Oulton Park Trackday Videos (non-Clio, Westfield)

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Hello people,

Went to Oulton yesterday and had a cracking day! Done a lot of suspension / handling work on the car over winter and it's really paid off. Felt like a dog before but now it's a pleasure to pedal
driving.gif

Couple of vids...

Single lap (works out about 1:55.5 from Dentons to Dentons, was held up by the Civic at Old Hall):

Few laps with the instructor, making our way through traffic:

Was watching this by the pits when you were doing a few laps. Could hear it coming a long time before i saw it! Sounds like a proper monster

Awesome bit of pedalling there! Actually look a lot more comfortable without the instructor, his hand gestures would annoy me after a while! lol

Thanks man. Haha, yeah it was a bit off-putting at points. Useful though, as always :)

Haha, you know I was thinking the same! Yeah man, sure, I'll probably post on the Nutz list when I get the next one booked.

It is a bit loud yeah... Made 100 at noise testing but they thought it was a 'normal' C20XE so only asked me to hold it at 5k. Was half expecting to get pulled on drive by but the induction is kept down by the airbox.

awesome, very quick!

Cheers dude!

Haha, well I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't remember anything coming past but there was some quick stuff there, few other Westies on slicks, Ginettas...

Love you too! Yeah I love it now, I was a bit 'iffy' when I first got it cos it hadn't been screwed together all that well and the handling was scary.

Spec-wise, this is pretty long, sorry...

Yeah she's not too slow :)

Are you still hobbling about with your foot in a cast? Reason I ask is that I'm possibly heading to Blyton on 17th March if you fancy coming?

Adam do you know pete who was there with the Civic Racecar ?

and your springs are way too soft at the back , especially on a 95 chassis as they were bloody good ;) around that age ...(till about 98)

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
I don't 'know' him unfortunately, but know of him through the Westy forum if you see what I mean. The car looked awesome! Why do you ask?

Hmmm. The car feels good to me (although I guess I am inexperienced compared with someone like yourself!) and the calculations I carried out (and specialists I spoke to) reckon they are pretty close to optimal. Those springs give a wheel rate of 1.7hz at the rear with 1.88hz up front. What would your suggestion be? I have some 225s for the rear as well, which I have tried, but only at a very slippery and damp Silverstone.

Do you have antiroll bars ? .... the sprint boys run soft setups as they want to work tyres from the off ....

I built and setup the car he then bought his dads car also runs the same setup but we ran 450 front 280 rear .... both myself and dave higgs (who was racecar dr ) tested and found that worked really well .... jeff cooper and the north eastern boys now swear by it .... it will sound a step too far but works brilliantly ....

Harvsport.com has the full spec on it ... your rear rideheight looks low in your avatar too

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Yeah got bars front and rear, set to pretty much full soft, not sure of exact rates but they come well recommended. They are about 3/4" diameter and 1/8" wall both ends.

Ah really? Thought the sprint cars were running really hard setups to get heat into the tyres more quickly, their spring rates are higher than mine in general.

Thanks for the spring rate suggestions, interesting! Is that with or without arbs?

The avatar pic is old, but ride heights (car fully loaded) are fairly high, 110 front and 130 rear measured to the normal chassis rails.

I'll have a look at your site, cheers!

110/130 is low i would go an inch higher front and rear ......playskool bars are fine your spec looks good .....mine and racecar dr's cars are the 2 in nearly all the fluke pictures and on the Caged website as i developed the cage with Phil at caged

An inch? Wow, I didn't expect that. Will try and find myself some longer springs to try then.

Your car(s) must be super stiff with those springs, that ride height and Westfield ARBs? I don't think I'm good enough to cope with that, haha.

I remember the car actually, so pimp with all the carbon bits and the paint job.

Its not as stiff as you might think .... I ran 8" rears 6 fronts (rims) as well but it was easier to drive stiffer ..... and yes it did look smart painted .... the carbon was fitted and it was sprayed by what used to be the tyrell f1 paintshop and bits of that car have been worked on at Mclaren ..... fortunatley local mates :)

I was recently asked to price up building another .... I got to 40k very quickly ...there is what would now cost 8k's worth of carbon in it ... the seats alone now are 2k

ill be in cast until the 20th :( i blame my riding making my ankle and the rest of my body so fragile.

Cool - well I'll try and get hold of some new springs and see what happens, thanks!

That's a lot of carbon!!

Bummer, never mind. Next time!

and you can't buy carbon rear arches any more for love nor money ,

apart from the main tub and bonnet everything was carbon , the tub and bonet were made from westfields race bodywork which is ultra thin and then had strengthening pieces bonded in carbon.

there wasn't a single ali sheet in the car we did everything in carbon .

420bhp/ton

i could have done more carbon if i had changed the headlamp shells and they now make rear lights in carbon .....

the whole car was down to a smidge over 500kgs with a cage on .

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
You could make them though :)

I guess there is a point where it doesn't save any weight, but it's still cool. 500kg with a full cage is bloody good.

Mate of mine has an S2000-powered Westy with all carbon goodies including the shift paddles and bellhousing, seriously nice bit of kit! Think that's about 470kg (normal roll over bar with a petty strut) so it goes pretty well.

biggest issue with the S2000 lump is the gearbox ratios arn't great ...... bellhousing and type 9 or sequential and your away .

there is a mould for the rear arches but westfield got lawyers involved to stop them being made and succeeded as the rear arches are not generic like front wings for example , twas the only thing they stopped production of from a 3rd party .

making those rear arches yourself is a b**ch and don't forget they are not a mirror of each other either as a westfield is different on the left side to the right .

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Yeah he isn't using the standard gearbox. Great engine for this sort of car though.

Weird about the rear arches, but makes sense. Not hard to make your own tooling if you really really wanted some I guess.

There does seem to be a lot of people willing to put a lot of money into cars! Nowt wrong with a manual box though, especially when you are driving for fun rather than competition.

Ours is probably at £40-50k now, not including the tow car/truck, trailer, tools and spares lol.

i counted my reciepts after 10 years ........

it was not a small number :)

then again its been to most of the old and new GP circuits in europe and every track in the uk , so i am not surprised .... it did a huge amount of track work and never missed a beat .

Sadly I fix rather than drive, but compared to the funness of the Cobra replica and the downright brutal speed of the single seater it's a nice balance.
steval20015.jpg

Oooh pauls car .... before that owned by john arnolds brother steve ..... that was one of the cars in the original batch of cages we had made

Its a caged cage with full msa cert ... circa 2006 ... should have a silver homologation sticker on somewhere

Ah, that's a shame (sort of - I get a lot of pleasure from spannering too so know how it can still be enjoyable)!

Harv, got any vids of your Westfield(s)?

I'll just sneek this one in. Looks slow compared to yours.
