Re: Painting wheels...

f**king hell how much did all the paint and lacquer etc sting you ?

Must be nearly 100 quids worth :S

And i bet your arms were aching :(

How long did you leave between coats ?

Sory for all questions i'm trying to weigh up refurbing mine myseld or getting it done by someone.

you dont need nearly as much as that, i did a set of kei 17 inch multispoke wheels with 3-4 small cans of paint 2 large cans of primer and 2 large cans of laquer

see the how to guide mate, i have written everything there and put pics

Re: Painting wheels...

So as you can see above, the first is one of them rubbed down, unfortunatley didnt take any before pics.

Pic 2 is wheel 2 sprayed with two coats of primer then sanded down again ready for final coat of primer.

Up close are the kerbings Tim was happy to let me have a go at fixing. I filled with one coat of filler (in pic 1) and sanded and sprayed and have since primering noticed greater blemishes and filled again.

Re: Painting wheels...

Im using rough P80 I think then P240 to smooth.

Anything less than that and it felt like paper.

p80 on ally wheels? woahhhhh lol

no reason at all to drop below P320 unless youre sanding down filler, even then i wouldnt use a new P80 on wheels

p80 is way too coarse, you dont sand down anything with p80, p80 is purely for rubbing down compounds like bodyfiller/fibreglass. if you wanna get out scratches use P180, especially on ally wheels as they will just take huge chunks out of it. if you go over alloys with 80 and dont get them all out properly working down the grades, you'll primer them, paint them laquer them and in a few days/weeks, itll all sink and you'll have an alloy full of deep scratches; especially using aerosols, they simply dont have the covering potential

id reccommend P80 for any metal filler, P120/P180 if its only a bit. also P80 for kerbing

P180 for any scratches/slight kerbing

P320dry or p800/p1000/p1200 wetordry for general prepping of the paint ready for primer

Nice one. So I have already prepped the two above using P120 - so what should I do now? Rub it down using a higher grade?

Also if I had them prof done in future would the potential scratch marks show through that?

nah theyde sand them all down properly again n use high build 2k primer

yea work your way down the grades, never jump more than 2 grades, like you cant sand out P80 scratches with P400, needs to go P80/P180/P320.

so sand them with P180/P240 then give them a wetflat and theyll be good for primer

As you can see above one is already primered? What do I do about that then?

wouldnt put LOADS of layers on as suggested, as they will chip easier, look a right state after 6 months

Right, my other 2 turinis which I have picked up are pretty f**ked. Loads of bubbling paint and alot where the paint has chipped off. What do I do now? Will I have to get them dipped/shot blasted as there is no way I can paint on whats there now or just pay to get them refurbed?
