Garage can kiss my arse

  Inferno 182 & Saxo
Had a garage replace my cv boot in the offside, outer one. Got it home and the dickhead who worked on it has ripped my ball joint gaitor. Luckily I've got a spare one here but how can people be so ham fisted when they have a ramp? Also he must have pulled the shaft out as gearbox oil is everywhere so I need to refill it, luckily I've got 5l of total 75w80. Ho hum - is it worth me moaning in the morning? I've got pictures etc

I know I should have gone to BTM but the end of the day it's a job I could easily do myself I was just being lazy as its hot. How the f**k these guys stay employed I've no idea, I've fixed it with hand tools and it's perfect these guys had a ramp and the full works. Imagine these bellends doing your cambelt!

Just drained the box oil - 1 litre down on normal levels, they didn't even tell me theyd lost any oil. Might have to go set fire to this place bunch of f***s

i would get on to them first thing, on the other hand when you can't be arsed to do it yourself pop it into TCR in wednesbury not to far from you either;)

90% of garages are fuckwits.

Use the specialists on the forum or someone you know and can trust.

Yeah thats it, I just thought "nah CV boot aint rocket science any monkey can do that". Whole point of them doing it so was so I wasnt willing to get too oily, I'll make a note of that TCR place mate thanks, couldnt believe it when I looked underneath to inspect the work - he'd obviously had the disc off too as the securing screws were half hanging out. I mean if something is your day job and thats your bread and butter do it f**king correctly and do it tidily!

Id used this place before to fit tyres and they were cheap and spot on, clearly the monkeys were out today

Are you sure they did all this stuff? The gearbox could be leaking oil a bit thus the levels are down over time, the other ball joint boot could have been damaged already and you didnt notice. I dont see how he could accidently pull out the driveshaft out of the gearbox as its held in with a ring clamp with 3 screws (and its a wun wheel ont he other side), he would have had to rip the gaitor on that boot to leak oil.

100% I only checked the gaitors this morning AND last night as I'm anal about it. If you pull the shaft out of the box, on the nearside it doesnt come all the way out due the big screwed on gaitor but can slide out of its seal on the small end enough for it to gush oil if the driveshaft is pointing down making the seal into a funnel for the oil - I know this as I did it myself about a month back. I know the gearbox was full as it hasnt been depositing oil and I filled it up, also probably about a month ago. The underside was clean this morning and now the under tray is oil soaked. Maybe I'm an anal b*****d but I knew of the ripped CV gaitor for a week and have been checking the underside pretty much every night for that week, no way was the car as oily as it is now as I went to town with brake cleaner last time wiping it all off

The inner gaitor stays in place and the shaft pulls out of it, doesn't take much to do that to be fair, not that it makes it acceptable.

ah right. these must be different to the ones I have seen before then. On the ones I replaced, the boot is attached with a ring clamp to a bearing on the shaft and as such cant move on the shaft. you can pull it as much as you like (upto a certain force) and it dosnt move possision on the shaft.

Exactly, its not much but when it pops out it makes a right old mess. Least they could have done is said it'll need some more gearbox oil, good job I didnt thrash the car on the way home and checked it asap

Its that clip, behind the rubber/plastic donut halfway along that shaft above. Shaft can pull out slightly and leak as that black donut and part of the shaft just sit inside the small end of the gaitor. I'd jubliee clipped it but obviously he still wrenched it out

My last MOT, they had the cheek to fail it on a missing CV clip (which me and Rob fitted the night before), fair enough £2.30 clip, retest free, job done...

However I got home and there was CV grease everywhere and the clip he'd put on what lose and hadn't been crimped! Little things like that p*ss me off too!

Yeah I'm going to ask for a part refund for the following: cable ties used, oil loss, screws not tight, wrecked gaitors not even anything to do with the job. I dont think thats an unfair request to get some money back, even if its only for my time. Only thing he did right was put grease on the joint and re-used my old big jubilee clip on the new CV gaitor

No way he could of lost gearbox oil on the offside as you can take the shaft right off without losing the oil.

I just had the plastic under tray off and the plastic cover on the foam is ripped, thus making one weighty oily sponge. Gunk and a hose sorted that so now I'll know if I get any leaks, and not just residual oil lurking on the tray.
