GAME (over?)

I can see what DK is saying but I also understand your point. £1 billion turnover is to much to be ignored. Games business model clearly doesn't work. They'll be bought up and stripped down by another competitor with a better model. The assets will be stripped and they'll try to keep as much revenue as possible losing the loss making units.

just like my hero, Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman!

£1billion is a lot. But 1% of that would be £10million. To not be able to make even to make 1% is awful.

They must have been able to see this coming. The fact that a fair few people in this thread have said that there is multiple stores so close is clearly a big problem. Close all of those and sort the online prices vs shop prices and they'd do a lot better.

Bad management.

Yeah, I think bad management is a big factor. I used to have a Gamestation in my local town but then It got turned into a GAME even though they're both the same company and they used the same employees. They just decided it would be a good idea to make it purple and white instead of blue and black and shut the shop for 3 weeks so they could make no money as it's the only decent game shop for about 8 miles.

Was good for me though, I could look in the shop during lunch breaks, decide what games I wanted then go back to work and order them online for £5 - £10 less.....

12 months ago GMG shares were above 50p a share. Now they are 4.8, rising after a dip last month to 3.2p. Would be worth buying £500 worth and seeing where it goes!

In Southampton, there are 4 Games stores and a Gamestation within 5mins walk of each other.

All empty except one :S

Yea, it's crazy! West Quay is the only one I see busy nowadays. I didn't even realise there was one in Debenhams and East St. shopping centre place until a few months ago.

Debenhams went a little while back, and the East St. one is massively overstaffed!!

Haha never been in there to be honest.

I've only been in the W-Q one, and even then its pretty small, and I don't want to purchase something or i'll have to walk round with a GAME bag.

Okay. Bad example. But the point stands. You could sell something/anything at trade +1%. You'd make a tiny bit but never enough to cover all your outgoings. You'd make a massive amount in turnover but never enough to turn a profit. Like Game.

Ffs, I can see I'm banging my head against a brick wall here, but I'll give it one last go.

This is not game, game don't sell at a loss, they don't sell at just over cost, they sell at relatively high cost compared to other sellers, and the turnover shows they have sales, so it's not through a lack of sales or selling the product too low, it's simply they have way too high costs!

Reducee those costs (sell majority of stores and cut down to one brand and one website) and the net income happens. Their gross profit is fine, it's the opex that's killing them.

i assume game is not a franchise and people are just buying shops here there and everywhere because if so that is funny.

Just used my Game Reward Points to buy Xbox Live Points as you get the code instantly. I didn't want to risk buying a game and having them close down before dispatching it.

They're having a pretty big pre-owned clear out at the moment, some pretty good deals in store (most of the good stuff is sold out online), e.g....

Assassins Creed II: £3.98
Fallout: New Vegas: £4.98
F1 2010: £3.98
Forza 3: £1.98
FIFA 11: £0.98
Mass Effect 2: £5.98

Have to feel sorry for Game group, i worked there nearly 14years ago when they first opened in our local town.

However i managed to last just 3 months in the job as the manager was just about the biggest bell end ive ever met in my life. Ah the delight in telling him where to stick his job just after i got paid for Christmas!

I really dont know how they survived this long as they were always much too expensive usually £5 to £10 a game. You have to wonder how a business specialising in such a mainstream industry these days can be such a royal **** up in this day and age.

Feel sorry for them? No chance.

They didn't adapt to the market and just assumed they'd be fine selling their products at RRP even when the products are old and other companies had up to 50% off.

I bought a PSP Go for £50 from Gamestation today. At that price it is hopefully worth having a look at!

Not sure what all the fuss is about regards stock. Two stores in Kingston and both have plenty of stock and hardly any decent deals.

Managed to pick up bioshock and bioshock 2 for £5 each which ain't bad I guess.

someone will buy em, either game or gamestation will all shut down, and any extra shops will shut too, they have way way too many shops, and hopefully they will start to compete better with supermarkets/online

Doesn't look good at all. Now up for sale. Shares dropped belopw 1p each!

Troubled UK retailer Game Group has put itself up for sale in a bid to avoid administration, according to reports. The Sunday Times (via Reuters) reports that the UK's largest specialist videogame retailer is seeking a buyer in a bid to raise cash to pay its quarterly rent bill, which is due in two weeks.
Sources told the paper that Rothschild had been appointed to find a buyer, but recognised that completing a sale in just two weeks "could be a problem," and Deloitte has been lined up to handle insolvency should Game enter administration - a real possibility if it fails to meet its rent. GameStop, the US retailer which has been widely linked with a takeover and has no debt, has reportedlyexpressed an interest in Game's stores in Spain and Portugal, but not its 600-store UK operation.
Game has been in broadly positive discussions with its lenders, but its recent bid to negotiate more favourable terms with suppliers met with different results. It has not been able to stock new releases from Nintendo, Capcom, Ubisoft and, most troublingly, Electronic Arts in recent weeks following the loss of its credit insurance in early February.
In a statement issued this morning, Game Group said: "Further to Game's announcement of February 29 and recent press speculation, the Group confirms that it remains in discussions with its suppliers and lenders in relation to terms of trade that allow the business to operate within the facility provided by its banking syndicate, and to meet its revised strategic plan.
"While these discussions are ongoing, it has not been possible to source new products from a number of suppliers.
"The board of Game is working actively to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. This includes ongoing discussions with suppliers, seeking access to the original facility or alternative sources of funding, and reviewing the position of all of its assets in the UK and international territories.
"It is uncertain whether any of the solutions currently being explored by the board will be successful or will result in any value being attributed to the shares of the company."
Game's share price, which was 296.75p in May 2008 and 60p this time last year, ended Friday trading priced at just 3.51p. Since markets have opened this morning Game stock has plunged below a penny, priced at the time of writing at just 0.83p.

I bought a preowned xbox from Game about a week or so ago.. and if they go down, then my 12 month warranty would be up in the air.. what do u think i should do?

pop into my local Game and see my options??

The warranty is direct with GAME (i.e. they don't use a third party), if they disappear you don't stand a chance to be honest (you will be very near the bottom of an extremely long list of creditors, that will also include anyone with vouchers etc). They offered me a 2 year warranty when I bought a pre-owned PS3 on Saturday, that's when I asked who the warranty was with. It was cheap enough for me not to worry too much though, worst case scenario I have to buy another.
