I'm off out the door now, i'll get my mate to do it from his fancy phone with the tinternet on it. Theses younguns got it made I tell thee.

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Yeah, I rekon Yozzas will go to 400 or so though. Im still pretty much certain I can get something with tax + mot (to last til feb/march) for £200 or less, seen quite a few go on ebay (106 1.1s etc) for that and less!

Will just have to keep an eye out!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Edit. WTF, where did your post just go ben?! LOL.

Was going to say, dont fancy a clutch change on one of those ;)

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

auction? Could be a good lol

Ones ive been to in the past all start at like £500 minimum, I need to go to one that has no-reserve really. Il probably end up getting something from an auction then the door fall off 10 miles down the road knowing my luck!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Last year I picked up a 1995 MK1 Clio RT to run me about for 3 months....

52k

FSH

5 months tax

3 months MOT

2 lady owners

not a hint of rust, the car was totally sound mechanically wise aswell (literally like the car was in a time warp!)

I paid £220

She even washed it before I picked it up haha!

anyway, I spent £35 servicing it (oil, filters, coolant and cleaned up all the brakes)

It easily did 300 miles to £30 of fuel

Come to Radcliffe, plenty go through at around £200ish.

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Funny you say that, there is a Grey Mk1 1.2 at Radcliffe auctions, saw it on autotrader for £450, but also listed on their stock list for auction? Didnt understand that....

Also, seems none of their cars have tax from their website?

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

My Sparco Corsa's went to their new home this morning...hope you get some good use out of them Jams!

Anyway, this afternoon headed over to Chris's (480bhp) and picked up the replacements. One of them is still in the wrapping as it came from Tweeks back in May :)

Also just thought id throw up a few pictures of the car as it is, interior wise. Quite a state after this years usage...

Basically as soon as its off the road, the first job is going to be quite a bit of welding. Just going to get the engine out, all the panels off along with the doors and tailgate.

Then will pop the windscreen out, and get screen gussets welded in. The car has developed an annoying creak (rollcage and chassis) at certain times, hopefully this will improve it.

Going to cut the seat mounting/bars out of the floor, and re-do all four again. Want them slightly further forward, and want spend some more time getting them properly level. The passenger seat leaning slightly one way has p*ssed me off this year!

Also going to remove the lower door bars (short ones), and make the door bars into a proper full 'X' with some new tube. Will probably put gussets on those too in the middle to make it look a bit cleaner. The door bars will come upto the same 'joint' as the bulkhead bar hopefully.

The last job with regards to the rollcage will possibly be running it through to the front struts. Im going to have a proper look at it but going through onto the strut and then triangulating down to the floor of the cage should not be hard really.

Last bits of welding will be patching up some of the holes on the floor where there are usually grommets (particually the front footwells) and any other bits I can find that need doing. Hopefully after this the car will not need to be touched with a welder for a while, and should be how I want it!

With the car then being a bare shell, il be properly painting the interior. More on that when I get to it.

More soon!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Not myself no (yet). Something I need to learn really, but in no major rush to really.

Lad I know just round the corner has quite a big MIG unit, literally takes him minutes per weld if everythings ready, prepped and cut to fit.

Im just going to spend some time getting everything cut, shaped and ready to be just welded in, then get the shell to his and spend a day and just fire through it all. At least once all thats done I can get on with the rest and putting it back together for next year.

At least then I will know its all done and looks good, as I dont really want to use the most visable bits (door bars etc) for practice welding just yet lol!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

That sounds ideal! I've found it really rewarding learning MIG and I was pleased with how my subframe turned out. I regret not spending more on the welder tho. Going to try and upgrade and have a pop at my rusty sills and some panel work after christmas.

Liking the plans for the cage through to the strut tops. and those seats are beautiful!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Yeah, after having a look the other day passing it through to the struts shouldnt be too much of an issue... My bulkhead bar is near enough the correct height for the wiring hole on the passenger side.

This was due to be sacked off and welded up at the same time (as its getting rewired via different means), but its near enough perfect to give a good idea of how to pass it through. Putting a diagonal in to the floor is only a matter of a holesaw through the bottom of the scuttle area too really, so hopefully wont be too tricky!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

I made up some new seat crossmembers for my escort one evening this week......

And you can see the cage 'gusset' for my lower door bar...,i was going to have 'X' door bars but after cutting the tubes and tacking them, my 6'6 22 stone frame didnt fit through the hole that was left, so re-designed them lol.

And note to self.....,dont weld in your door bars before you have finished all the welding to the floor pan etc, makes it a right git!!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Yeah, will make sure the door bars are last to be welded!

Did you make your own gusset plates? Flaring tool to make the holes or something?

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

at the time i bought the cage gussets, but have since bought swaging tools etc so can now make my own

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Ah cool. A member of another forum that I'm on has offered to make me up the gussets for the doors/screen/main hoop for a lot less than Custom Cages charge (£25+VAT Per Pair!), so ive been making templates for him today...saves me messing round and having to buy the swaging tools I guess too!

Will be putting triangular ones on the door bars too as mentioned, but these come as a set size from him and just need cutting to shape :)

Also fitted one of the seats yesterday to see what it was like fitment wise, and so I could work out if the new rails need moving forwards when they are welded in, which ideally they do.

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Just thought id post this, as its now been decided that this is definitely not a winter car lol!

First proper frost last night really, by 8pm the inside and outside of my windscreen were frozen solid, along with the sunroof on the inside. The clocks were also misted on the inside and would not clear! Got the de-icer out and cleared the windscreen to drive home, got the windscreen clear although after half a mile down the road the ice had started to form again as I was driving, lol.

Come this morning the whole inside of the car was dripping, dashboard covered in water from it dripping off the inside of the windscreen, and tons of droplets on the inside of the sunroof...

Think its about time I stopped using it lol.
