exhaust blocking seat bolt

  Alpina B3, 172, 325i
Hi everyone,

hoping someone can help- i am fitting sparco seats and the rear bolt on passenger side is blocked underneath the car by the exhaust- i can get a socket on it but can't get an extension on there- the silencer blocks it. Any suggestions? Just had the sports exhaust fitted by mark fish and it's on very solidly, and i am working in the street with a trolley jack... better to get the car on a ramp somewhere and have the bolt off?

Just get a mate to pull it a bit. I did this when fitting the recaros and managed to wiggle the socket it.

Cheers Sam, why do i have no useful mates around at times like this! May have to get it on a ramp anyway, unless my wife is about to turn into my pit crew.

Haha. Can you not try and get a longish screw driver or something alike, and prise it with one hand while using the ratchet with the other ?

that might work. i'll report back however i do it, but have packed up today, too much rain and too little time. i was thinking i might have to get the exhaust off of its hangers. Unbelievable how long it takes to fit seats single handed.

The electronics have been really easy (it's a 172 cup) but didn't expect to have to drill the side mounts to fit the pretensioners (am using standard seatbelts at the moment), and although I fitted the driver's seat a week back, i need to remove it to take out the renault spacers/ vibration mounts. Never mind to then remove it all, spray the side mounts mondial blue, fit logos, lacquer, refit it all.

Should have got a garage to do it all!

unbolt the middle exhaust hanger(1bolt) from the car and the rear hanger (3 bolts)and that will let you lower the exhaust and then bolt it back so its sitting exactly where it was before if your worried about playing with adjustment. The flexi pipe will give you enough movement to get in at it.
