@R3k1355 I haven't noticed any difference in mid range or peak power. With the timing 'out' the car performed well through the rev range and the dephaser kicked in when expected. The problem was on idle and pick-up from idle where it seems the high MAP reading was leading to incorrect fuelling.
Would appreciate that fella.@jinjur The problem sounds identical to mine. I'll have an ask around some of the racing fraternity I still know back home in Ireland to see who they might be able to recommend to do it for you.
So, I don't think I want to go back to my garage now............I have left it too long IMO.
On that, can anyone specifically recommend somewhere or someone in NI who can sort my timing and sort it right? Either that or someone in Scotland......could probably stretch to that ferry as it is generally reasonable.
The Liverpool boat is way more expensive and takes forever.

100% in the locking hole bud. Checked with timing marks on the flywheel.try with proper pin, you could easily be a degree or so out on the crank with a drill bit. also you sure it's in the locking hole not the balance drilling?
@jinjur The racing guys I know use Martin Tracey (Westward Engineering) in Enfield Co. Meath. He does tuning and engine building and they highly recommend him. You can reach him at http://www.westwardeng.com. Hope that works out OK.
@jinjur One more thing before I jump off... just noticed a guy with a racing 172 on FB called Leslie Graham who has photos and footage of himself at Kirkistown. It would be worthwhile making contact with him to find out who does his engine work.

Even after you've bought the tools/taken the time to do it, you'll still have a cheap car with everything sorted. All being well.Cheers Chris.
Not surprising. Just get a set on eBay, it'll be cheaper anyway.
They just said that they couldn't sell them to the general public.
I told him that I could buy them online from other Renault based sources but that I was hoping to keep it local and quick.............but no.......he said that they are for the workshop only.
