Looking at getting a 172

Right then!
Im a Vaux nut, ive just sold a 2litre 16v corsa 170bhp - awaits the sarky comments:dapprove:

The car was on the Cover of Julys Total Vauxhall Magazine, but rarely got driven only for shows really!

So im now after something thats quick out the box and handles better than the corsa. Was after astra coupe turbo - 200 bhp but the running costs and initial price scared me off really.

Its the mk2 clio, not the cup as i want some comforts. My brother has one and it goes well, an even match for what the corsa was!


So Tell me what i need to look out for?
What price an 02 plate with 40k should be?
common problems?
cost of servicing?
whens cambelt due?
how they perform?
whats the best mods for these?

My mate keeps trying to convince me to get a 2.0 Corsa/Nova he realy raves about them so there must be somehting good plus they do look like sleepers

£6.5~7k your looking best look on the autotrader though see what about high milage for me wouldn't put me off the 72k/5yr service includes cambelts so some maybe for sale around this point or least don't forget to thing about this when pricing a 60k example.

Check for leaking shock (no huge issue though)
Slipping clutch
Servicing is £140 or so from a good Renault place a dealer will want £180 or so.
There great fun cars though not bad on fuel tyres etc particulaly for there turn of speed. Plus there great fun being thrown about.
Mods depend what you want to do with the car for Hp the best seems to be the Angelworks manifold modification can give upto 13hp I think although depends on how bad your is. beyond that a decat si good as the stock ones quite restrictive then a cold air intake and panel filter. Then a remap but thats when its also worthwhile buying a car which needs its cambelt doing and you can get cams dropped in which with the other mods takes you around 200hp.

yep me being a vuax boy for the last 3 years since i past my test, i must say the c20xe engine used for the conversions is brillaint! In standard form mine used to eat williams alive!

Does anyone make stronger engine mounts as heard these are the main problem!

So do people reccomend them as a good buy, Im after one to keep for say 2 years maximum untill mr insurance will let me play with japanese stuff!

I'm guessing a Corsa B? You should try a Corsa with a C20 LET (Calibra Turbo engine)

yep im very familiar with the C20LET but the insurance company wouldnt touch me if i put one in the corsa!

I have driven a eds phase 2 corsa - 280bhp with a quaiffe atb and that was immense! :rasp:

Hum I'd be suprised at that although you can find bad Williams and some Williams are badged up fakes anyway.
Ktec sell a stiffer bottom mount though which is better.
There a good buyyes superb cars and spec for the money.

I bought my 02 plate 172 flame red with 11k on the clock a couple of months ago paid 7.4k all in.

I had a nice fat cage in my corsa and seeing the k-tec one makes me do little sex wee!
MM im thinking of a 172 to keep it standard but thats not going to last long i know!!

Whats the best wheels to go for
ie
17s - width, PCD, Offset, Tyre Profile
16s - same as above?

Also what suspension, not looking at coilovers etc really as had them on last car, along with koni adjustables but i need some comfort now, are there any springs on the market that help the clios handling rather than make it worse?
And also induction kits whats the best induction for the 172 without forking out huge amounts!
And lastly de badging - please say the badges dont have pins holding them in as well?
