My New Clio 182

Hi all,

So I’m new to this forum, I just got a Clio 182 after having a mk2 golf. This is very different. As you can see I’ve got a few mods : air filter, miltek exhaust and uprated engine mounts.
Would love some advice on maintaining the car as it’s got 77k miles full service history and most done via Renault specialist. New cam belt and aux kit.
Questions I have:
Best tyres ?
Inside the cabin it rattles... ALOT. blue tac is placed where it rattle as it only happens at 3000rpm when I’m driving?
Best gear stick ?
Where do I get it tuned ?
Looking to increase power- but more keen on handing as I know that’s its strong point!

Anyway to all the 182 fans I understand why you preach them! She loves a British B road and feels VERY planted.

Welcome aboard, your car looks very tidy. Renault build quality wasn't their most revered trait so a few rattles are to be expected. Some padded tape behind the offensive panel might help. If you want to keep it maintained by a specialist that depends on where abouts you are, I'm sure someone can recommend a garage.
As for mods it looks like it's already lowered. Fresh cup shocks and decent springs are spot on for road driving and there's plenty of springs to choose from. Coilovers if you want to go low also available in plenty of flavours. For tyres Michelin pilot sport 3 are a good around choice, if you're going to avoid bad weather then yokohama AD08R are popular and won't kill you in bad weather as long as you're sensible. There's lots and lots of info about most things on here, just ask or try a search. 👍

If I was new to 1*2 ownership the first thing I'd do is preventative work. Check behind rear speakers for the beginnings of sill rust, remove and reseal the 2x black bungs on the boot shuts, check 3x scuttle drains aren't blocked. Heater box gasket is another, drying out a wet footwell in winter is no fun.

Dont bother chasing power, spend it on a suspension refresh!

As already said don't focus on increasing bhp as it just won't happen unless you throw bulk amounts of cash at it.

Focus on improving the brakes, suspension, tires. Those wheels weigh a ton you'll notice a huge difference going to a set of light weight 15's

Thanks for all this ! I will keep in mind the choices or tyres, I live in Gloucestershire so I will search for a specialist. The car is very clean to be fair I think I chose a good one. Padded tape will work ?
What kind of price am I looking at tyre wise ?

I was thinking about getting the 16 inch from the Clio trophy ? As they are still Renault to keep it authentic I don’t know if they’re really that much better. Also cost an arm and a leg

It certainly makes the car drive better, the normal struggle in lack of low down torque improves and cold starts smooth ect. It’s all dependent on mods and the strength of the engine ect. I would advise a live map from such as EFI I saw incredible results I have a freak engine lol

I too are new to Clio 182 ownership, Silver one like yours.

I've come from a DC5 Integra Type R and my last 4 cars have all been Honda so it's a bit different for me.

The cars I'd say are quite similar but chasing big power in a non-aspirated car will be expensive, so I echo what everyone else says and that is to concentrate on braking and handing. I actually think the standard Brakes on the Clio are fantastic, they have much better pedal feel than the Integra so unless you're doing track action I'd maybe only look at some fast road pads (Pagid, Hawk, Ferodo etc) and some good fluid.

The handing feels good on the Clio so far, I'm happy with mine and probably won't change the suspension. Maybe get some brand new Cup Shock absorbers in the future but I won't likely tinker with it. I've ruined multiple cars in the past by fitting uprated parts and they've made the cars worse. I can imagine the Renaultsport cars have received a lot of development from Renault Engineers so they're pretty good as they are.

Personally I'll likely fit a smaller steering wheel, and possibly some Mégane seats in the future along with lowered frames and possibly a Pure Motorsport Shifter and some better tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 3) and enjoy the car as it is.

I agree with the performance of the car it is very good standard, I like the idea of changing the wheel,seats and shifter but in terms of power a map is all I’ll do

Next will be to change a grumbling wheel bearing. Then tidy up the engine bay. I’m also removing the obnoxious induction kit and will be adding a cat back on the car. Before sorting out the wheels for a set of Turinis. They I have the standard parking dinks and dents as well as a bonnet replacement planned. My car already has the cup suspension and eibach springs? So it seems to handle like a dream as well as brembo discs and pads. I love the car and am doing the work with my little lad who at 9 is developing quite a little petrol head. It will be a labour of love, can’t see much point in searching for loads more power as it seems a very expensive task. But these things always have a way of changing.

Oh my the sticky plastics !!!! SUCH a pain, currently using spirit and plenty of patients... Do you recommend Turinis ?

I can’t recommend them as I have never owned a set. But they look great, are light weight and to my untrained eye look almost OEM. So that’s what I’m going for.

Turini's are oem. There's 2 different offsets as fitted to the 172 cup or 182 trophy.

Get your wheel bearings from here. Renault use SNR bearings . I had 2 fitted a few months ago and they're spot on.
