Fitting new no. plates

Need to fit new priv. plates this weekend - was considering using this double-sided adhesive stuff that seems to be used on some cars for the rear plate coz Im not keen on drilling new holes in a metal panel (53 Clio) - existing plate wasnt fitted correctly by dealer so dont want to use this as template for new one - may not sit square, etc.

Any experience using this sticky stuff or any tips. Are Clios supplied from factory with a couple of holes for mounting rear plate and is drilling a couple a new ones easy enough ?

On mine both front and rear are stuck on with this tape. No problems at all using jetwash both are still on ok. Just make sure plates are straight before you put stick, as once on they are a git to get off

No, they dont come with holes in the back.
The sticky is been fine on my mates clio. Just make sure you line it up right, cos its very sticky.

Also the old one is a total arse to get off

I had my first plates stuck on with adhesive from the garage and I had to heat them with a hair dryer to get the buggers off. Very well stuck on.

When I put my private plate on i used three sticky strips per plate, made sure Id cleaned thoroughly and all good. Can get them in Halfords.

There are holes as standard on the back of the Clios though, mine had them but were just covered by little stickers. Didnt need to use em.

Any particular brand of sticky stuff the best bet ?

Was just thinking of using it for the back as its a flat surface - is it OK for front aswell (thought mounting area had a slight curve on it ?)

Im having real problems getting my old plates off my 182.

I heated mine up for a little while with a hairdryer and it softened them up enough for me to pull them off, took a bit of persuation but worked.

I used the Halfords number plate kits (about £2.50) and they were plenty good enough. Worked fine on the curve on the front as well.

Be warned if you touch anything with the sticky pads it wont come off. You have to be 100% as to when you stick them on, make sure theyre straight lol!

Use sticky pads on mine - great stuff. Works really well.

Prepare the surface prior to sticking by making sure its really clean and dry. And make sure you put the plate on level or youll regret it when you cant get it off! Ha!

Yes the Halfords sticky pads are very good. Unbelievably strong.

Think the halfords ones come in a couple of different thicknesses. I used the thick ones. I did try some other ones but they just peeled off after 3 months. Stick with Halfords!

I used the thinner ones and they stuck on fine. Wasnt sure about the thicker ones as might mate the plate stick out.

Im sure both work fine though!!

Er why would you want to drill the car? You drill the holes in the number plate. If you use screws then just put some masking tape on the back of the plate, put the screws into the car (in the same holes!) and then position the plate. When your happy push and the screws will leave little imprints in the tape. Drill there, making the holes a little bigger that necessary to allow a little adjustment. Bingo.

Having said that the tape stuff is okay as long as you have a very clean, dry surface.

You could just take off the old plate hold firmly on top of the new one and drill through the holes into the one underneath.

Thats what I did when I was making holes for my plate on my last car. Then I knew the holes in the new plate were the same as the old one.

To be honest I think it looks neater without the screws.

I did mine the other week. I got the Halfords sticky pads. You get 3 in a box so buy 2 boxes (3 for each plate).

They also come with an alcohol soaked cleaning wipe to do the back of your new plates and the surface of the car. Try and clean up the car location as best you can and make sure you are not going to be sticking over old adhesives. It took me 10-15 minutes of picking and peeling to get the old ones off mine.

The pads are double sided and very, very sticky so peel one side off only and stick all 3 pads on each plate. One at each end and one in the middle. Then remove the other backing, line up as best you can and slap it on. Give it a good hard press for at least 10 seconds and it shouldnt come off.

holes are standard on the rear of the car. They have 2 white stickers over them from factory. see the pic below.

I wanted my own style plates on so told the dealer NO holes please, so he stuck them on with 2 very small peices of double sided so i could get it off easy.

Stuck mine on front and rear with souble sided no problems, as i did with my dynamique.

How do u get the old plates off? Mine seem like they are welded to the car - even my brother cant get em off............ and hes a GAS MAN.

leeds_182, how have they put them on? on my last dynamique they were riveted on so I had to drill them off!
