For future value and desirability RB 182 FF or Trophy



  RB + LY 182 FF
Hi all l currently own my 5th clio sport. A BG 182 ff, I have always wanted a RB and know they are a much desired colour like LY and numbers in the RB are similar to the trophy tho obv the trophy is a special edition.

I'm viewing both RBs and a trophy over the next couple of days.
In terms of holding its value which would people recommend.
The RB for the colour or
The trophy for what it is in its own right.

Not a fan of red.. But this trophy im viewing is a little tatty and needs plenty of tic , it is low milage which is a bonus.

I know most of the car reviews and press etc claim the trophy will hold its value and become a classic but surely a immacualte RB will become sought after too?
Any comments welcome
 
For holding value? It's a no brainer. The Trophy will be a future classic.

It doesn't matter about the condition, that can be improved.
 
Mine was a bargain. I could've made over a grand by selling it the next day! Kept it though and use it all the time. I'm gonna run it into the ground :stig:

I think the Clio Trophy will be a classic as it is one hell of a hot hatch. But I can't see them being worth a lot tbh. Maybe low low milage ones will get to 10k but that's it. A few low ones for sale at around the 7-8k mark now but can't see them selling for that. Possibly in a good few years though.

Trophy's will always be worth more than other 182's but they won't be classics and they're certainly not investments!!

V6 yes (but they will crash soon, guarantee!) but investing in any other Clio trying to get a return on your money is not going to work.

Go and buy an RS Turbo, XR2, Cosworth etc if that's your plan.

Didn't say I wanted to buy a clio for investment.. I have a house for that. Just on popularity and demand of both of these cars I do think a good example will be worth the purchase and was referring to sale of said car in the future .

Disagree I think a trophy will become a classic.

Eventually they will be worth money like all good hot hatches look at the 205 gti,as above rs turbo,xr2etc but probably not for a long time

I think trophys will eventually become a classic, but certainly won't ever command escort Cosworth kind of money, even low mileage minters.

Yes, the Trophy will be worth the same as your house come the time to sell.

Who's bitching?? I'm asking a genuine question, why do you think the trophy will be a classic? Calm yourself down.

Yes it's a good hot hatch but that doesn't make it a future classic. Look at the RS Turbos! They handle dreadfully, they rust, they aren't fast... But they are cast iron classics. The 205 GTI is by far a superior hot hatch to a XR2, but the XR2's are the ones holding the highest premiums.
You can't buy a rusted out shell of a mk1 XR2 for less than £2500.
That same money will buy you a really really tidy useable 205gti/Renault 5 turbo.

I don't think either will "hold their value" tbh, unless you buy it for less than the current going rate.
Neither are going to be going up in value any time soon, so unless you plan on holding onto it for ages, I'd go on preference and condition.
Me personally, I'd opt for a Trophy, but I really like red. Lol

Never asked or stated that I wanted it be a valuable investment. Was asking more in the sense of demand for resale and which would suit better for that purpose, both cheap with very low miles !

Only worth what someone is willing to pay for anything.

I have the RS with a valuation on it and even the invoice of sale 24 years ago but yet if i put it up for £10K and someone only wanted to pay £7500 for it then so be it, On the other hand it could go completely the other way.

That's what you said.

hes asking about holding its value though not making money. I read that as what is he going to be able to own for x amount of years and not loose money on depreciation. That was my interpretation of it anyway

that would be the last of my worries tho. I could get every one of the 5000 pounds back that i paid for my trophy, but i couldnt get the 2500 back that ive spent so far on it!! With the belts and bodyshop bill still to come!

As numbers go down of Trophy's they will be worth more, but that's not going to happen for quite a few years yet. I think they will end up a classic if kept completely original. Some of the William's are already going for silly money!

Dought it.
I bought mine with 3417 miles on the clock & sold it with 17000 miles, that was mint!
Don't get me wrong they were good cars but the drive compared to my mates R26R not even on the same planet.

They won't.

French hatchbacks don't have enough of a following.

Apart from some seats and some shocks, it's a worse spec than a normal 182!

Yeah, nowhere near the following of fords for example, but 205 gtis, willies, 5 turbos etc etc all command a premium for looked after models.

There's a 5 turbo for sale for £78k!!! I think that price is taking the piss a little though.

At the risk of repeating myself, £2500 will just about buy you a rusty/needs restoring Mk1 XR2.
That same £2500 will buy you a VERY tidy 205 gti, R5, Williams etc.

At best, Trophy's are likely to hold their value more than other 182's, but that won't be measurable for at least another 10 years.

Look at it this way...

If you want to buy a car to do less than 500 dry miles a year in, and you want to go up in value or at least not lose money, buy a 70/80/90's Fast Ford.

If you want to buy a car and actually enjoy driving it, whilst it depreciates less than others in the range, buy a Trophy

I think trophy's will get an extra premium if they have the dampers etc. But what people forget is the £400-£600 bill every few years to get the sachs refurbished. Plus Clio sports are expensive to maintain properly compared to others so depends on how you view the money you put into maintenance v what the selling price will be. Id just find the best trophy or FF RB that's about when you purchase and let that make your choice for you.

I would love a trophy, but I love rb and personally think it is the best colour for the 182, call it biast if you will

But hold value, I think will take an age for it to tell, but a low mileage, low owner, standard trophy will still command a high price imo

The only Clio Williams for sale on PistonHeads atm is up for £5,955 and the only two (one is now sold) R5 GT Turbo's on there are going for £11,995 and £13,495.

I'd have loved a Trophy if they weren't Red...! The only Red car I'd own is a Ferrari! I bought an RB because it was THE stand out colour for me other than Liquid Yellow which are like rocking horse poo... From what I read the Trophy is epic with the dampers but so what, the cup packed 182's aren't exactly sloppy on the road.. A tidy Trophy will demand more obviously but we're not talking investments to any great degree, maybe in 10 years time if it's still mint but it is just a Clio after all...
