My clio trophy megane turbo conversion almost there,at last!!!!!!

  Turbo Trophy Evo 8,
Hi,my first thread, its took 9 months trying to fit in with my work load and young family but it in the last stages, just waiting for a bespoke ecu from ktec and mapping session, not many turbo clios running the megane turbo unit so i'm looking forward to see the results,I have opted for this turbo as they have very little lag so that I have bags of torque at low rpm so mated up to a quaife helicoil diff it should pull out of the bends like snot of a chickens lip,its not been a straight forward conversion and I was told it couldn't be done but the guys at ktec have been fantastic, any info that they could help me with they went out off their way to help even what not to waste my money on even though it would have benefit them, very genuine people,I will keep the thread going on the results.

cheers Darren

Hi,as soon as its ready I will insert pics and power graph, hoping around 250 any more will be a bonus, then over winter forged rods pistons hybrid turbo and clutch to cope, then should see around 290 but its the low end torque I'm wanting

Hi,what pictures do you need? The car itself is a totally mint standard looking trophy, not even a stone chip dent mark as the car has only coversd 30k , you can' t even tell that there is an intercooler up front as it is all in matt black, the only indication is the exhaust, not even a dump valve as the megane turbo unit has a re circulating valve on the turbo, when the car is finished I will upload any pictures or information any one wants, thanks daz

Sounds interesting, so have you just fitted the turbo from a megane? Or have you gone the full hog with a complete r26 engine and gearbox?

As for the wilwoods I run the JamSport set up and it's awesome, but if your on such good terms with Ktec I'm sure they will sort you a set out.

Hi Stevie, its not been easy. I sourced a full R26 engine ecu etc with low miles, my initial plan was to install the whole engine with the meganes ecu but as my car is a trophy it has the traction/stability/cruise control and mechanical power steering but the ecu for the megane wouldn't be able to talk to any of these systems in my car, this is like talking german to a spanish person. If my car had been a clio 172 cup this has no electronic aides on it so would have worked. Also on the megane block there are no bolt holes to hold the power steering unit as the power steering is electronic. I nearly gave up on it but carried on as I had got so far. I took all the internals out of the megane engine and put them into the 182 engine, drilled a hole in the back of the block to an oil feed to the turbo, same with the oil drain from the turbo. Then the issue was with the turbo. I had to re position the outlet on the housing and have it turned 180 deg. I had my gearbox re built with a helicoil quiafe diff. The engine went straight in with no problems but when I had the bespoke front pipe made it was very close to my brake master cylinder. I wasn't happy about how near this was so I blocked off the original brake hose outlets and had them positioned on the other side of my master cylinder. I sourced a turbo blanket for the whole turbo unit and the downpipe which has eliminated any issues with heat. I used the whole cooling system from the megane including the water cooling for the turbo and the water oil cooler. My main concern on the whole of this build is reliability so no corners have been cut. Every part used has been a renault item or ktec. I use one of ktecs' map sensors for reading boost pressure and a boost controller to work the solenoid valve. I am now waiting for the ecu from ktec which is 4 weeks away. I'll post updates.

So have you simply fitted R26 internals into your trophy lump and kept the trophy cylinder head and inlet, or have you used te R26 internals and cylinderhead bolted it to your trophy block?

You could of just used the r26 block as theres laguna brackets which you can use to retain pas and ac, but obviously your passed that point now. Not sure why you kept the water/oil cooler as it's pretty naff. You'd be better off binning it and getting a mocal oil cooler especially if your looking to go for big power.

I helped AndyRG build a similar engine a year ago heres a link to his threads there might be something usefull in there for you.

  Trophy Turbo :)
Very nice project. I think your number 8 now......

We have 6 lads up here running this set up and weve helped a lad down brum too :)

As you may be aware we hadthos set up and runnngtwo years back!! :)

Look forward to seeing your car some time,

P.s the oem turbo is crap and if your running the oem ecu youll never get the full potential out of thecar with out spending a lot of money with the mappers

  Turbo Trophy Evo 8,
Hi Andy,I will be running ktecs gen90 ecu as it can control my traction control etc ,i'm still running vvt and the clio head inlet etc, during winter hybrid turbo forged internals, I don't want too much power as I don't want too upset the balance too much, I want the torque for more usable power in the rev range and wanted to keep the vvt as with the evo9 engine when it comes on boost it goes then when the vvt kicks in it goes again, thanks for the advice as I take it all in as there I know youve tried it all, cheers Daz

Ah be intresting too ser the megane 225 inlet manifold on the clio head.... How did you sort that one out??

Vvt is some thing id of liked but advancing the cams does the same thing, apart from its lumpy on idle.

Any ways glad too ser your gettig there, gen ecu from k tech is good but your now probably limited to who can or will map the car.

Whilst I can see how it could of been a cheap option by fitting the megane lump, I personally think you've wasted a lot of unessecary money fitting the internals. I would of sold the R26 and simply bought a log manifold and fitted a GT28 turbo then you would of only had to pull the engine apart once to fit the forged internals.

As for lusting after the torque associated with the megane turbo I don't expect the gearbox to last long, quaife diff or not
