Painting wheels... Work in progress

Jamie

Considering refurbing a set of wheels and have read several guides but I am unsure if I am wasting time and money by not using a paint gun and compressor...

Pictures of results would be fab.

(PS Hi Nath ;))

Re: Painting wheels...

I got mine done for £200 all in. Done in gloss black and its a proper job as they were baked in the oven.. If doing them myself I would us a gun as cans as shite IMO

Re: Painting wheels...

Ive just done a set with rattle cans and it honestly isnt worth the effort mate!
I left the wheels for several days then triend using some cutting compound to get rid of the orange peel and in certain areas the paint came off right back to the metal.
The preparation alone will take you ages if the wheels are kerbed and you want them to look good!

Re: Painting wheels...

I've done a couple of sets with rattle cans... They have come out pretty nice, you can tell the difference if you put one next to a professional finish, but when they are on the car you can't really tell the difference. It does require patience and LOTS of coats of paint & laquer.

I did get new centre caps & tyres which greatly help the appearance, but hopefully these give the idea.

There a good guide on here that you can follow.

Another 2 tips - I've always found that you only need a very, VERY light abrasive the paint coat is much thinner than you get from a compressor and you'll easily rub through it unless you take care.

And the final tip, you'll hear it a thousand times - preparation is everything!

Re: Painting wheels...

yup i used jungle jims guide and it worked great. i done mines in the summer and if it wasnt for curbing my wheels they would still be in mint condition. rattle cans are suffice for the job

Re: Painting wheels...

Few more questions.

I have some turinis in powder coated black. Of which one has curbing the other is in VGC.

However I want to paint them another colour and wanted to know is it just sand and fill the kerbing and paint ontop of the powder coated finish or should I look for someone who will sand blast them then prime and paint.

i think they will need to be sanded back as i dont think the paint will stick to it mate

Re: Painting wheels...

i have done a few sets of wheels with can's and to be honest you can get the same finish if you take your time and go to a proper paint place and not halfords as the tip they use is a fan and not direct spray like the halfords crap.

but if they need work to repair them mate just pay the cash and get them done

Re: Painting wheels...

Wasne a brilliant job TBH would be alot better if I did it now, Much easier to take the tyres off too!

Re: Painting wheels...

i had to to the edge all the way round mate on 3 wheels, the guy who had the car before he crashed it was a estate agent so he had hit every kurb in london.

i painted my front bumper and wing with spray cans as well and unless i told you you would never no the finish is better than the O/E, its all down to the prep if the prep its crap then with the best oven in the world the finish will be crap.

Re: Painting wheels...

Start with a proper good wash getting all the dust and crap off, i buy 3 different grades of sand paper so i can get out and scratches or light kerb marks then wet and dry the whole wheel to make sure there is no shine, ground in brake dust or scratches anywhere on the old paint, then just panel wipe the whole wheel again and again then prime.

What grades did you use ?

And what primer did you use ?

And did you sand between coats ?

Re: Painting wheels...

Im using rough P80 I think then P240 to smooth.

Anything less than that and it felt like paper.

Must be nearly 100 quids worth :S

And i bet your arms were aching :(

How long did you leave between coats ?

Sory for all questions i'm trying to weigh up refurbing mine myseld or getting it done by someone.

Re: Painting wheels...

There are some cheap places floating around Dicky - no doubt you could get a compeitive quote compared to your materials.

I have done my bullets and I reckon around one can of primer, paint and lacquer per wheel would be ok but thats £15 per wheel plus £5 on sanding stuff (Total I have budgeted for or estimated is £80) and would save alot of time.

The only reason I am doing it myself is I actually want to.
