car was 132-140.

Russ explained that it had been corrected once before in its life, hence the thin clearcoat. Surely due to the paint depth readings, there is no way it could have been resprayed? Unless when they did it, they stripped it all the way back to bare metal?!?!

Looking at the pictures and reading the description, that would be my immediate suggestion. If the PDG readings don't back up a respray, possibly oversprayed clearcoat reacting? Mine occured on the top of the door and rear 3/4 after the lower part of my car was resprayed.

The depth gauge readings suggested a portion of the roof had been sprayed, could it be overspray from this then you think?
