Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project
Made a start over the past few days with the tube. Im aiming to get the screen out, all bars profiled and ready to do one lot of welding on everything within the next few weeks at the latest.
As said a few days ago I picked up the additional CDS, the bulk of it went off to Whiteley at the weekend as you may have seen in his thread. The list of cage additions/modifications is currently:
- Remove Lower Door Bars and Replace with an
X
- Horizontal Bar Behind Seats
(Welded at the same height as the lower door bar and lower rear stays).
- Remove Current Seat Bars and Replace with 45mm Tube inc Brackets for Mounting Sidemounts To.
- Extend Cage
(From the upper door bar joint) through to the Front Turrets/Struts.
- Diagonal Bar from the Turret/Strut Bar
(Back into the car to join at the same height as the joint for the lower door bar)
So I've been moving forward with the door bars over the past few days. The length of the full door bar is 44", and I wanted the joint in the middle...so obviously the 'crossover' had to be at 22".
Chopped two 23" lengths off so I had enough to play with...
Then spent a bit of time profiling the ends, and after having done this once before it didnt take too long...
I did those in the dark so I was pretty sure that they would need trimming/adjusting so they both sat properly on the bar. The short lower door bars had to be removed to be able to do this though...

The remaining metal/weld still needs to be tidied up properly but Il wait until I have the proper sanding tools/disks to do it, not in the way now anyway. The top one wasnt too far off to start with...
Then tried the lower one...
As you can see its not far off at all, took a bit of adjusting to get it to that, and im still not 100% happy with it, the lower bars angle is ever so slightly off, lol. The lower one needs a tiny bit more adjusting but not much, will get there.
Ive nearly finished the bar behind the seats too, but needs finishing off. Will update when I've got that and some more done.
Also got a few other bits off Whiteley when he came down the other day, a new Thermostat Housing for one. As my current one has a hole drilled with the Mk1 Coolant Temprature Sensor fitted, which we now know is no longer required so I wanted to get rid of it to tidy it up a bit!
And a set of Gaz Adjustable Rear Shocks, as my current ones are not adjustable. At least it will give me something to play with over this year. Ive sent them off to Gaz for a new set of seals and refurb (which was suprisingly cheap), so I should have them back sometime in the next few weeks.
More soon!
