Found out last night 172's don't handle....

.....In the wet!

I was going around a left hand corner about 35-40 and all of a sudden the rear just let go.
It stepped out at about 35degree angle where i saw a big brickwall in front of me so i throw the steering in the opposite direction to get it back and it stepped out again, i'm now on the wrong side of the road, kerb looming. I throw the steering to the left again, big hedge, to the right, kerb on the other side of the road. A this point i clenched my arse cheeks and waited for the big bang as the kerb got closer, i dabbed the brakes, (ABS rattled like fook under my foot), to try and take sme speed off and so thier would be less damage and all of a sudden it straightend up and we both come out of unscathed,(thats me and the 172).This all lasted about 2seconds max but it was like slow motion, can remember every detail.
I shat my self to say the least Will be driving very carefull for the next few months after that one.

Be carefull out there! :race: < That was like me with the steering wheel trying to get it back. Few!!!!!

can anyone say: ''lift off over steer''??

didn't get chance to think about it, it just went. Maybe there could have been a fuel spillage of some kind because it didn't slide and then go it just lost grip.

Yeah, think i would checkin the damage out at this moment in time if it wasn't for the ABS.

Sh!t me up at the time, but now i've tried to replicate it (safely) so many times but to no avail lol

defo sounds like liftoff OS to be.glad your ok which is the main thing and you have learnt a lesson hopefully

  Clio Sport 182
I tend to have a play about in the wet (in controlled areas) to see how my car handles should I ever find myself in a bad situation I was very surprised at how quick the back end on the 182 spins once it lets go. I think that advanced driving techniques should be something all drivers are taught once they have passed their test. Just out of curiosity is anyone a member of the IAM??

  BMW M135i
Same thing happened to me on a roundabout, unfortuanately the bang did follow the slide and resulting spin. Still think to this day that if i'd buried the gas when it started fishtailing instead of panic lifting that it might have pulled out of it but hey ho didn't think of it at the time, still lesson learnt be careful in the wet.

Definetly ditto about the slow mo thing.

phil...yeah...i believe it would have went...very rapidly something like this..

Back end steps out...attempt at a correction...v6 meets wall!

The fact that the car straightened out itself, while you were pulling your ass-cheeks together, would indicate that the problem is not really the car, but something else... ;)

IMO, the clio handles just fine in the wet, it quite easy to feel when it starts sliping, the slide is usually very progressive and the chasis is very obidient when you react with opposite-lock...it can be somewhat twitchy sometimes, it does require a little bit more attention when driven in the wet...

I find the same for handling in the snow, last year I remember a topic where people whined how difficult it is to drive an RS in the snow, but all you need is a set of good tyres and it will fare better than 95% of all 2-wheel drive cars on out there...mind you, I give this opinion, despite considering myself to be a fairly average driver without any special skills...

The same thing happend to me not more than 10 minutes ago. Just been to put petrol in go round a bigish roundabout and the back end just slides away - luckily I put some opposite lock on and the car straightens itself out....couldnt of been doing more than 25mph!!! its a b*****d in the wet

  BMW M135i
I've since found that shite tyres on the back that don't like rain make a huge difference, its much better now its got F1s on all round.

I've got conti contact sports all round and they all have good tread. thinkin aboutit now i did lift off as the rear end was out at 35degrees, i think it was that big red brick wall that made me lift off. The oad wasn't very wide so there wasn't muh room to play in.

I bet vee's are b**ch. Was thinkin about having one at some point but ive never owned a rear wheel drive car and never had a car with that much power either so i don't think i will bother.

Are conti's a bad tyre in the wet?

As i sad earlier in the thread, it wasn't progressive, The rear went with no indication, thats what makes me think thier might have been a spillage.
Ive been driving 13 years and have allways had front wheel drive cars so it's nt like i'm inexperinced. Not sayin i'm an ace driver. It s***s ya when it happens no matter what experince you have.

i would lke to have watched it on cctv footage, bet it would be funny

to be honest they arent that bad, in the dry they are superb. although it probably is more predictable when the back end is going in a vee!

can anyone say: ''lift off over steer''??

can everyone say slow the f**k down, the roads are s**t this time of year, its unbelieveable how many accidents i saw last week due to people not knowing how to drive to the weather conditions

one to put down to expierence, most people have had similar in the wet at somepoint.

I see roundabouts get a mention. They are notoriously slippy as when buses and lorries change gear they dump some diesel out their exhausts.

pilot error, these cars handle fine thanks.

only time I've lost mine in the wet was when the tyres were practically on the legal limit - not advisable!

They handle just fine in the wet, but the grip's not too good at the back if you unbalance the car.

What happened to you sounds just like what happened to me here...

Only, that was all my fault. Rippled surface on the corner contributing to understeer, vehicle approaching, lift of the throttle + more steering lock and round it came.

Could it have been a manhole cover? Hit one of those on a corner when the car's loaded and it's like hitting a patch of ice.

  1998 BMW e46 323i
my old 320i was a handfull in the wet if the tyre treads were even approaching low.Brown trouser moments aplenty.

I think my 172 performs really well in the wet to be honest.

had lift-off os shortly after buying the car, was my fault though, was coming off a wet roundabout too fast and the tyres were over-inflated.

In short, 33f 31r, keep an eye on the tyre tread and go softly increasing your speed in the wet gradually you'll feel the limits as you go

i had this happen to me doing 40mph but i ended up bouncing off the hedge and writing my car off

Clio's are not the best handling cars tbh
They have a tendancy to bite you in the arse when your not expecting it

Mine let go turning right on the roundabout end of my road a few weeks ago. Its quite off camber so thats why.. do it most times when its wet now on purpose, its impossible to loose it

Could have been a manhole and the surface wasn't the best.
Yeah their was a vehicle approaching too. I guess i expected more after reading all the "twisties" storys on here.
Just going to take it easy now for a few month.
