Fitting Compbrake alloy topmounts

  Golf GT & A4 Avant
I've searched for threads, and read them, searched some more, and read them and I still don't know so...

I bought the solid top mounts 2nd hand off here so didn't come with any instructions. the parts I have:
- the main top mount with its lock ring
- the top nut
- a sleeve/ collar approx 10mm tall
- a stepped washer/ collar

The washer and the sleeve I have no idea where they are supposed to go on the suspension strut and what order.

With the original top mount, is it just the big rubber bit on top I have to remove or anything else? I haven't taken these apart yet.

Anyone with their instuctions from the group buy still? I need your help

Unless they come off the original strut, I don't have the rubber O rings or rubber washers?

Should I get them with the top mount or will they be on the strut already?

Having trouble trying to buy a set of rubber O-rings and washers, and trying to find out the correct size.

Does anyone know the thinkness and diameters of these so I can start searching autofactors?

erm just measure the size of the threaded bit of the mount, and there about 1mm bigger, nice and snug fit, similar with the o-ring.

Id say they are around .5mm thick, and the o-ring is around 1mm thick.

I could take them off and measure properly, but to be honest, im pretty good at guessing :)

So the internal diameter is approx 1mm bigger than the actual strut, but does it matter what size outside diameter?

All sorted now.

Just spoke with Brent at Compbrake, top bloke. has sorted me out a full set of washers and o-rings for £10 and hopefully will post them out in the next couple of days.

What a difference it makes talking to the right guy. Cheers for all your help

mine didn't come with any rubber bits? should they?

I was told yes by the guys at compbrake when I asked if I really needed them. I guess it'll help the mount grip the strut turret better and stop metal on metal contact and wear

For those that would like to know......
rubber washers: x2 per top mount
Internal Dia = 45mm
External dia = 55mm
thickness = 2mm
Rubber O-Ring: x1 per top mount
Internal dia = 45mm
Thickness = 2mm

All fitted now?

Got them fitted over the weekend, and what a bl**dy nightmare! Couldn't get the top nuts of the struts and had to crank up the pressure on my compressor, then had to grind down a socket to fit the new top nut once the mounts were on. And where does the 10/15mm sleeve go? I couldn't see where it went and it didn't seem to fit anywhere so I left it off.

Anyway, turn in does feel nice. A real improvement over standard, but I fitted a set of Eibach Sportlines at the same time. Ride is a little firmer with the top mount aswell but nothing bad.

1 problem though, I'm still getting a knocking/creaking coming from my top mounts but it sounds a lot worse now. Only hear it when steering at low speeds. Do I now need to change the bearings that sit on top of the spring top hat under the top mount. I thought the top mounts would cure this!

I bet you its the actuall springs, I get this creaking first thing in the morning but once I have moved off its fine.

my car seems to "warm up" out of its creaks and groans as well! but i know that i still have an issue with my top mounts so need to get everything bought and sorted.

I did wonder this, but was out in the car for 3 hours Sat night after giving it a good bedding in session and it still creaked as I parked up. And still does it after every journey.

I'm running out of things for it to be. the chassic was originally modified instead of using the washers fix, but the solid top mounts eliminate all those parts. The talk on the other thread about the sleeve inside the the rubber was loose and a bad fit, but this was also removed with the solid top mount. This only leaves the strut itself, the spring top hat and the OE bearing left underneath the top mount. :dead:

IMO it will creak. Due to there being no flex at all. My coilover springs creak when parking and turning on full lock etc.

They shouldnt knock at all though, mine have stopped knocking completely.
