Possible Noobie iPod Question

  172 cup TT
Hi chaps..

Got bought a 30gig iPod Vid for bday but in a bit of a pickle about something. Can people suggest whats best to do in the follow situation, ta:

ON my PC I have only a handful of albums.. the rest are all individual tunes downloaded over the years, roughly 800 ranging from Old rave / Drum and bass tracks to new pop / garage / classical / indie / rock etc...

What im worried about is after plugging my ipod in that itunes will put ALL those 800 random individual tunes into ONE "Album / Artist" etc.. So when i look on my ipod ill have 1 HUUUGE album on there which will be silly...

Is there any way i could go through "My music" folder on my pc and organise everything into a number of separate folders i.e:Various garage, various Rock, various Drum and Bass etc.. then the ipod would pick these up as albums??? see what i mean??..

Any one have any ideas etc then cool.. thanks loads..

Cheers
Floodie

Create a playlist in iTunes..

Edit, Preferences -> iPod

Only sync that playlist (and others if you have them) and not the library.

Then all your singles will be contained within that playlist.

Also create a playlist for the albums you want syncing - which probably is all of them with a 30GB iPod.. but.. :)

iPod will also show you just albums - so if you remove the id3 tag for album (album field in iTunes) in all the singles, then go to Albums on the iPod, they won't show up.

It won't put the singles into one Album / Artist though - it'll use the id3 tags from the file, so as long as these are correct, then they'll show up correct.

ah great thanks mate.. i THINK i see what you are getting at..

is there no way though of getting all my, say, drum and base into an "album" on the ipod called "Various Drum and Bass" etc? or does that HAVE to be in a playlist called "Various drum and bass"

See what i mean??

Ah
If you can select all the drum and bass tracks in iTunes.. right click - Get Info.. (Ok to edit multiple items).

Type in the album as you want.. then save.. then they will all be in the album you typed.

Have you got USB2? If not then it can cause problems for the ipod when trying to charge.

Hmm?
Heh.

Floodie's trying to organise his music - not a charging/transfer problem! :rasp:

One more thing i forgot Daz - I assume its best to go through my music library in iTunes FIRST and change all the Album Tags THEN connect the ipod for the first time so it all Sync's fine yeh?

Yea, but you'll probably find it just updates automatically anyway when you dock it. :approve:

Enjoy all that music! :D

If he was 'leet' he would know you can just select

Music > Genre > Drum and Bass

or any other genre you feel like listening too without having to add them all to a fake 'album'

so ner :rasp:

ooh interesting idea!! arghhh so many different ways to organise it all!! hmm.. which would be best..,. hmm.. problem with the Genre thing tho is wouldnt ALL my DnB tracks be in one place? so if i had 100 of them id need to scroll down them all?? OR can you have folders WITHIN the genre menu?.. If i did it the other way and called each fake album "Various DnB 1", "Various DnB 2" etc... would that be better?.. or maybe not... oh b****cks to it :)

Pah!
Thats if all Genre's are filled in.

My excuse is this - I don't have genre's.. I don't like them.. Music is music.

So NER BACK! :rasp:

Haha :)

ok, need your help again chaps..... this is the situation.. i have got rid of the 30 gig and now have a friends 60gig with 8000odd songs.. BUT... when i plug it into my PC it says that my pc isnt the right pc for THIS Ipod or something.. and the "do not disconnect" symbol flashes constantly on the iPod.. it says i have to totally reformat the ipod (yeh right) so it can update itself with my pc or something... Itunes wont recognise it as it is at the moment...
What im planning to do is, use some aftermarket (anapod etc) software which will let me copy ALL the contents to my PC... THEN reformat the ipod back to new THEN sync it all over again.... this seems my only way... this alright to do?

Thats the only way. iTunes won't let you sync an iPod from two different computers/user profiles :(
As soon as you "associate" an iPod to your own iTunes, it'll just put your music on!

If you were running linux you could use gtkpod to copy music too and from the Ipod. GTKpod has no such restrictions on which ipods can connect.

Yea, but then his iPod would be s**t in Linux ;)

We tried. No application works as well with the iPod as iTunes does - FACT.

Banshee came close, but still didn't have the "trouble free" experience you should have.

will you two get a room :)

No but thanks nice one... im going to use Yamipod to do the transfer of tunes from ipod to PC.. seems like a good app... it saves onto the iPod AND your pc hard drive...

have you tried it recently, I have a video ipod and use nothing else to manage my mp3's, playlists and podcasts.. and have been for about 8 months ;)

The only thing is you cant access itunes.. but then no other software can do that either :p

You couldn't sync individual play lists when I tried.. only yer library (from Banshee).

The amount of feature requests for that was insane!

Oh god.. chaps, seems i have another problem!!! doh :)..

ok, i think the ipod was originally "done" using a mac!.. so the File system wouldnt be windows' FAT32..... SOOOOOooo... does that mean even if i used Yamipod then it wouldnt be able to transfer over due to my Pods Hdrive being in the Macs file structure???.. argh... Just to also answer a question i know you'll ask... when i go into my iPods ABOUT menu, right at the bottom it has the Model number and just above it is the S/Number... If it's "made" using Windows doesnt this menu show something else at the bottom saying its "windows".. unsure though..

Thanks again!

Plug it in and see if it works :D Easiest way to find out.. :)

If it's been formatted Mac tho, you might be in trouble.. and you'll need to reformat it using the iPod updater tool (you will, of course, loose everything on it)

Linux can mount mac filesystems no problem...

*runs for cover*

PS. Daz is correct, if it doesnt read it (which I dont think it will) then you would need to reformat it for windows.

KDF said:

It can read/write NTFS too :D

Ask my mate who, in a lecture, borrowed his mates 2GB micro drive and banged a file on it from Ubuntu.. not sure how he kept quiet when it wouldn't mount after in his Windows box :rasp:

But in seriousness, Linux can mount most things.. which is damn useful. ;)

But, alas, I'm tired from 6/7 years of Linux desktop failing.. and use it only on servers now. I have a much more peaceful computer usage.. :star:

  172 cup TT
right... almost coming to an end here... Do you think i could install Xplay or MacDrive on my Windows machine so i can then use an HFS+ Formatted iPod on Windows?? I could download that from www.mediafour.com

You know aswell as I do though that NTFS write support is experimental at best, and users are warned that it would and will very likely over time corrupt NTFS file systems due to M$'s non publishing of their NTFS standards.

The NTFS support linux has is purely from reverse engineering the file system.

I know, but man.. imagine being in a lecture and not being able to shout expletives at losing 2GB of data.

 :)

lol.. stupid person ;)

Sorry to hear you moved away from linux on the desktop, have you tried XGL yet ? puts vista's improvements to shame.
