Mckay`s Ph2 Iceburg Silver 172

  Ph2 Iceburg 172
Hi all,

Decided to do a few track days this year so I sold my Project for the last four years
I love Bass feature
: http://www.ilovebass.co.uk/article/183/ray-damian-caddys/

So with the caddy gone I wanted something light and fast that could handle.
As it had to be used as a daily I wanted some comforts too.
So that left me with a list of French hot hatches,
1) Peugeot 106 gti/saxo vts
2) Peugeot 306 gti-6
3) Renault 172 cup or ff

Really wanted a mint end of line 306 gti-6 but just couldn't find one :( and want more power then a 106..

So after looking around here for a couple of months I decided on a 172cup.
There was one for sale on here and after talking to the previous and current owners it seemed like a gem.
So booked fights for me and my mate and off went to purchase a 172 cup.

When we arrived after been up from 3.30am and travelled 350 mile we were very disappointed...
This was suppose to be one of the best cups on the market and with a asking price of £2600 you would think it would have been..
There wasn't a straight panel on it, wheels all needed a refurb, around one of the 1/4 panels was rusting, oil leaks and a drive on the way out :mad:

So to the back up plan we went..

Went to view sbridgey`s iceburg silver 172 and after a bit of haggling off we headed with the 172 for Hollyhead for the boat back to Ireland.

It was the most economical road trip ever!!!
253_zps37559953.jpg

I had it at 48mpg before I took the pic :D

So got it home and took some snaps before I took it apart

It drove very well on the way home apart from the leaking exhaust which will be sorted.

So give it a good wash and into the garage it went while I went parts shopping.

A lot more up-dates to follow....

Took it into the garage and this is how it sat,

Was a good buy getting Si's. I've seen it run at numerous trackdays and its always gone well without missing a beat, so seems a strong engine. The Cup sounded overpriced!

Plans and work to date sounds good. Which tracks you planning on doing?

Its looking good so far, really glad its getting all the care it deserved and you are doing all the mods I had wanted to do but never got round to doing.

Keep up the good work, and as Cub. says the engine was definitely a strong one!

  Ph2 Iceburg 172
Ya seems a good strong engine alright.
As am based in Ireland, so mondello park is really the only decent track that's local to me, but the plan is to get it finished for a few trips to the ring over the next year.

Back on it`s wheels and looking a lot better

Back where it belongs!!!

how did you find it?

Engine wise It`s pulling like a train. My friend has a R56 mini cooper S jcw(210bhp) and there`s is nothing in it in a straight line which I was very surprised with.

It needs a full suspension refresh, the inner tie rods have seen better days and there a dodgy gearbox mount.
Overall it just felt a bit loose. Need some decent tyres as well, was running a set of yokohama s-drives which are a fairly good road tyre but out of there depth on the track.

So this week I ordered the following

Suspension: New genuine wishbones
Genuine inner tie rods
Lemforder track rod ends
Genuine arb and rack bushes
Full set of Cup dampers
Pure motor sport solid top mounts and strut brace package
White-line rear arb
20mm front spacers and 10mm rears
Vibra-technics engine and gear box mounts

Interior: Momo 300mm team wheel and boss
New set of Renault sport mats
Gear lever gaitor
Aluminium foot rest

Exterior: Megane 225 washer jets
Silvervision indicator bulbs
New no. plate light
Rear wiper blank

Should have all fitted next weekend and then off for a proper geo set-up which should leave it as good as new :D

Also thinking of a set of speedline 2118`s with ado8`s and sell on the turins but not sure if it will pull off 15`s on cooksport springs??

Just waiting on the rest of the parts for the suspension refresh from Colin in wests, and then get it all fitted at the weekend.
Should be like a new car.

Car looks cracking mate!

Have you got any pics of the momo wheel fitted? Also where did you purchase it from and how much was it?

Also im looking at getting the cooksport springs? Im currently on coilovers with 2118's but have just got some standard shocks and i'll purchase the springs next month. Theres a few pics on here with the setup fitted and it doesnt look that bad tbh.

Thanks buddy, Haven't got the momo wheel fitted yet as I have to mot it first with the original wheel.
I bought it off a member on here so got a bargain really compared to the price of a new one.

Just got all the new suspension parts fitted at the weekend and all I can say is wow.... Its a new car
Handles amazing and that's without the geo being sorted out and running on rubbish tyres.

Have sold the turins and have a set of new 2118`s coming wrapped in ad08`s when ever yokohama get them back in stock, so I will update the tread with proper pictures when the arrive.

The cars looking really good, I always was tempted by a suspension refresh as I had abused it quite a lot :quiet:

Glad its handling better on it, and looking forward to seeing the 2118's fitted, should have bought Federal RSR's for them though ;)

The difference in handling is night and day, its just awesome. And when I get the geo done it can only be better
2118`s should look good as long as the cooksport springs are low enough for it to work other wise coilovers it is.

A few of my mates run ad08`s and seem happy with as a all-round track ready tire.

Try and get the geo pretty close to what it had before, maybe a little more toe out up to 10 mins.

I found that spot on, along with the -2.4ish degrees of camber.

Was thinking around that alright for the track, but I don't think I'll run 10 mins of toe for day to day driving as it will kill the tyres!!!
This old car of yours is costing me a fortune :p

It's just 'cos you're much more of a perfectionist than me!

I just drove it until something broke.
