Looking at 182's, Mileage...

Right, I'm after a new car at the moment and have been looking at later/tidy 172's with generally quite low miles.

I've now got my eye on a 54 plate 182 with both cup packs, 1 owner, fsh etc etc with 52k on the clock.

I gather that the next service will be due at 60k and then the cambelt at 72ish. So... would you be tempted to get the newer car, a few more toys, nicer colour etc with above average miles, or stick with a slightly lower miled 172 with belts already done?

Also any other things to look out for with such mileage?

i always take mileage over spec, but if the car is in minty mint nick then mileage doesn't really matter imo

Not a massive difference between the 172 and the 182. TBH I prefered both my 172's over my 182. Pretty much the same pace, same interior, but better fuel economy (35mpg vs 32mpg). But, go on condition. My last 172 (still for sale!!), is in better condition than my Trophy, same mileage but the newer car!

id go for the 182.

Ive drove a 172 and it just didnt feel as pokey..

Ive got a 04 with 55k and cup packs btw, and was in the same situation as you :).

depending on how cheap these cars are, it may be worht hanging around for a low mileage 182 with 30-40k on the clock. I waited and got one with 35k on it, whilst cars in the same price bracket were mostly between 50-60k.

I'd disagree, in my experience, both my 172's were quicker than my 182. IMO 172's look better as well, think they could of positioned the exhausts much better on the 182's.

I'd go for the 182 with cup packs , they handle better than the 172's imo ;) Loads about so if the mileage is a concern leave it alone and look for another .

I think too much emphasis is put on mileage. I would say who has owned the vehicle and how they have driven it is more important. We have a 182 which has done 62k. Drives absolutely spot on. The first owner used it as her company car so all the miles were spent on the motorway, hence no stress on the engine. We bought it off her and use it as a second car. I would rather have a higher mileage looked after car than a lower mileage car which has been ragged to within an inch of its life. Also, the higher the mileage, the more likely that the mileage is genuine.

I've asked around a few 'we buy cars for cash' garages and they're not offering much. Going to try the local paper and then ebay if no takers. Just want it gone now.

Going to look at the 182 tomorrow :)

I have had 2 172's and a 182, A brand new 172, a 4 yr old 172, and a 1yr old 182 with cup packs, so pretty varied.

Of them all Iwould have to say out the box the 182 is the better car .

The only reason it really puts me off though is the fact that no one will buy a high miler lol and cant sell it on.

I'd always go for a lower mileage car . Granted you can't always guarantee it's been better looked after than a higher mileage car but the less miles it's done the better imo .

The 182 - it's the better car, as it's an evolved 172. Why settle for the poorer cousin :)

If its been looked after then your sorted!
I havent drove a 172 but there can be much diff, that said i didnt think there would be much diff between my old 182 and my Trophy but the Trophy kicks ass on the corners!

172 has a lot of advanatges over it its the one I'd go for

The only advantage I can think of is a spare wheel...? And I suppose about 2 mpg as well - but if you care about 2mpg (what's that, 15/20 miles a tank?) then a hot hatch isn't really for you hehe ;)

Interested to hear your thoughts though? Having never actually owned either I feel you're more qualified to comment than me?

Mileage shouldnt be the main thing you look at, it should be who's owned it imo. High mileage doesnt mean that its a bad car, just means its been run in. As long as its been serviced on time and looked after, the high mileage means nothing

1) The 172 has the spare wheel well for me thats importat I'd never not have a spare and I don't want it intruding into the limited boot space

2) The dampers are more reliable

3) No need to change the whells in order to make the brakes work well. Don't get me wrong 182's look great but there useless realy for cooling the brakes 15's are a better wheel but stock for stock the 172 has the better wheels.

4) Cheaper same milage for milage and age (there a fair few overlapping cars

5) If were including the Mk1 172 in the comparison then it has a better throttle respose simpler and has the smaller wheels and also better handling (athough thats subjective)

6) 172 do seem less problematic IMO.

7) I don't like the rear axhaust on the 182 (each to there own though)

Mpg depends on cars there no chnage realy between the two.

Just got to get it cheaper to pay for new clutch etc and other parts which can wear with age. but you usualy win in the long term.

Just got to remember also that if you do mega miles than a high milage car will become very cheap.

That all sounds fair enough I'd say cheers!
As to the OP I got my 172 on 58k and is on 62k now and flies:D at the min and it seems to be one of the so called "good ones" going by what I have read on here;) High millage shouldn't be a prob if well looked after imo

Thanks for various opinions guys, all good stuff.

Thinking about it, 52k is only 4k over average if we assume 12k per year, which in my opinion isnt really worth fussing over. Full renault/specialist service history present and all genuine parts have been used. New discs/pads all round at the end of January. 1 owner is a big bonus too i think.

A lot of the 172's i'd seen had 3/4 or even more owners. Not sure what conclusion that brings me to.

Will report back later :)

Also planning on keeping the car for a good while, so immediate resale value due to the mileage doesnt bother me.

Hope it's as tidy as it sounds

A lot of people reckon the 182 exhaust is quite chavvy, not sure if that bothers me at all.
