Oil for a brand new car with 20k serv interval??

My car's spanking brand new, and runs on 10/40 oil. The manual states that I can run 5/40 oil if necessary (ie colder conditions).

I've come up to 600 miles, and I want to give it a 1st oil change for good measure but I'm not sure about it because the 1st service isn't due until 20,000 miles:

Is there a special type of oil that allows this 20k interval, or is it just characteristic of the engine I'm running.

Would my fully synth Elf 5/40 oil be good enough to last the 20k service intervals?

Usualy yep it has good quality long life oil but the proper long life oil like Audi use in the RS4 etc use is very expensive.

I wouldn't recomend leaving the oil in that long though 6k or so and for a new char chnage it in the first thousand miles or so.

I wouldnt bother changing it after 600 miles, i would probably wait until at leats 5k to change it. I would definately use the oil they state but try and buy the best one you can find, majority of the time with oil the more expensive the better it is.

Because its a new engine mate and wont get that dirty, thats why you dont need to worry about it.

Off topic I know but last time I pulled my sump plug, I knocked the bottle underneath over and I had to use both hands to keep it upright for what seemed like a decade as the scolding oil (had just got back from a 100mph run from halfords) went all over my hands giving me some rather nasty burns !!!

Lesson if it happened again? Perhaps just say f**k it and go get some sand ready...

Thing is, they spec 10/40 and that's about it.

The manual also states 20k service interval unless it's used in extreme conditions (vv hot weather, or stop/start city traffic).

There's mention of a brand, but I guess that's a marketing ploy?

I did my GF's car the other day, and the thickest tar/sludge came out of her engine... I couldn't believe it! I wonder if her garage were actually servicing it!

Anyway, that was quite warm too (but a hot engine is the best way of getting oil out IMO). I always get hot oil on my hands when I first remove the plug).

Because its a new engine mate and wont get that dirty, thats why you dont need to worry about it.

What about random bits of metal/grit from the factory? Or perhaps, foil wrappers from the crack addicts at the factory? :quiet:

Majority of new engines are more refined now and run in slightly before they are rolled of the end of the production line. Ive done 4500 in my 197 now and the oil is still very clear. Will get changed at 5000 but still wont really need doing.

Look for a high quality extended life oil fully/syn, your oil will stay colourless for a while yet mate, if it makes you feel better change it at 10k intermediates, I have always used ZX1 ultralube in my oil on all vechicles ive had since 98, before that i used to run Slick 50 fully syn treatment but that was apain in the arse as theres so much volume, ZX1 is only 250ml, dont put this into your new engine though the engine needs to bed in before.

The brand is probaly just one of them which is to the spec required for the car. Alfas I think are like this they recomend a certain oil and its the only one you can use as its made to there standard any other oil is rubish for the engine. I cannot imagine the car being like that try the delaership ask what they pour in/spec for the oil required.

Uing 5-40 would be fine no problem its thinner when cold vs 10-40 but nothing amazing.

If the oils clean leave it a bit then.

My old Alfa GTV 3.0 was supposed to run on Selenia oil but that was a market ploy, all GTV owners and specialist garages use high end mobil, castrol etc. The alfa dealership in swansea use Magnatec semi syn ffs and they reckon as it was 10/40 it was ok.
