My Renault Clio 172 Phase 1

Yes your absolutely right Lewis, it was creased and I just couldn't live with it anymore, hence why I made the decision to get things moving today.

Yes the bonnet I currently have is aluminium but as you pointed out its now creased and beyond repair IMO. Aluminium is a funny material and creases are hard to rectify. It cost me £120 for the bonnet and £200 for the respray on it so I was gutted when I noticed the crease.

Danny offered before as I had been PM him, if I can get the body shop todo it I will use them otherwise I will ask Danny very nicely and see what he sais.

Do you know anyone local to us who would do it body shops etc

Tbh mate if TDF fitted them and damaged your bonnet in the process I'd be phoning them up and asking them to sort it..

  ITB 428 Ph1
I have been in contact with Matt and shown him the crease, however he said a gentle pull may sort it out if not back the pins off. I obviously tried this and it made no difference. Therefore I assume there's nothing anyone could do, Matt explained to me it's hard to get a neat finish with aero catches on an aluminium bonnet hence why I went with the pins, however I probably should have risked it as I wasn't happy with the pins either. Obviously steel bonnets there isn't an issue as there alot stronger.

DannyR is going to give me a price for him to install the aero catches I've just bought on another aluminium bonnet. Danny mentioned a while back about doing a installation thread on a Ali bonnet so this might be a good opportunity.

My engine management light keeps coming on and I've got to go back to TDF for Matt to map it out.

just read through this entire thread whilst at work. OOPS haha got to say its a very very interesting read and i agree with some of the above comments, this is in the top 3 of cleanest ph1's i have seen. and the power output is very impressive!! keep up the good work mate. you going to css?? would LOVE to see this car in the flesh as pictures dont do it justice!

Thanx for the kind comments Jack, im planning on going to CSS as the car is nearly complete. Just s couple of bits I would like to get done and it will be ready for its first meet.

Update

I decided its finally time to get the f1ns refurbed and get the 195/45/15 T1rs on. As I was weathered off from work today I had a chance to get the wheels off, tyres off and sent down to aero coat the powder coat specialists. I am going to get the f1ns done in a flat silver which is more or less the same colour as they are. I did like the look of the shadow chrome but I dont think it would work on little 15" wheels.

The car on axle stands

photo42.jpg

The rims before they went in, they are in okay condition but they laquer is beginning to peel and there are a couple of scuffs (previous owner)

photo41.jpg

I am trying to get a mechanical friend round to strip down my calipers so I can get them powder coated whilst the wheels are off and the cars on axle stands. This might be a good time to but and fit some Ferrodo front pads and fit my Brembo Groved High Carbon Front Disks. Obviously I will be cleaning the arches up over the next few days.

I have also organised to go up and see DannyR at some point to get him to fit the aero catches to my spare aluminium bonnet I have just recently purchased, however when i went in the bodyshop for a quote to respray my door moldings, the guy said he can rescue my aluminium bonnet ive got now and fit the aerocathes to it which was fantastic news. I just hope they can, I am going to have the aerocatches installed vetically as I think it will look better running along the bonnet lines. They are also going to spray the door mouldings at the same time next week once the cars back together.

UPDATE

As the car was on axle stands, it gave me the chance to clean the arches. I used my brush for my alloy wheels and my dodo juice shampoo in a warm bucket of water. I can not believe the amount of mud and dirt that came out of the arches. I can not recommend doing this job yourself enough if you get a chance. It allows you to remove all the build up and clean parts of the car that are usually inaccessible. I also sprayed treatment onto the coilovers, nuts and bolts to try and keep them in as good a condition as possible.

To my disbelief I found a 8mm spanner on the rear drivers side break caliper lol. I have no idea how long its been there.

photo46.jpg

The plans is to now get the break calipers removed front and back and get them powdercoated. They will need to be completely stripped apart before going as the seals will melt in the oven. Once there back I will get new seals kits for all the calipers. Fit the groved max brembo front disks along with new ferrodo ds front pads, put uprated break fluid in and bleed the system. Finally refit the wheels, there is alot of work to do in a short space of time so im trying to my hardest to get all the jobs done.

No lol, must of been someone who worked on it previously. Who ever it was, was more than likely embarrassed to ask for it back once they realised where they had left it.

Slow progress update...

If you follow this thread you will know my car is currently on axle stands while I had my f1ns refurbed at a professional powdercoaters called aero coat. I have now recieved the wheels back and they look fantastic. I took my old 195/50/15 P6000's tyres off and stuck on four new Toyo T1R 195/45/15 tyres on. Heres how they now look.

photo59.jpg

While the wheels were off I cleaned and scrubbed all the arches as you can see in the pictures above. I had a set of Brembo Max Grooved Discs ready to go on the fronts that I bought second hand from a guy on here. However my mechanic informed me they were cracking and were forming a lip. He told me if I fitted new pads with these discs it would wreck them, I was pretty gutted by this point. My mechanic pointed out my pads on the rear were 70% worn too so I thought a new break set up was required. I knew deep down my breaking power was getting weaker all the time so I bit the bullet and called K-tec. After looking at the options I decided on Ferrodo 2500 pads at the front and rear, Max brembo grooved discs at the front, I then bought genuine renault discs with bearings and abs ring for the rear but k-tec are going to groove them for me so it will all match, well thats the idea behind it. A good bit of money spent there on my new break set up. I am currently waiting on this to arrive.

After speaking to BigAsh on here with the TDF super clio I decided to go with Motul high performance break fluid, again not cheap but you pay for what you get.

photo58.jpg

I decided to strip all the break calipers off the car to get them repainted and powdercoated. I had the opportunity so I thought why not.

photo60.jpg

I then bought Foliatec black caliper paint and wire brushed all the rust off and then hand painted the calipers.

photo49.jpg

photo54.jpg

This is a very time consuming job by the way.

What it will look like

photo53.jpg

I then wire brushed the front hubs and re painted them black too.

The easy job... I bought some 8.5mm Magnecor ignition leads to match my Red ITB set up

photo52.jpg

The rest of the breaks are still currrently at the powdercoaters, I did want to send the whole lot to them but they said some parts they cant put in the oven because the internals of the caliper will explode. I looked at stripping them down and getting new seal kits but they were almost £20-30 a caliper so it was too expensive. Once I get the break set up from k-tec and the callipers back I can put it all back together and start driving it lol.

yes thats correct, i am going to have them shot blasterd, they will hopefully come up like new with a bit of luck.

The money is adding up on this little beast, i am trying to get it finished for the CSS meet in August

Once i get some money saved up again it will be spent on the bodywork garage fitting my aero catches as they rekon they can save my existing bonnet and remove the pins.

Yes my mate said the same thing lol, I did look at doing it before but bottled it. Is it easy to remove with everything in as it stands ?

Yeah just some brute force lol, although if you want it to come away easy undo coolant header tank and lift off PAS header tank and it just lifts out.

I will look at it at the weekend, I will try to remove it with everything connected I think and if that doesn't work then I will probably have to do what you said. It does make the engine look scruffy

Just had these turn up

Brembo Max Grooved Front Discs
Ferodo DS2500 Front Brake Pads
Genuine Rear Discs Grooved by K-tec
Ferodo DS2500 Rear Brake Pads

Just waiting on the rest of my brake components to come back from the powder coaters, they have kept me waiting for 3 weeks now and still have not started the work, they are now doing the work for free to make up for this.

Good to see a Phase 1 being properly taken care of!

Three weeks is an utter piss take - i'd have been in after a week and raised hell!

  ITB 428 Ph1
Yes it is ridiculous, however I didn't mind waiting a little while as I knew the breaks were going to be a while as k tec had to get the rear discs grooved, but now I'm waiting on them, I was expecting a discount but there doing them for free so I was more than happy, let's just hope I get them back in the next few days lol

Good News...

I finally got all the parts for my brakes back from the powder coaters and they look better than new. The only downside was is that they had painted areas i asked them not too and the rear callipers where covered in a sticky residue from the masking tape when they were bead blasterd. After a good scrub with some warm water and degreaser it soon came off. I dropped the brake components off to the powder coaters in labelled bags so I knew exactly what corner of the car they came from. The powder coaters decided to make my life that bit more harder and give them to me all in one bag. My mechanic arrived this morning and we began installing my new big brake upgrade.

As the powder coaters painted the areas of the callipers that brake pads use to move, the new pads would not fit in, I had to file off the paint back to bare metal to allow the pads to move once more in these areas. Despite filing off the paint on the front callipers, the pads would still not fit in nicely. I then had to file a little off the slider to get a snug fit that woud allow the pads to move when I brake. I copper slipped a few areas to ensure the moving parts stay moving for years to come.

After the installation was complete, we then bagan to bleed the system. We bled each corner twice to ensure we got all the air out of the system and a firm pedal. I had previoulsy drained down the entire brake system using the brake pedal to force it out and to my surprise I only used under a 1 litre of my new brake fluid to bleed the system and top it back up to maximum. After a check for leaks and checked the hand brake and brakes were clapping on, I then finally got my refubed F1ns on with the T1R's.

As the car had been on axle stands for just over 3 weeks, I was wondering wether or not the ole girl would kick into life. To my surprise she fired up after the first turn on the key.

I took the car for a drive to see if the brakes were all okay, and everything seems okay but the brake pedal did not seem as firm as I previously remember. It might just be me as I havent drove it for so long or the fact everytings new. My mechanic told me to take it easy for a bit to allow the brakes to bed in. If the pedal doesnt feel a bit more responsive in a month or so I will have a look at bleeding it again, however we thoroughly bled and rebled the system so it would surprise me.

Next up is to get the roof resprayed by the bodyshop who done it previously as there is some kind of reaction taking place underneath the paint.

I then would like to get the aero catches fitted by the other bodyshop who said they can rescue my bonnet and remove the pins I currently have, I would like to make it to CSS but it might not be ready...fingers crossed

The DS2509 come with bedding in instructions.

10 or so hard brakes from 100 down to 30. Do not lock them up or come to a standstill.

Looks great. Although my only bugbear is that the front discs don't match the rears. Though my fronts are grooved but my rears are standard. :quiet:

  ITB 428 Ph1
Lol yes I do agree, they are genuine rears but I had them grooved by ktec as the front are although the pattern is not the same.

  ITB 428 Ph1
Thank you for the kind comment, I have spent a small fortune on the ole girl but I think it's worth it as you don't see many of these phase 1ns my way these days

  soon to be 182 ;)
have just read through your whole thread, what an amazing build, i used to have a ph1 1.4s and am now looking at getting a Ph2 172 unless a nice Ph1 comes up. have you done any ea meets? would love to see this in the flesh :)

  ITB 428 Ph1
Cheers buddy, no I haven't at the moment just the odd cruise upto Yarmouth lol, I am planning on going to CSS if I can get it off from work. Are there many meets in Norwich ?

  Trafic 140dci
Very rarely ever do any meets in Norwich, Norwich isn't a very 'Car Scene' friendly place in all honesty, without loitering in a supermarket car park, there isn't anywhere to go. I'm the most active member from Norwich, and very rarely ever have anyone come to a meet from Norwich :(

Eye airfield meets are awesome though, we all have a really good laugh :)

Back on subject, brake overhaul looks awesome. Personally i wouldn't of got the grooved disks, they eat pads much quicker, Brembo High Carbon disks about £40 FTW :) i'm only using grooved disks as they came on the car

Next time there's something relatively close I will pop along, are you going to CSS Lewis ? How's the 182 coming along ?

UPDATE....

I have just been promoted at work to Technical Support for the South East of England. As part of my new job, I will be given a company car of my choice. Therefore I can not justify keeping my little Clio and having 3 cars at home including my partners. I have decided to sell the Clio and give someone the chance to own a magnificent example of the phase 1. I am putting the car up for £6000, I think it will be hard to find a car on 46k in this condition with this spec of 216.7bhp for this price. Please contact me if your interested. I am in no rush to sell and if I can't get the price I want, I will simply keep it stored up.

  172 ph1
this is epic mate it looks great and bet it goes the same! how much did the boddies set you back?

  ITB 428 Ph1
The bodies were 3k all in, I only had them installed a few months back, I have just fitted a big brake upgrade too that is barely worn in. The camshafts were 1.5k all in at the end of last year. All the work was carried out by Matt and the TDF team. It does pull like a train but it has never seen a track or been driven recklessly.

  172 ph1
they really arent cheap to tune are they :( what are ph1's like with just the cams done? as im thinking of just going down that route

  ITB 428 Ph1
I had 428 catcams and a map with a few other bits and it made a big difference, I think it was around 192 bhp, but I had possibly the best mapper in the country working on it (Matt TDF)
