Insurance increase for exhaust

  Golf GT & A4 Avant
Been thinking about changing to an aftermarket exhaust for quite some time now as it's starting to rattle and break up. After a neighbour got pulled by the police, they checked his insurance saying it was standard, they've impounded it to get an engineer to check for mods as it's a 5 turbo with fully coloured engine bay, and looking at points and fine as his insurance would be void.

Gave Privilege a call his morning to ask if there would be any extra to pay. I have no more than 3 to 4 months to run and they wanted an extra £30. so that works out to be an extra £90 - £120 a year for having an aftermarket exhaust. Would have been worse if I'd have said it would increase bhp.

Are they having a laugh? I'm 26, cars parked off the road, full protected NCB and no convictions. Has anyone else declared there exhaust and had to pay stupid amounts for it. Exhaust can fall off before I pay them extra for having a shiny exhaust.

i dont think its just the exhaust they are increasing it for

it's more likely to be an 'admin' fee for changing whats on your policy etc

I declare EVERYTHING (even gear knob changes etc) so they've got nothing to try to worm out of paying up. Most insurance (in my experience) won't charge more for things like an exhaust, wheels etc.

Well I phoned up and changed my address with no admin charge, and I asked them to break down the increase and it was all because of the exhaust, non of it was admin. And as I said this was just for 3 to 4 months, so would be more for the whole year

If you insurance is up in 3 /4 months, when you renew speak to Brentacre, They will give you a BHP Limit (EG 190bhp) and any Modifications you make within that limit, Air filter, exhaust, Re map, inlets, Roll Cage, Coil Overs etc can just be added to your insurance with no extra charge.

Brentacre = Ledgends!

I think it really depends on your company. When I was with swinton they charged me for everything. Even the alloy wheels that were actually factory fitted on same make of car just not my spec. I use A plan at the minute but they are not fantastically good for the clio as I swapped my type R scooby policy over but they would add exhaust, air filter etc for nothing. Not even admin fee.

I would always declare it though, I would just wait till re knewal and then get a modification friendly company. Worth baring in mind though that very few companys will actually pay you for the cost of the modifications should a claim occur.

I'm with Privelege at the moment and they threw £60 on my premium a few years back for my Prospeed, and I told them it isn't a bhp improvement system.

  172 Ph2. Mmm...
i told my insurance company to do one, they think its standard, got away with it for a whole year, guess im just lucky

"Has it increased the power of the vehicle"

"How do I know I've not put it on a rolling road before and after to check"

Actually worked for me once.

Also try "it's "X" years old I'm sure it's not making the 'from the factory' power anymore so any improvement isn't actually making it more powerful than from new"

I could use that one as had it RR it made 171, yet it's a 182?

I'm with Flux, declared everything before I took the policy and it worked out cheaper than a quote for the standard car.
