Lumpy Idel and poor starting

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Hello all,

Just picked up the missus' Mk2 172. Car is great but sometimes doesn't want to start straight away. You need to cracnk it for longer than normal. Also it seem a little lumpy on tickover.

It idles arount 700rpm. Is this normal and if not is the idle speed adjustable?

Chees,

Matt.

My 172 Cup has a poor idle just at start up. Its all to do with Emissions.. However if its continuos eg after its warmed id have it looked into.

I think all 172's are lumpy on idle. Like jacko said, 97+ fuel (I use Optimax) makes it smoother and you get better mpg.

As for the starting I don't know. I've noticed I need to crank mine for longer if it hasn't been stopped for very long - i.e. when I go to fill it up and some days it starts easier than others, but I've never had any serious problems.

Sounds normal to me, mine's done that for the last 2 years...
Optimax helps with the idle...
Common faults are the coil pack..

  yep.
mine can be a b**ch to start if its been left for a short period like robertcl said. like nipping in the chippy or whatever.

^ yeah, it's like it gets flooded or something I recon.

I find I just have to remember to crank it for longer than usual otherwise it doesn't start and then I feel like a tit who can't even start his car properly !

I've had problems with this the last few days. I thought it was something to do with fitting a new battery but now I've read this I did put a tank of 95 ron in this week!
