  dan's cast offs.
the guy we use tacks the box for it to stand on then tacks the whole cage together then knocks the boxes out, drops the cage down, welds it up and then lifts back up and sorts the mountings then.

you should see how close to the shell he gets them

Ah I thought so! That's the same one I had in my mk2 as well. Good cage choice

Yay or nay? Used some pvc piping as template, I think in this position I can weld all around nice and clean.

i'd say the bar is overkill, also if you did want it i'd get it on the main hoop not where you've got it at the mo.

Yeah that's the problem, I would like it on the main hoop but it's too close to bPilar to weld around it.
I am not thinking just for safety, it's already safe enough the cage bit also for rigidity of the chassis. This will link rear struts to Center of the car.

  dan's cast offs.
they're already on the diagonal, all you'll really be doing is adding extra weight.

on your rear loom if you split the fuel pump and sender wiring and run that over on it's own you can run the wiring for the lights along the drivers side and then across the rear to the passengers side lights, keeps 90% of it out of sight then. if you do it though you'll need to run an earth for the pump.

Yeah you not wrong about the weight! Trying to make it as light as possible! So you think this bars are overkill and unnecessary?
Nice tip regarding the loom! Cheers. Will think about it. Might be easier this way.

I wouldn't bother with it personally. There's more advantage to having the cage picking up where the rear axle mounting bolts are. The more weight you put in the rear, whilst it is the enemy, will also help when it comes to corner weighting.......

SEPTEMBER 2017

This weekend has been quite productive.

First thing I did was weld in new seat rails. This are 25mm CDS tubes with M8 captive nut brackets by Motamec.
Fairly easy job but time consuming.
6f48f9ba21a9b41b67bab34f136f885f.jpg

Second on my to do list was to relocate PMS shifter closer to the driver. Unfortunately me being 6'4" and sitting quite back, reaching for the 1st and 3rd wasn't gonna cut it.
After a few tests, this is the best solution I could think of.
Cut out few inches from transmission tunnel, and make new plate to hold shifter that can be welded lower down.

Also extend the shifter shaft pin thingy (no idea what you call it :)

Fit it all together and woalaaa it sits 2 inches back. Almost inline with steering wheel. Happy with that.!

Welded passenger side rails as well
b05508f8a1b4fe681c65d1114a944c06.jpg

And finally fitted the fibreglass door(s)
Made a little beaker to go on the inside to spread the load.

Do you like welding by any chance?

lol I love it! Was just talking about it to my mate haha. Buying a Mig was best investment ever! Done a tiny bit of stick welding before but MIG is just Awsome! Only had it for a few weeks so lots to learn!

I'm just jealous! Your welding looks really good for only a few weeks practice I've done stick, mig and tig in the past but nothing serious. Are you using a shielding gas or gasless?

Thanks mate :) watched enough YouTube videos on welding ha ha. Yes using argon mix 5% CO2.

  dan's cast offs.
If you've only been using a mug for a couple of weeks you need to get yourself a tig and learn to use that, you're obviously a bit of a natural to it.

Few more updates from this week/weekend.
New corbeau seat got delivered. BUT! Stupid me made rails for the old seat which was XL. This one is standard.. catch my drift? So new rails had to be cut off and new OPM bolted rails on order [emoji850]and yes I have tried reposition/modify the existing but I guess my welding skills are better than I though. No way to remove with out damaging..

Next job was to remove my rear beam and get the new one fitted witch I bought from breakers while car was caged and reinforced with PMS plates. Again my stupidity or lack of knowledge made buy a one from 1.4 clio thinking he'll the must be all the same right? WRONG!
The inner torcion bar is different thickness!!
So I made a decision to swap them over.

so the swap was successful. And much easier than anticipated

think this should hold it [emoji4]
5ab713d995c5754dc678a1f20e07896c.jpg

Ordered all new fuel lines and brake lines to run on the inside so Also decided to drop the fuel tank. Clean it and check it over
691e2cc35000e0cd07f6d2fe33902962.jpg

Still on the quest to modify my existing cage, and after getting some very valuable advice from @NorthloopCup @bloke @Tomotek thank you guys! Decided that best solution would be to create 2 new mounting points and tie in rear beam mounting points to existing cage. So ordered 38mm CDS and some 3mm plate.
Here is my version of the spreader plates to witch tubes will weld on to. First template

Hopefully will get the tubes this week so I can finish it up.
Also modified and fitted boot latch handle button logo holder thingy to my fibre glass boot
69e122f43c23106488747776462b1d29.jpg
because I also fitted locking pins
e0e1172ea2f6fc8051bfa6bc3dd9d5b2.jpg

Original locking mechanism not needed. But button protrudes to much and I didnt want to cut the boot more than i needed so basically chopped all the unnecessary bits and epoxy it all together to make a blanking plate of sorts

have you used the new bolts straight through the plate to hold the rear beam brackets in place? presume you have but just double checking.

have fun with the loom, i've got two in now to do...happy happy joy joy :confounded::confounded:

So now it sits like this :) still need to give them a quick coat of hamerlite.

Also disassembled front suspension. Some parts will be sand blasted and painted. Ready for the next stage. Although I think maybe best to pull the engine out first. What's the consensus on the engine? Through the top or drop it down?

Nice work !

Can you reach the switch panel strapped into the seat ?

Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Just about. It's a bit of a stretch if I am honest. But I do have long reach being 6'4". But this is the closest it can physically be before gear stick starts hitting it.
But to reach to master and extinguisher you need to slightly loosen the shoulder straps. But I figured if you can't undo strap to reach you are out cold and won't be able to use them either way, That's why they have 2 on the outside.

i'd move them, if you can't reach them without touching harness then it's pointless having them there.

It says in the MSA blue book that you should be able to reach them when strapped into the car. Though I suspect many cars have them mounted where people can't reach them.
