how to tell if your engine mount is fooked.

  260% JCW
Just wanted to know if there was a quick gauge to tell if the big engine mount near the cam pulleys if fooked.

I can grab hold of my engine and rock it slighty, should there be no play when moving by hand? Also some crap started to appear on top of the mount, looks like rubber swarf???

Thanks guys

get someone to sit in it with the handbrake on and try pulling away and watch the engine mount making sure there is no excessive movement (stand at the side btw)

it does have some movement in them , this is okay . the swarf may be telling the mount is on its way out.

When i changed mine for new ones the engine could still be moved by hand lets say 1cm in each direction.

You'll know when mounts need changing when the ride worsens ; more play in the stick, sloppy engine-response on acceleration + coming into/out of curves etc.
