Is this right? Cambelt tensioner

  ph2 172
Hi guys, looking for some reassurance. I've just done my timing belt and it seems that to two points it says to aline get close to each other, then it runs out of travel on the cam and returns back to loose again. The pin is definitely in the slot on the back of it. I've got the two points as close as possible and tensioned the belt there. So should it look like this?

Genuine Renault parts used. Since spinning the engine over a few times the arrows have shifted a little bit to probably about 5mm apart, and if I try and tension them again it runs out of travel like before. Hoping it's just a variation in the manufacturing as I've seen some of the Allen bits pointing horizontal instead of the usual 12oclock position.

Just swapped the belt for my old one and the two points on the tensioner are moving the same as before. I'm guessing that the tensioner is faulty?

Tried an old tensioner too and it's doing the same so I'm just going to put the new stuff back on and hope for the best I guess

You've tensioned that up without undoing the inlet/exhaust pulley I'm assuming

Both pulleys were loose had about 3mm clearance from the nut/bolt.
Ive got the arrow and notch closer together now but the tab is still pointing at 1-2oclock. I've tried bolt old and new tensioners/belts and they have all done the same. I'm wondering if the head was skimmed at ALD when the head work was done now.

If I added my own tension to the belt the arrows would match up and the tab would be just after 12oclock.
On the longest run between crank pulley and the right hand roller I can get just over 1/8th to of a turn twist to give some idea of tension in the belt.

If I keep turning the tensioner trying to match the arrow and notch it just maxes out and goes back round loosing all tension. My best guess is that the belt is slightly too long.

Right bow its set to a little bit before my original picture with the same tension indicated on the marks.

Has the head been skimmed?

If so thats the reason as the belt will be a little bit longer now.

Edit. Yes the head would have been skimmed.

Set it so the Allen key bit is inline with the exhaust stud then rotate the belt over backwards (belt on loose pulleys) don't spin the engine backwards! Then see where it lines up

if it's still off I know a supplier who does an oversized steel upper idler to take out the slack

My head's been skimmed Fred, once I get it back I will probably have the same problem.

How long does it take to order?

I have just done my cambelt see my thread HERE

The old tensioner was like yours is now, also the timing was out but I expected that, they all seem to be unless they have been done by a specialist.

The new tensioner points straight up now.

Tension indicators are miles away Fred, how much of an issue is it having the tensioner sat where it is?

Mini182 it's sat exactly the same as yours was, but my timing looks okay, after several rotations of the engine the cam horse shoe and crank pin go in no problem.

  Many.
With the tensioner where it is, it will more than likely cause a penny in the jar rattle coming down the revs.

I personally think you won't have an issue. One of mine had a skimmed head (perhaps 1thou removed) and that had no issues on the timing belt.

My head had a mark in it that ALD had skimmed out.

How much was taken off i dont know.

I dont want to get you over to help me fit it and we have problems, ill give BTM a call and maybe order one just in case.

0.2mm, so theoretically increasing belt length by 0.4mm, which is nothing really. Not sure what it could be causing it to sit where it is. Seems I'm not the only person that's had a non vertical sitting tensioner though.

No the tensioner markings at the bottom always need to line up, but all the time it's pretty much bang on 12 o'clock. ( the 60m part )
