Help me save my little pride and joy

Hi guys,
Hers a good un for you. Got a 1.4rt auto 1994 and the thing went in the local garage for an MOT but hasn't come out. The owner who is a friend of mine (so I dont think he is pulling my chain) can't get the thing to move.
We drove it there OK but since then whatever gear is selected, no motion occurs. We have tried renewinfg both ECUs and checked oil and cant find fault
Is it a scrap job or can someone help me save a fantastic little motor. My husband says its not worth spending any more money on it but I would be sad to see it go.

So please help.

Does the engine start?

Yes edde the engine starts up ok

Put a new box in, maybe even a manual. Is the fault light coming on, on the dash?

No lights coming up on the dashboard. Thoughts that it may be the gearbox defective are worrying. No other ideas?

Check the cv joints etc. If everything looks ok then its likely to be the box im afraid. The autos dont last as long as manuals
