MarkCup's Fiesta ST

As said by philmots I think it's purely down to usable torque. What it gives you amplified by the gearbox ratios is enough to break traction depending on circumstances.

My run in first gear in the video, straight line, good surface, stayed hooked up all the way through. Throw in a less smooth surface, a slight curve etc. and even with the torque limited it'd still spin up.

I think they've got it just about right myself.

Well absolutely no info around on the torque limits of the IB6 box anyway so we'll never know. A quick search of Ford forums still shows the IB5 was no warhorse. Hope the IB6 has addressed those issues especially as the 1.0 ecoboost is happy with 200bhp. Surely your right foot is a torque limiter? Although I can't argue with Ford's work if it works as you say.

Found some very different answers on the Ford forums but this is not my thread. So my last word on the subject.

Infact I have never heard of an IB5 box needing anything other than a clutch! Ridiculous.

For God's sake. I suggest you don't type IB5 broken into Google then.

From Google

"Hi to all!

I have an MK6 Escort 1.8 16V 115hp with IB5 gearbox. My diff broke badly yesterday... And I got an MTX75 gearbox for free. So my question is will the MTX75 fit straight in, and if not, what mods will I need.? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!"

Markcup: Glad the fiesta ST is working out so well. Love the vids on YouTube. Your old ones helped me decide on the 172 Cup as a weekend/occasional track car!

The focus is torque limited too mark. Even then it manages to spin the front wheels if you're really aggressive so I don't mind it at all. Having said that I'm finding it more and more intrusive.

3rd turns the car into a ducking rocket though!

I got 120k from an ib5 with no problems. Warwick's opinion of a good gearbox is one that can handle more power than standard, even if it feels like stirring a bag of spanners. I personally don't care how much more power it can handle, I'd rather have a smooth, short gear change. Anyway that's enough about gearboxes.

the boost limit to keep torque down is purely for traction, Renault TCE engines have it too, its because of how quickly you can build boost in lower gears, it will break traction very easy, along with id imagine stress out driveshafts and the likes that excessive wheelspin does!

my 1.2 TCE twingo with the limiter removed only running 140hp and 155lbft would destroy its front tyres in the dry in first gear if you gave it full beans, and would spin them in 2nd if the road was anything bar perfect!

The fact is (for all those that clearly don't know a great deal about Ford gearboxes) that the iB5 wasn't the best (just like the JC5). However the only issues with them were on heavily abused high mileage ones with diff bearings and synchros (usually 2nd/3rd). Cars that would miraculously blow up several gearboxes were always treated to a replacement box that was equally as haggard as the one it was replacing.

If you had a fresh one they took power just fine so I have no doubt that the new STs iB6 will be fault free until the mileage starts to mount up a bit, and even then the rebuild bill won't be a lot and you can stick a decent diff in there. It certainly won't be an issue like the Mk3 Clio RS boxes.

The mk3 Clio boxes are made of cheese. 197/200. Countless owners. Would be me off sadly.

I have to admit this was another reason for me wanting to move away from my 200. Despite my mechanical sympathy and taking the time to always rev-match it's apparent that the life of the synchros is an absolute lottery. To many stories of four-figure sums to repair and replace for me!

LIf it was an N/A engine in the fiesta I wouldn't have brought it up. However it is a turbo engine and when warrantys run out people will start to push them further and further regardless of what power the car can put down. Yes the box in my 206 HDI has a rubbish shift (linkage rod type) but it meant I could re-map and then fill it full of band gear every weekend and even take on a few cheeky chavs that think my estate is a slug while full and not worry about the standard clutch, driveshafts or gearbox grenading while I'm 100 miles from home. The box in the fiesta is an IB6 not an IB5 and so may be a much improved version of the IB5. My experience of the smaller Ford boxes new and old was not great although admittedly I was using lsds and much sticker tyres at sprints although never more than 120ft/lbs torque!! and Ford themselves stuck the bigger MTX box in as soon as there was room. Peugeot and Citroen did the same with substituting the MA with BE as soon as there was room. If the IB5 is so awesome why is the 1.8tdci focus not running one with it's fire breathing 184lbs/ft lump. Annoyed I commented on this again!

Torque limiting is the future. Ferrari are using it as a way to replicate NA feel, with the inherent mpg benefits of modern turbos. If it helps the longevity of the car, I don't see a problem?

Nor do I. I was just trying to get to the bottom of wether the IB6 would be a limiting factor on the tunability of these cars later in their life. I know I'll be keeping an eye out for one when they can be had for a few grand! Will be a tough call between the old Clio 200 and one of these. Although going by the last fiesta ST prices against the Clio 2's prices I think I'll be stuck with the frenchies for a while yet.

Here's my latest addition to the ST, A G1WH dashboard camera. This will be trial fitted to the windscreen...once i'm happy it's set right and that it works well I'll mount it more permanently and get it properly wired in...and then I'll also get one for the rear.

For £47 delivered from China and including a 32 GB micro SD card it's incredible value. Having played about with it for only half an hour the mounts are GoPro quality, the camera body itself, not quite so, but then for me it's a fit and forget camera so that matters not.

I'll get a side by side comparison with my GoPro HD Hero 2 tomorrow... Quality from this shouldn't be far off at all.

Got it fitted this morning; I had to resort to the suction cup as the clamp designed for the mirror stalk won't fit the ST. I will butcher it mounting one of the smaller balls on a flat pad I can stick permanently to the windscreen to see if i can get it tucked away behind the mirror a little better.

I did use a black marker pen to colour in the infra red light on the front, quite happy with how discreet it is.

The power lead is just routed down to the lighter socket in the front for now, it's just long enough with 0 cms to spare.

Footage to follow.

Ordered an ST3 yesterday.
First car I've driven for some time that put a smile on my face like the Clio can each and every time and doesn't cost big £££.
12 weeks and counting.

100 miles in. Love love love it! Watched alot of videos online and its sounds much better in real life, inside and out! Sounds brilliant with the windows down tbh, and I've come from an R32!

Averaged 33mpg over the 100 miles, which is good considering the mix of driving. Plus its constantly rising, I reckon I'll average around 40 once it is run in and the honeymoon period is over.

I was lucky enough to have use of an ST2 for a week and it really is everything the Clio 1*2 was in its prime.
The game has moved on and in my opinion there is nothing like it for the £££ at the moment.

Not an ST but placed an order for a 1.0 ecoboost in Zetec S guise in midnight sky for the other half, quite looking forward to having a drive.

Great choice mate, I had another drive in one last week 125 version. So so much fun, stupidly so. Midnight sky is a special colour!

Got another 3 weeks to wait, still haven't been sent any documents by G2L yet though, might chase that up soon.
What does everyone think of the standard ride height? I've seen a group buy for H&R springs on FSTOC which is tempting, despite not even having the car.

they ask for proofs via email first, then 4 weeks later (for me) they email you with about 8 PDFs to print out, half of them you have to sign and return in the post, from then your cooling off period starts
