mk2 172 air box question re. air feeds

Hi folks. I was just wondering something regarding the standard mk 172 airbox. I with only having the car a couple of weeks, I am just getting to know it! Anyways, I noticed on the airbox, there is a second air inlet below the top air feed that goes down behind the light. But this second inlet does not have an air feed pipe on. What is this second inlet for? And should it have an air feed pipe on? Thanks ppl!!

hmm ok cheers guys. guess i will get an air feed that lower inlet, and replace the pipe on the top one to get more air in from the front of the car!!. Thanks!

my second air inlet terminates just behind the headlight, the other drops down to just above the horn.

The secong air feed doesnt have to have a feed pipe on as it is where the air comes out so you get a circulation of air with in the air box, should have one on though

damn pikeys stealing my air feeds. lol :( okie dokes now i understand! One question tho, why would you want an air outlet for the air filter box? I knwo you say about circulation, but wouldnt you want max air flow with all air going through panel filter into the TB? explain plz! :D

There are indeed two feeds, one which takes air just behind the NS headlight and the other which takes air below the NS headlight unit .... but via the "mystery" vacuum operated valve (which is open most of the time). It would appear that Reno dont even know what this valve does. A few on here (including myself) have removed the valve with no ill effects to get a feed down to the front grill. In standard configuration, neither pipe is really drawing cool air from the front of the car. Im now running a 75mm feed from the lower front grill up to a custom K&N air box.

No you want the airbox to be sealed to stop all that nasty hot air from getting inside. Both holes should have a pipe. The only reason for removing it would be to make the induction note a bit meatier.

Incidently, the bottom interface on the "mystery" valve assembly is "female" as if another pipe section should be plugged in there. Im sure if you mated a similar diameter pipe to the bottom of the valve to underneath the car (pointing forwards), or to the bottom grill area you would push cold air into the standard air box when moving. Then, as George16v suggests any excess air pushed into the box would circulate through the bottom of the airbox and exit through the top pipe.

Flying Scotsman do you have any pics of your K&N custom box as I have had a K&N for a while and have only managed to bring an alloy pipe up from under the car, looking for ideas for more cold air

great cheers for the info. I am looking to get a panel filter v.soon so to begin with I wanted to maximise air flow into the box before I replace it. I havent taken the box assembly apart as yet, so only going from what I have seen, so it was just this second pipe that confused me a little that runs from behind the NS light, underneath the box, and connects to the rear of the box (as far as i can see!).

So basically, my idea was to connect an air feed to each inlet, then connect them to a larger air feed that runs down to the front of the car - behind the lower grill to pick up cooler air. Which is why i wanted to make sure that connecting an air feed to the bottom interface feed and wont cause probs! thanks again. :D

George16V, other people will probably cringe when I show these piccies yet again ..... but just for you!;) BTW, the one page website is a picture of the car when it was about 4 weeks old ... just to remind me what it looked like before mods (only mods then was blue painted calipers!).

siroldvolks, thats a sad picture mate (hope you got it all fixed), but shows the air duct setup brilliantly. There was no need to trash your motor especially for this forum thread though LOL;)
