Re: My mk1 track car blog

Looking good mate! How do the brake valves work then? Novice, lol.

basically it lets you adjust the amount of fluid pressure to the rear brakes, meaning depending on track conditions/tyre temp/tyre wear etc you can control amount of rear wheel braking

lets say im on track and its quite slick, meaning that the rear wheels are locking up under heavy braking, i can adjust the valve whilst on the move so that it stops them locking up

also means you can get the balance just right to minimise dive under heavy braking (thats the weight shifting forwards, making the car unbalanced and leading to the arse end wanting to step out when going into a corner)

theres alot more to it but im no racing driver

get that ECU number for me and I'll buy that and the loom off ya ;) - will help your funds lol

im there this weekend so i will deffo get it for you, pm me your tel number and i can text you it if you like?

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Ah right! I thought it was for front brakes aswell! Makes a little more sense now! I was thinking "Why would you want less brakes?" LOL!!!

Good project mate, hows the engine side of things coming on?

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
Re: My mk1 track car blog

well you can setup the bias valve any way you like, so you could have it altering the front brakes or each wheel individually, front left front right etc

engine is at a standstill as my electrician was busy last weekend, he has been working on the wiring at home all this week, getting various info so that he can sort out my new loom :D

next job for me is fit new rear pads, then take off all the front to rear brake pipes  and then re-route them through the bulkhead and into the car to plumb into the bias valve, then through the boot floor and into the goodridge flexis that sit on top of the rear beam:D

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Rear brakes is a good idea though, should work well on track! Don't ramp it up too much though or you'll go backwards throuh a tyre wall ;)

Can't wait to see it running. Love projects like this! Wish money grew on trees though, eh!

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right bit more done today, couldnt do anything yesterday as i was busy.

fit my rear pads, just bought some cheap omp ones for now, will upgrade if they are cack.

i borrowed a brake pipe flaring tool aswell so that i could sort out my in car bias valve, and also trim my front pipes that i had made too long and had to coil up.

so i started by removing the 2 front to rear pipes that i had run under the car, then re-routing them through the bulkhead like so

DSC00461.jpg

which run to this
DSC00460.jpg

DSC00458.jpg

im still waiting for my T piece joiners to arrive so cant connect it all up as yet

the single pipe then runs to this, mounted it just in front of the gear stick, easy enough to adjust, but not too close so that it can be knocked by accident

DSC00454.jpg

DSC00453.jpg

the pipe then runs under the seat subframe and up to another connection where it splits into 2 again

DSC00455.jpg

DSC00456.jpg

these then go through the boot floor and into the braided flexi's under the car

DSC00457.jpg

so once i get these T pieces that'll be the braking sorted, including:

standard valver calipers
brembo max discs
carbone lorraine pads
goodridge braided flexi's
all new brake pipes throughout and front to backs run inside car
Tilton 7 point in-car adjustable bias valve
standard rear discs
omp rear pads
Motul rbf600 brake fluid

should be ok for a few corners at least :clown: :approve:

Re: My mk1 track car blog

You going to put rubber gromets where they go through the floorpan?

yeh to stop them chafing (sp?) just need to find something the right size, also going to spray with waxoyl to prevent any future rusting on the boot floor

going to do the same where they come through the bulkhead, because ive got no arch liners you can see right through to the front wheel, might get a bit chilly for my passenger

Re: My mk1 track car blog

It is easier to put the grommets in first then push the greased pipes through them, than try to put them through after, but we all learn the hard way.Good luck with the project.

Brilliant to see some progress! Nice work on the brake pipes, looks like quite an involved job

i'll be able to get some that go over the unions, failing that i can cut one side and wrap them round the pipes, as long as they are protected they dont have to be air tight, car is going to be
noisy/cold enough as it is :)

and yeh i know about learning the hard way all too well, like today when having a lapse in concentration i flared a pipe without putting a union on first, done that plenty of times before now

cheers

cheers beanie :D

i just find making pipes fiddly, plus getting them to bend to the contours you want is a farce, and then i find they never look super neat, ah well at least its not something i have to do every day :D

Re: My mk1 track car blog

well normally i dont get to work on the clio at all during the week, but today was an exception, ive been on a course for work over the past 2 days, got a nice early finish today so went about fitting one of my seats and doing some odd jobs on the clio

so got the seat out of the packaging and fit the side mounts in the house, next thing i turn round and my apprentice technician is 'testing' them thoroughly

DSC00474.jpg

DSC00475.jpg

so after they had passed the rigorous testing i whacked them in the car, had them on the lowest settong at first, but as im of normal height* (* read short) i had to raise them up a bit

good god its actually resembling a car now! :clown:

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Looks great, im jealous :)

cheers bud :D

right everyone i need your input, i am thinking of going balls out and stickering up the track car

after seeing a post on here for a company selling the 197 cup race car decals, i am getting my brother to photoshop me them onto the valver

then i will put all the other stickers i have collected for various parts i have bought to add to the effect

what do you peeps think? good or bad?

Re: My mk1 track car blog

nah dont do it, keep it stealthy :D

fitted one of my seats last night too, can barely see over the steering wheel haha

yeh i like the stealth look, but ive always loved touring cars that are stickered up to high heaven, and although its not a race car, its as near as i can get (for now ;) )

what subfames you using?

my eye level wasnt over the steering wheel lmao, and although im getting a smaller wheel, it just didnt feel right, it still feels like im sat on the floor, but now i can see where im going!

and to think i was going to use ultra low subframes :quiet: glad i didnt!

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Im 6ft 2 and can just see over the dash. Im using cobra subframes with runners modified to fit the sparcos, I thoguht tit was going to be high as well with the runners, great seats for the money though!

would be interested to see some designs done on photoshop, I think you would to go all out like the cup racers rather than just a few stickers.

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Awesome read...

So i assume the seats measure up with Sparco side-mounts, and omp sub frames? Or have i read that wrong!

indeed mate :D

got sparco seats and sparco side mounts, then omp clio specific subframes

a little birdy told me sparco and omp products work together in other applications aswell :D which is nice

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Superb... in that case... where did you get the seats, mounts, and frames from? Not that I plan on copying it at all.. honest!

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
Re: My mk1 track car blog

lol

seats from jmcmotorsport, as long as your not in a hurry for them they are the cheapest i found, if you want them quickly pay a bit more lol

sidemounts are from rallynuts

frames are off ebay, shop called ybracing, but they are for a MK1 so just check that they do them for a mk2 :)

Re: My mk1 track car blog

JMC, same as me but dont count on them coming soon after you order them, took 2 months for mine... zzzzzz

Mk2 subframes are much more expensive for some reason :(

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right not a lot to report today, got my arb fitted with powerflex bushes and got my carbon door and qtr cards fitted (all bar the passeneger door which i am fitting 2moro) pics to come 2moro

big excitement came when i went to buy some decals off lad about 10mins away, drove down to his garage and layed out the decals, told him what i wanted and agreed to a price, all tip top :D

evo VII was parked in the garage along with another car under a cover.....to be fair i thought i recognised the splitter on the front bumper straight away, but didnt want to say anything for fear of being wrong

but then we got into conversation and i asked him what was under there, not only has this guy got an evo VII, but he's got a white escort cosworth running 400bhp, needless to say he uncovered it for me (and the gf who finds escort cossies pure sex!)

i was in car heaven!!! (and i'd only come to buy some stickers!!!)

he explained how much money he had put into the wee sexscort, and then went onto explain how he was going to the nurburgring in sept. i asked if he was taking the cossie, to which he laughed and said he was taking the lamborghini gallardo!!! not his gallardo mind, his brothers, who had just sold his business.

needless to say we had a giggle about earnings and such, and then i departed, to go home to a dinner cooked by the gf and 2 bottles of rose. yes im drunk, and yes its taken me about 10mins to correct al my spelling mistakes lol

pics 2moro :D

looks like its going to be another week wait :(

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right bit more done this weekend, i have decided that the cage is going to wait until the car is on the road, that way i can have my ideas put into practice by a very good welding company, you'll see what i mean when its done

so with that in mind i could start fitting the interior bits, so got to work on my carbon door/qtr cards

and i also finally got my arb fitted with powerflex bushes and fit my magnex (which was a task in itself to get the ktec centre section mated to the 172 cup decat, and then to the magnex backbox  )

Re: My mk1 track car blog

oooo

need to know how you've mated the exhaust sections up :D

pics please :D

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
Re: My mk1 track car blog

with difficulty and a bit of luck lol

basically the ktec centre section comes with an adjustable flange slotted into the end, what i did was take this out and turn it round, then weld it in place. the bit on the end of the flange that would normally slot into the centre section then slots into the 172 decat, bolts through the 2 flanges (with a bit of adjustment from the grinder lol) and tighten up, jobs a good un :D

i can take pics next weekend when its light to explain it better

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
Re: My mk1 track car blog

ok cool

my 16v exhaust is a straight through that includes the decat... that will be too long yeh?

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
Re: My mk1 track car blog

yeh, unless you make your own downpipe from angled sections like i was going to at first?

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
Re: My mk1 track car blog

I like the neatness of the cup downpipe

Its right at the bottom of my list of things to do though
