Oh dear have I bought a pup 182?

  Clio 182
Bonjour all.
I thought I haf a good buy. Clean looking silver 54 plate with 66k on clock. Cam belt done at 44k.
The car hesitates once it comes on cam at 5k and baxks off. Iv just found a load of oil under the inlet plenum on top of the inlets.
The car is not blowing any smoke and does drive nice until I floor it. Getting a bit pissed of with it now and its only been 2 days!

No, not a pup. The oil under the plenum could be where someone has just missed the filler! glug glug glug as the oil goes. Otherwise it can be a little be of oil seeping around the bolts in that area. Nothing to worry about though :) take off the plenum, clean it up and see if it comes back.

Definitely shouldn't back off at 5k! People will ask where the belts were done I'm sure.

Do you have access to a fault code reader?

  Clio 182
I dont have a code reader at all. No fault lights at all.
I was thinking maybe change the fuel filter but it backs off every time about 5200rpm and continues to feel like its being held back. Puzzled.

100% not the fuel filter

could be the dephaser solenoid. Sounds like the timing might be a small amount out.

When did it last have a service? My car had a low down hesitation/misfire and then once over the 5k mark a bigger misfire that held it back! Turned out the spark plugs were that old the gaps where huge! Could be worth a look? Just make sure if you do change them to get the NGK plugs as they are the only ones recommended

Ill check the plugs when I clean the oil up on the plenum.
Do we have a 182 specialist near me Kings Lynn, Norfolk?

  Clio 182
Plugs look a little lean. Does have some wear on lower electrode so ill replace them with what ever the book says. Has a cool 10 heat rating on the current plugs. What plugs do you lot run?

Consensus is genuine OEM plugs only. Loads of threads about non-OEM plugs causing all sorts of misfire, idle, power issues etc.

NGK-PFR6e-10

Actually very reasonably priced.

Adam @ Wolverhampton (cheap as chips as he works at the main Renault UK parts distribution warehouse thing so some bits are literally straight off the boat from France with no dealer/retailor/etc. mark up) http://www.cliosport.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?197-Renault-Wolverhampton-Parts
Alternatively G172 can get within a few £/price match on anything brembo (i.e. OEM brakes) & plugs http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?679652-172-182-NGK-SPARK-PLUGS-PFR6E-10-*New-in*

Ah bum iv just put the BOCH equivalent of the NGK in as they only had 3 of the NGK. Iv also cleaned the throttle body as it was crapped up.
Car does tick over smoothly now with a nice hum.
Just took it down the road and gave it a kick in. Hesitation still just after 5k but not as bad. Does rev better after 5200 tho but its still not right.

Assuming spark plugs are ok then it sounds like an underlying problem.

Don't know your part of the country so don't know where people go. Mick @ Diamond Motors in Nottingham? Dan @ 519 Automotive in Bedford? Sounds like a trek.

LOL. Bosch Super 4 by any chance?

Who knows. Maybe it was a dodgy batch etc. Maybe the same amount of OEM NGK plugs have let go but no-ones complained.

Not sure now iv chucked the boxes for them. They do have a fine electrode tip tho.
Iv been searching on here and someone had a similar issue it turned out to be HT Leads so I'm picking some up at 3pm before work and will try them 1st.
Cant be much wrong with the car it does drive really well compared to all the others iv test driven before I bought this one.
On a plus note iv polished the headlights so no more yellow mist ;)

hi dude. just a thought.... i had an oil leak that went everywhere from the two round cam seals on the top pass side of the engine next to the inlet. when they had been out (presumably to lock the cams to change the belt) new ones werent fitted and oil was leaking out from the screwdriver marks that were dug into them. changed them and brake cleanered everything up, job done. its deceiving but the oil was blowing out of them over the box and all round the back of the plenum (pushed around by moving air in the bay). worth a look anyway

  Clio 182
Iv cleaned the oil and it looks to be coming from the cam cover. Its not bad at all as said before looks as tho they missed the oil filler and splurge all over the head. Luckly not in the plug tunnels tho.

  Clio 182
Hmmmm iv changed the plugs and HT leads and the hesitation is still the same.
Does the 182 have the power restriction like the 197 when its not up to temperature?

  106GTI / NovaC20LET
I'd try lambda sensors next, especially since its free. Just swap the front one with the rear. The rear one has no role in engine management it only senses if the cat is operating correctly.

  Clio 182
It does not miss fire at all so doubt the coil pack.
It happens at the same rpm all the time in all gears. Also some times the rev limit kicks in at 6700rpm when its just warmed up??? Very odd.
If I unplug the lambada sensor and drive it will it go into fault?

lower limit is when the car is still warming up. Will increase when warm enough to be ragged.

If you unplug lambda it will run on standard values in the ecu so you can give it a go. Will also do this with the sensors on the inlet so you can test if they are okay too.

Yeah the car will run with, lambda, map and a couple of other sensors unplugged.

Uses safe preset values when no live data available.

Take your coil pack off and check the bottom. I had rust between the base of the coil pack and the inlet. Cleaned up and a non rusty second hand one fitted as mine was quite bad. Soooooo much better! My idle was shot to pieces, had a sluggish mid range and a misfire around 5k that the car would drive through. More prominent in the lower gears. These engines need a top quality spark more so than anything else I've worked on so far.

  Clio 182
The hesitance at 5k is probably due to the change in back pressure from your exhaust ;)

Haha noooooo. Should get the coil pack through post tomorrow I do hope that cures is. Its a nice little daily just this annoying hesitation. Fingers crossed.

  Clio 182
Right iv now fitted the new coil pack and its not as bad. It still has a slight hesitation around 5250rpm but does not have the pronounced kick at 5k.
Getting pissed off with it now. Its had plugs leads and coil pack. Iv driven with map and iat sensors unplugged and it still hesitant. I can only see one lambada sensor on cat so where is the 1st one I cant see it from under the bonnet.

  Clio 182
Yeh temp is fine. It revs full range once warm.
Iv also unplugged the cam solenoid for the vvt and it has no change to hesitation.
The only thing iv not done is the lambada sensor swap. I can see one near the cat but where is the other?
