Why would a subwoofer need to be re-coned ? My friend bought a second hand Kicker square solo-baric 15" and when it came to fitting (by a shop) they said it didnt work - the coils were fine but it needed re-coning

What does this mean? He was quoted £150 to recone it too!

Re-coning is basically putting a new cone in it. It could either be that the surround has worn out or ripped or the cone itself is damaged. Some SPL subs coming out now are modular so you can do the reconing yourself in about 10 minutes. The Kicker squares normally have to be sent back to the US though unfortunately which is why it costs so much.

Well if it didnt stop it alltogether from working it would sound mighty crap !!

normally if they are recommending reconing then it is pretty knackered. Either the cone has distorted so the coils rub when it moves or the cone itself has split resulting in terrible flapping noises.
