Depends which one you like, how much money you have and what you plan to use it for.

  172 Cup
If you can afford it its dotta be trophy or mk2 Vee, but for cheap thrills a ph1 172 or ph2 172 (cup or normal, both are great to drive)

How long is a piece of string....! Most people will be biased towards the model they have (what you really want is a Mini Cooper S hint hint!).

I used to own a Clio 182 with cup packs and thought it was great....a mate had a 172 cup and he preferred that, but we never agreed on it.

Depends what your budget is, and whether you care how nice the interior is?

172 cup has no aircon/abs/leather seats/xenon headlights/cruise control etc, but is marginally lighter, and marginally quicker then normal 172/182, but there really is very little in it.

If your budget runs to it then the Trophy (variant of 182) is a good bet - they only come in red, but have awesome front seats and Sachs suspension that is very trick.

If you've got stacks of cash and can afford the insurance then a V6 clio maybe an option.

The best is the Trophy, as voted by ClioSport users (;))

Lets ask some more basic questions first, how much do you have to spend? How many miles are you doing? Is it going to be used on track days?

There is significant cost variance between the 172 Cup and a 197 and the running costs are far more on the 197 as well, namely the fuel.

For the record the 197 is even stevens with a 172, and a 172 is arguably even stevens with a cup. The differences come with the handling, the 197 is awesome and much better than my 172 is. I cant comment on trophy or cup though.

172ph2 would be my choice rather than a 182. Yes the 182 handles slightly better as standard, but most cars you look at will of done 40k+ miles, so the dampers could be refreshed.Spend the money saved buying a 172 on better suspension.

And bar RB, the 172 comes in nicer colours imo. And the exhaust is cheaper when (not if!) it falls off.

Not in my experience it's not. I borrowed an R27 for a weekend and Andy was in my car which was briefly back to standard and the 172 pulled constantly in all gears. Handling was another story though, miles better chassis and handling is simply on another level to a standard 1*2.

Then again, it all depends on the example of each car. The R27 was on about 10-15k, mine about 80-90k... almost run in :p

I would agree on the colours (Monaco, Flamer) but it depends on whether he will mod it. If it is being kept as standard, I would go for lower miles, this less likely to go wrong (har har famous last words).

depends on budget really, they're all good drivers cars compared to a lot of the sh1t on the roads, but there's a lot better out there also... seating position in 172 / 182 is dire but you get used to it.

Then you call a Chiropractor.
FFS it really isn't that bad lol. 20mins with a spanner, washers removed, makes a big difference.

Mileage doesn't mean that much. I've seen a sub 25kmiler that I wouldn't touch, then cars on 80k that are spot on mechanically. Take someone with you that knows about them, and check it over well.

In my opinion, for cheap thrils, 182 (with both cup packs). You get the speed and looks, but with the luxuries of half leather seats, cruise control, climate control etc etc.

I personally couldnt live with the "cup" seats - gash.

My opinion though, others will disagree..
