You're quite the sexy man

Managed to find a Valeo unit for £163 on Autodoc
Autodoc do list some contenders...

But £163 looks a great price for a whole new one. Could repair one or both of the buggered ones.

Goodluck!

Yeah I'm gonna buy a new one and then repair the others, I'll make one good one from the 2 and then see what else I need

Gonna be picking your brains in the distant future

Having the bathroom ripped out next week and need a skip on the drive (yes an actual skip not the Renaults I own)

So with that I needed to move the Clio. The issue is the alternator was fried and the battery I stole from @leeds2592 was now dead. Below 6v dead so I'm guessing the Halfrauds batteries are just shite quality as it's not old and should at least hold some charge

Bunged the battery on the charger, at first it wasn't drawing any amps but after a few mins it climbed up to about 10A. With that I set about swapping the alternator

I managed to bag a 75A Refurb Bosch alternator on eBay in November for £65. A good result considering a proper Valeo/Genuine cup one is nearing £200 now

The box

The alternator, I doubt there's very much left of it that's actually Bosch🤣

Removing the old alternator, first job now the battery is gone. Take the battery cable off...

20230107_115441.jpg

Well I suppose it's off😑

Anyway, found another terminal on a spare loom I have in the garage, knocked out all the old copper and crimped it back on using my big crimper. This thing is a total beast

20230107_122542.jpg

20230107_122553.jpg

New alternator in, everything back together and ready to start. Gave everything a quick wiggle and a once over...

20230107_125854.jpg

Righto, it must have just gotten fatigued with me twatting the old copper out of it and snapped as soon as I put 10nm of torque into it😑

A quick trip to Screwfix for some new terminals, not f**king about reusing old ones anymore

20230107_142254.jpg

Cabling re-taped, routed nicely and reattached. This time the terminal didn't snap. Hooray, 4th time lucky eh

The alternator ain't the same as a 172 cup one, the connector for the signal wire is on the back nearest to the block instead of on the front

20230107_142702.jpg

With that done I slung the battery back on and it fired up first time. No errors and charging the battery to 13.5v just fine

The battery is on its last legs so I'll grab another just for peace of mind. But with the car now fired up I took it for a quick whizz round the block and fell in love again. Feels so good to drive and can't wait for more track days this year

What’s warranty on them batteries, I’ve still got receipt in my emails. If it’s a 5 year jobby, I’ll send you it and you can take it back to swap 😂

I’ve always found Halfrauds batteries to be decent. It’s one of the few things I’ll go there for these days.

I can't see it being in warranty tbh🤣

I quite like their hand tools too, they have a good warranty and they're honestly very good for the money

Pulled it out earlier to give it a good clean

The spastics core drilling the wall for the bathroom decided against using the hosepipe right next to them to stop dust going everywhere and covered the car

Really can't wait to get it on the road. Gonna tax it at the start of March, still need to get the gearbox stripped out and get a new seal knocked in

Clio taxed again. Replaced the drivers side window switch because the drivers window wouldn't come up unless you sat there flicking at the switch like an OnlyFans model with their bean

20230313_113346.jpg

Window now goes up. Took it for a good hour long drive earlier but there was quite a bit of traffic so didn't really get much opportunity to open the taps. It never fails to put a smile on my face though, it's not fast by modern standards but it's so asbo it just doesn't matter. Whilst on my outing I spotted another Monaco too which was a rare sight!

Gonna run it for this week because the Megane is annoying me still

Did you put more oil in it

Aye I've got Cadwell booked on the 1st June

Gonna try and get the box whipped out in the next few weeks so it can have a new seal banged in
It could even be leaking around the casing join tbf mate. The proper stuff for the casings is loctite 508, but I had a couple that despite being squeaky clean, leaked and had to come back to be resealed.

Needless to say I switched over to loctite rtv sealant and never had an issue again.

Strange how the changeover happened roughly at the same time as we stopped using it at work. 🤔

The 16mm socket size plunger that sits in the bottom of the box can leak as well mate. If it’s been dragged around the floor, that plunger takes one for the team and gets scuffed up - I’ve seen them leak there as a result of the cap being damaged and it allows the oil to pass through, but because of the airflow under the car, you can’t see a definitive area for the leak.

Box oil that came out was a bit black/brown and the plug had a bit of fuzz but nothing ridiculous. The inside of the box is spotless so the oil has deffo done it job of cleaning it

Took the 2118s off too, gonna get em powdercoated this week so shoved on a pair of turinis. I'm not 100% sold on them but I said that exact same thing about the 2118🤣

Gonna take the box to my mate next week and get him to have a gander. It shouldn't need bearings as it sounds perfect. Just a selector bush and seal I reckon. Took me about 2 hours to get it all out, the rest of it I was stood yacking and then had to have a 30 min break because laying on my back makes me feel sick for some weird reason🤣

So whilst the box was away I decided to give a lot of things a good clean down. Jetwashed the subframe, support plates and my undertray. They were all coated and caked in a nice thick layer of s**t and gearbox oil despite only doing a few thousand miles

20230502_125608.jpg

Give under the arches a spray down to get rid of the majority of crap. At some point I want to paint everything at some point

20230502_130234.jpg
20230502_130245.jpg

Replaced the bearings for the roll centre ball joint as the others were pretty crusty

20230503_164944.jpg

Then I looked at everything... Whilst it was off the car and thought "should I paint it..."

So this is where I started going a bit mental with the die grinder🤣

20230504_134445.jpg

I didn't go balls to the wall but enough to smarten everything up. I thought about getting everything blasted and dipped then powdercoated but it's a scabby Clio I use on track. I just painted everything with bedliner instead

20230504_154029.jpg

I bought a 3l heated ultrasonic cleaner this week, all the bolts were covered in grease and detritus so they got launched through it

20230512_140700.jpg
20230512_145601.jpg

They came up pretty good, all nice and degreased. Gave them all a wire wheel on the die grinder to get some of the crust and rust off

Subframe and lower arms back together. I'm still waiting on inner arb brackets to put the roll bar back on. Hopefully they arrive tomorrow

20230512_152319.jpg

Picked the box back up yesterday from my mate, 1 new seal and bush later. Fingers crossed it doesn't leak

Shoved the box back in after work today. Got everything back in on the top side apart from the Speedo drive. I did end up buying one of the PMS Speedo drive bungs but I've no idea how the f**k it fits🤣

Yellow paint marker this time round

20230515_160258.jpg

Jobs for this week

Anti-roll bar back on the subframe when new brackets arrive
Bung Speedo drive port on box
New rose joint ends on steering rack
Buy new drivers side driveshaft (or return fucked one)
Shifter rod back on and shifter
Subframe back on the car
Take 2118s for powdercoating

Drivers side shaft sent back under warranty, hopefully they honour it (again) and they send me a new one. Less than 5k miles and 11 months of use. I've never had an issue with any of the genuine Renault shafts, this is the 2nd shaftec one that the boot has just come out of the cup🙄

20230515_161835.jpg
IMG-20230515-WA0004.jpeg

Started building the subframe back up putting the rack on. I swapped all the nuts and bolts so that everything matches now

20230516_154429.jpg

Subframe back on. Raided the Renault parts bucket and swapped the front bolts so that they matched as well

20230517_182852.jpg

Passenger side is all buttoned up bar torquing the track rod end bolt, jacked it up and torqued the wishbone bushes

20230517_180517.jpg
20230517_180657.jpg

Gave everything else a spanner check and a paint mark, it seems a perverse putting a paint line on everything but it makes it way easier to see if there's been any movement. Plus it's methodical and I can mark anything I've just tightened and I know it's tight

Speedo sensor back in, I don't wanna destroy anything by shoving the PMS bung in there

20230517_182827.jpg

Gonna have to wait for a new drivers side shaft to materialise before doing the driver's side. Gonna try and get the shifter and the dogbone back on and leave it at the stage where I just need to put the driver's shaft in and button that side up. I started it up earlier and just used the clutch to make sure that there wasn't any funny business from the

Need to get it MOT'd and tracking done before the 1st as I'm booked on at Cadwell🙃

Just out of interest, how highly do you the rate the roll centre kit on your car? I've been looking at them from time to time to try to cure some of the wandering I get when blasting down bumpy/cambered road. I'm interested to see if the gains from curing the wandering offset the increased maintenance?

No point in asking our tubby friend he never has the car on the road to find out

I personally love the handling on my trophy with the northloopcup rcl kit on. Combined with the gripper diff its turn in and press the a pedal. Still wonders about a bit on the roads with toe out but thats par for the course.

Aye they can never be perfect

I find mine skips around on the back end a bit because there's no weight in it apart from the cage. Can't imagine what it would be like on coilovers 😂

Bought a new Borg & Beck driveshaft. Used this brand of stuff before and tbh it seems decent enough quality. I gave it a good rag about and the inner boot stayed on so it's already beating the fuckin shaftec cunting thing and it was less than half the price!

Needed the block chopped a bit

Before

20230519_145605.jpg

Chopped and rounded the edges with a flap disc

20230519_150645.jpg

Got my shifter back on, drivers side all buttoned back together and everything paint pen'd up

I've never had the arch liners out on this so was keen to see what was lurking. It wasn't as bad as I thought but there was definitely a few handfuls behind each arch liner

Gave it a good clean out, flushed out with some water, let it dry and gave everything a good spray with some Dynax

The screws were totally fucked

20230519_175452.jpg

Thankfully I've broken at least 1 Renault at work so have a nice bucket of bolts for spares🤣

20230519_175950.jpg

Picked out a nice clean set of interior screws

20230519_175948.jpg

I gave the chassis legs and the servo a good lathering in Dynax too because they were looking a bit scabby

The turinis look mint now it's back in the deck. Deffo need to get some better tyres, these are budgets (at best) and whilst they have lots of tread they're s**t🤣 Even at 30mph turning felt like the wheel was doing one thing and the tyres just wanted to continue doing their own thing
